BSTF 822 - THE FUTURE WILL SUCK Show

July 18, 2010, 7:45 a.m.
Following yet another failed X-Day, it seems that the promise of The Future grows ever more meager. Once upon a time, The Future promised us flying cars and meals-in-a-pill and vacations in space! Nowadays it feels like The Future doesn't even promise a cure for cancer or the end of starvation. And since it's been yet another let-down on getting off of this rock, let's at least enjoy a chance to gripe about how THE FUTURE WILL SUCK. Enjoy.

Bhutan's GNH..The Better GDP, a Gross National Happiness Index

July 16, 2010, 7:17 p.m.
Considering the rapid demise of all of our 401ks, maybe economists could come up with a better way of measuring how well we’re doing outside of the Gross Domestic Product—that only measures economic activity—which, of late, has not been especially good. In fact, one country has already come up with such an alternate metric. In 1972, the small kingdom of Bhutan, a landlocked nation just South of the Himalaya Mountains , devised a so called Gross National Happiness index.

#124 -- It's Not Character Flaws: It's Policy

July 16, 2010, 1:31 p.m.
When a President's decisions harm average Americans, critics too often attribute the decisions to a character flaw. W. Bush is a "dry drunk" who is competing with Dad. Obama is "too trusting of experts" (says Frank Rich). That's why he's done little about the catastrophe in our Gulf and its perps. Drs. Kenneth Dowst and MICHAEL PARENTI argue, instead, that Presidents institute bad (for most or us) policies in order to serve the ruling elite--not because of "character flaws."
