Dioxin Exposure and Prostate Cancer

May 24, 2010, 4:36 p.m.
Dr. Robert Moore, Senior Scientist, University of Wisconsin, School of Pharmacy has studied the effects of dioxin exposure on reproductive systems for a large part of his career as an academic researcher. This focus led him to consider the role of dioxin exposure in the development and aging of the prostate. He has discovered that gestational dioxin exposure causes persistent changes in the prostate gland, which are believed to constitute precancerous lesions. In delving into the molecular biology of this phenomenon, he has learned that the aryl hydrocarbon receptor inhibits prostate carcinogenesis. Dr. Moore’s current research seeks an answer to the question of whether or not gestational dioxin exposure predisposes offspring to increased prostate cancer susceptibility.

May 24, 2010, 6:18 a.m.
This episode: Happy May 2-4 Canada! However, would it be even happier if we were more sure about our future? Since we're partying with friends, can we work with them to get active before the G20 Summit to make sure we make enough noise to stop our "world" leaders from treating us like crap when they come to our city? Don't we listen to music all the time that (sort of) tells us to do this anyway? Don't all religions (sort of) say the same thing? This might be a lot easier than we thought... ;-)

Luddites - a short history of the first labor movement

May 23, 2010, 9:48 p.m.
Call someone a luddite today and you’ll likely receive a sour look. The term has evolved into meaning someone who is against modern ways or technology. But the original luddites were far more calculating in their rejection of the industrialization that was destroying their way of life. They emerged in Nottingham, England, curiously, -- the same district famous for another champion of the poor, Robin Hood. The Luddite movement was a reaction by mill workers of the Manchester - Leeds industrial region of England to the coming of steam powered machinery, replacing their skilled labor and leaving them jobless and hungry.

Observing elections in the Philippines

May 23, 2010, 11:08 a.m.
Montreal-based journalist and community organizer Stefan Christoff shares his experiences as an election observer in the Philippines in May of this year. We learn about a full range of irregularities and examples of corruption that occurred on election day, as witnessed by members of the People's International Observer's Mission. Incidents such as election-related killings, bribes taking advantage of working-poor people's desperation, brute military intimidation near and at election precincts, and the dubious introduction of voting machines by foreign multi-national corporation Smartmatic are some of the issues discussed. This piece shows that Philippines elections have been, and continue to be, far from clean, democratic, and peaceful. They're definitely not in the best interest of the working-class people in the Philippines, the majority of whose citizens live below the poverty line. What will help victims of state repression heal and stave off these horrific cyclic realities? Stefan talks about strengthening our critical thinking powers, progressive activism, and working with social movements.
