Intrview: Doreen Silversmith from 6 Nations speaks about the 600 murdered and missing indigenous women whose families still await justice, and a benefit this same evening to raise money for indigenous women affected by those crimes.
Following that interview, we have Elisa Palma in the studio who was one of the many people arbitrarily (and brutally) arrested during the week of protests against the G20, notably BEFORE the Saturday rioting, in fact at the community march on Friday June 25 which OCAP co-organized. Also arrested with Elisa Palma was Emomotimi Azorbo, a deaf man who was simply passing by to go to the subway, and for whom no interpretation was supplied during and before his detention.

commentary on biphobic columnists refused by This Way Out
July 3, 2010, 4:03 p.m.
This commentary was originally recorded for airing on "This Way Out." Greg Gordon refused to air it, claiming he'd have to offer Keith Olbermann, Dan Savage and Michael Musto "equal time" if it ran. (On the very next TWO program after the denial, Gordon aired a segment from Olbermann's MSNBC program featuring Savage.) So much for TWO covering biphobia.

Gasland (documentary on natural gas extraction in U.S.)
July 2, 2010, 10:40 p.m.
(Audio of film)
It is happening all across America-rural landowners wake up one day to find a lucrative offer from an energy company wanting to lease their property. Reason? The company hopes to tap into a reservoir dubbed the "Saudi Arabia of natural gas." Halliburton developed a way to get the gas out of the ground-a hydraulic drilling process called "fracking"-and suddenly America finds itself on the precipice of becoming an energy superpower.

#506 - Wage Slavery & Moral Dumbing Down
July 2, 2010, 5:33 p.m.
John Taylor Gatto has documented how business interests instituted forced schooling to 'dumb down' active citizens into consumers passive enough to work for the man and accept what they were given by corporations. This show looks at the moral component of dumbing down, the undermining of people's innate altruism and moral sense, making them easily manipulable by money.
The first hour starts with a presentation by Alfie Kohn on teaching children to care. He explains how the strict father approach of praising or rewarding kids for being kind to others and punishing them for being selfish undermines children's ability to become nurturers of others, by encouraging them to think only of themselves. It ends with a humorous piece from The Onion about the hypnotic power money has over people.
The second hour starts with a song "Don't Let Money Change You" and some remarks of Noam Chomsky from episode 29 on the "Spirit of the Age" (Selfish love of money) from the 1850's. Next is Daniel Pink's review of research into the relationship between motivation and performance, and a section episode 371's adaption of "The Trap" on New Labour's introduction of target culture into UK. It replays "12 Shovels", from episode 183, Lyn Gerry's parallel of capitalism to the sadistic behaviour of Nazi Concentration camp guards, before concluding with a presentation by Barry Schwartz on Moral Values.
#122 -- The Culture of Celebrity: A Second Look
July 2, 2010, 5:28 p.m.
The commercial media promote "the culture of celebrity." This culture makes people more passive, inclined to to blame only themselves for problems, & less able to organize & fight back. Or so argues journalist-prophet Chris Hedges.
We'll hear more of Hedges' Winnipeg talk, including his report on Michael Jackson's funeral, "a variety show with a coffin." I'll add additional specific examples--headlines from a popular "news and entertainment" Web site--and some commentary.
