Haymarket Riot Part 2 - Of anarchist and 40 hour work weeks

Ironically August Spies who was executed for the Haymarket Riot was an advocate of non-violent resistance. He led off the protest at the Haymarket with the following speech: “There seems to prevail in some quarters the idea that this meeting has been called for the purpose of inaugurating a riot. However let me tell you at the beginning that this meeting has not been called for any such purpose.” He then went onto explain that the meeting’s intent was to shed light on the activities and the general situation surrounding the shootings that had occurred earlier that week at the McCormick Reaper Works factory. Shortly after he left, 180 police marched into the square and ordered the meeting to disperse. As the speakers climbed down from the platform, a bomb was thrown at the police, killing one and injuring seventy. Police responded by firing into the crowd, killing one worker and injuring many others.

He then explored the connections between the Bush family and the intelligence community. Baker discovered while writing "Family of Secrets", that George H.W. Bush's connection with the CIA began in 1953, as opposed to Bush's "official" joining of the organization in 1976. He unearthed information alleging that Bush was involved in the JFK assasination and Watergate. Baker emphasized that they were merely part of a larger agenda influenced by powerful elites who have been controlling world events to fit their agenda. Stressing that the Bush family are merely players in this group of power brokers, Baker said, "they're not the guys running the thing." He does not subscribe to a conspiracy theory. He believes that the Bush family works with a collection of like-minded, powerful people working together to enhance their power. "You're talking about a mindset." Ultimately, he expressed concern that this intelligence community, military, corporate and governmental alliance continues to exert its power. He suggests that we are living in a very sensitive and fragile situation that is self perpetuating and on-going. International Expert on Chemical Carcinogenesis Speaks on Dioxin Exposure Cancer Risk in the US

Dr. Vincent Cogliano is one of the world’s top experts on the subject of chemical carcinogenesis. He is employed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) working in the Monographs Division, which produces reviews of the carcinogenicity of chemical substances. Dr. Cogliano states that based upon the quantitative risk characterization set forth in the draft US EPA dioxin reassessment the total cancer burden imposed by dioxin exposure of the US population due to consumption of contaminated animal fat foods is one thousandth of the US population. One thousandth of the US population of 308 million is 308,000, approximately 308,000 American lives lost to cancer during the next 70 years due to dioxin exposure. We discuss the importance of reevaluating dioxin pursuant to lowering the World Health Organization’s Provisional Tolerable Monthly Intake (PTMI) for dioxins due to the magnitude of dioxin exposure cancer risk. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) is charged with developing food safety standards such as the WHO Provisional Tolerable Monthly Intake. JECFA established the WHO PTMI in 2001. Dioxin is not listed for reevaluation on the agenda of the upcoming JECFA meeting which will take place in Geneva, Switzerland in June of 2010. Numerous scientific research articles have been published in the peer reviewed literature since 2001, supporting the conclusion that the existing PTMI is not protective against dioxin exposure cancer risk. In order to limit cancer deaths to the one in a million excess cancer deaths traditionally used as a standard in the United States, the PTMI would have to be reduced by three orders of magnitude. This simply means that as stated above, dioxin exposure cancer risk is approximately one in one thousand for the US population; the PTMI is currently set at the level of exposure which now exists. The PTMI was established for the purpose of creating the illusion that dioxin contamination at current levels was not imposing unacceptable disease outcomes. The science of dioxin exposure cancer risk supports the position that consumption of animal fat imposes far more than an acceptable amount of cancer risk.

Oil Rig Explosion Reveals a World Desperate for Oil

When the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon exploded and then sunk, it highlighted how desperate the world is for new oil. When oil was easy to find, no one would have bothered developing the sophisticated, expensive, and risky technology that now sits in 5,000 feet of water in the Gulf of Mexico. Instead of investing in non-renewable oil, how about removing regulatory hurdles to offshore wind, so instead of “Drill, baby, drill,” we “Build, baby, build” our wind farms?

Bristol Broadband Co-op - Green Party, Building your own Eco Home

This week we have in the studio the Green Party candidate for the new Bristol West constituency, Ricky Knight, who gives us his views and a message to voters. After boundary changes Bristol West now includes - along with retaining Clifton and the University area - St. Pauls, Easton and the Lawrence Hill/Barton Hill area. So far, since the general election was announced, we have spoken with representatives from the Labour and Conservative parties and in the interests of fairness offered a platform for the Liberal Democrats who unfortunately didn’t take up our invitation. We also have Neil Maggs of the Respect party, who are not standing in Bristol but he gives us his views all the same along with an enjoyable poem about the election and the Respect party. We have songs from the Albion Band which spell out a few of the realities of environmental issues. Tony Gosling interviews Caroline Barry on the lengths one has to go to to build and retain a true eco home. Anthea Page provides a feature on a rare breed of pig.
