June 30, 2010, 6:33 a.m.
This episode: as our feelings of pride and patriotism return on Canada Day, is it a good idea to remember what happened when martial law was declared in Toronto? To wonder who called for it and when it will happen again? Do Canadian men really want to ask women, children and the elderly to fight the people at the top who sent 10,000 cops, troops, mercs and spooks to attack us? Will Canadian men realize that it's harder for most women to fight them so guys should finally just deal with this crap?

Twinkies- deranged killer defenses & time capsules -a short history

June 29, 2010, 7:34 p.m.
The creator of the Twinkie, James A. Dewar died just 25 years ago today. Urban legend has it that Twinkies will stay fresh forever. Or almost. A long shelve life helped to ensure its place in thousands of bomb shelters in the 1960s. And President Bill Clinton famously stuck one in a time capsule. Maybe the only thing more legendary than the Twinkie’s longetivity, is its use as a form of legal defense originally coined after the murder of Gay San Francisco city supervisor, Harvey Milk. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, at the trial of the murderer, Dan White, noted psychiatrist Martin Blinder testified that White had been depressed at the time of the crime, and pointed to several factors indicating White's depression: he had quit his job; he shunned his wife; and although normally clean-cut, he had become slovenly in appearance. Furthermore, White had previously been a fitness fanatic and health food advocate, but had begun consuming junk food like -- you guessed it-- Twinkies and sugar-laden soft drinks like Coca-Cola. Ludicrous as it sounds, the defense actually worked.

82 - Colour Red

June 29, 2010, 7:18 p.m.
“When does red become a colur?” This question is ridiculous as asked. It is clear to us that red is a subset of a colour, and red must have been a colour way before becoming red. And yet we hear “When does a human become sentient?” when somebody attempts to justify abortion. Apart from that stupid argument there is really little rationality behind the pro‐abortion side of the debate.

Labor Express for 6-28-10

June 29, 2010, 12:04 p.m.
This is the full 6-28-10 episode of the Labor Express Radio program. Last week was an important week for the labor movement locally, nationally and internationally. There were a number of major events held and announcements made at all three levels, and we going to try our best to report on these events and developments on today’s program. First off, on the local scene, the Chicago Federation of Labor held a press conference at City Hall Thursday to announce a historic agreement with Walmart over the expansion of new Walmart stores in Chicago. But the big questions for many in Chicago’s labor movement is did the CFL sell out way to cheap? Or was there really no other option because the CFL’s much touted success in getting labor friendly alderman elected a couple of years ago, turned out to be a very ephemeral victory at best. We'll hear the CFL’s official announcement as well as frustration with the announcement from residents of Chicago’s Southside in the first half of the program. On the national level, Detroit hosted the 2nd U.S. Social Forum last week, with significant involvement of organized labor. We will hear an excerpt from a recent episode of KPFK in Los Angeles program Voices From The Frontlines which includes an interview with Ai-Jen Poo of Domestic Workers United. She talked about the Excluded Workers Congress at the USSF. And on the international scene, our neighbors to the north hosted a meeting of the G20 nations in Toronto last week. Thousands of trade unionists, economic justice activist, anti-corporate globalization activists, environmentalist and activist from a multitude of freedom struggles descended on Toronto to protest the G20 meetings. We will hear from Indy media activists that attend these protests and the heavy amount of police repression used against the protestors. Labor Express Radio is Chicago's only English language labor news and current affairs radio program. News for working people, by working people. Labor Express Radio airs every Monday morning at 10:00 AM on Chicago's Sound Alliance, WLUW, 88.7 FM. For more information, see our website at: www.laborexpress.org and our homepage on Archive.org at: http://www.archive.org/details/LaborExpressRadio or page at Radio4All.net… http://www.radio4all.net/index.php/series/Labor+Express+Radio
