Margaret Kimberley on Racism, Militarism & Capitalism

April 21, 2023, 4:28 p.m.
Keynote address at the April 1st CAPA STUDENT-LED PEACE SUMMIT 2023: "Fighting the War Machine: in Chicago and Beyond"! Chicago Area Peace Action Student chapters at Loyola University, De Paul University and the University of Illinois - Champaign organized this event to focus attention on the many other wars that the United States is involved in as well as Ukraine which dominates the news. "Although it may have been the most highlighted, [Ukraine] is just one of many ongoing violent catastrophes around the globe. From Palestine to Yemen, from El Salvador to right here in Chicago, the international war machine continues to destroy people’s lives. Whether it is more weapons delivered abroad to "defend freedom" or more cops on the streets for public safety, "Such militarism is often framed as “just” and “necessary,” while communities around the world know it is anything but." For that reason the summit seeks to help organize, empower and educate activists from all backgrounds and experience levels so we can band together and demand global peace!

April 21, 2023, 3:59 a.m.
The American Folklife Preservation Act of 1976 directed the Library of Congress to gather stories and art of everyday people to reflect the identity of America, which is recognized as the core of family and community life. The Story Corps is a current project of the American Folklife justify of the Library of Congress. Two air stream trailers, retrofitted with state of the art recording equipment, will visit towns and cities throughout the United States for about a year beginning in June 2005, to collect recordings of every day people interviewing each other about their lives. Anyone will be welcome to visit the Story Corps trailer that may be near where you live, by signing up on line at www.storycorps.net. Each participant receives a copy of the interview, and may donate a copy to the Library of Congress. This interview with Dr. Peggy Bulger, the Director of the American Folklife justify at the Library of Congress was recorded in her office at the Library of Congress on May 20, 2005. She began by reviewing the history of the American Folklife and the purpose of Story Corps project. Students for Justice in Palestine, its conference, and stopping Cop City

April 21, 2023, 2:36 a.m.
The organizing campaign for Palestinian rights in the US is most aggressively being waged on college campuses. And at the center of that organizing is a rapidly growing organization, Students for Justice in Palestine, SJP. They have been met by aggressive tactics of retaliation from campus Jewish organizations and University administrations being pressed by wealthy alumni donors to silence SJP. SJP recently met at their annual conference to assess its past work and strategize for the future, and our feature presentation this week is a discussion of that conference, sponsored by Mondoweiss News Service, in the following Podcast, which also takes a hard look at Israel’s involvement in the militarization of our police through an enormous police "training" facility being built in Atlanta, Georgia. But first: to add to our voice, the Cambridge Bethlehem People to People Project (cambridgebethlehem.org) will be presenting a new virtual forum series called Voices from Palestine. It will feature voices from the ground in the West Bank and Gaza. On Sunday, April 30, 2023 at 1pm Eastern Time, the hour-long program will launch, featuring Palestinian activists, cultural workers, community organizers, educators, and health workers speaking on the ground from Palestine -- timely interviews with audience participation. Its first program features Khitam Edelbi, an expressive therapist and activist, whom we too have featured in the past.
