Vancouver Bus Riders Union opposes fare increase

Translink is increasing the fare on monthly passes and strip tickets for transit users in Vancouver's Lower Mainland. The new prices will make the system inaccessible to many low-income residents of the region. The Bus Riders Union is campaigning on the buses and holding rallies to focus opposition to the fare hikes.

Café Justicia organizer forced to flee Guatemala

Leocadio Juaracán is the national coordinator of the CCDA, a campesino organization that work for human rights in Guatemala. In February he began receiving death threats. The CCDA produces Café Justicia to provide a decent living for the workers and to fund the political work of the Campesino Committee of the Highlands. Leocadio Juaracán explains why he was targeted in this talk recorded at Rhizome Café in Vancouver on March 11.

Holding Canadian Mining Companies Accountable

On March 6, 2009 we spoke with Marcia Ramirez, Carlos Zorilla and their Canadian lawyer Murray Klippenstein. These Ecuadorian villagers were in Canada to generate awareness about the lawsuit they were launching against the Copper Mesa Mining Company and the Toronto Stock Exchange in response to the environmental devastation that had been reeked on their community as a result of the Canadian mining company's actions.
In January of 2010 the Toronto Stock Exchange de-listed the Copper Mesa Company from the scrolls and the company lost 60% of its stock value over the next 48 hours. On March 25, 2010 the lawsuit against the Stock Exchange itself, as an enabler to the environmental devastation, proceeded with pre-trial hearings.
We spoke with lawyer Murray Klippenstien about the successes and challenges.

In that spirit, we have "Stop Making Synths." There's some excellent
stuff being produced in the realm of electronica--well, yer not gonna
hear it here! This episode of the Funhouse features the very worst
offerings from the world of ultra-shitty MIDI crap, PLUS an entire
massively bad electronic treatment of The Who's "Tommy" by some '70s-
era hacks! All the dreadful droning and dentist-drill squealing you
expect from this medium, and MORE! So much, in fact, I had to leave
the room while much of it was recording because I just couldn't stand
it. IT'S THAT GOOD.
I'll have to go back in and try to lift some of the pops out of the
vinyl--it's a compulsion. And that will mean I have to listen to this
stuff. Over and over. And I'm gonna start getting a little crazy. A
little crazy and mean...
And if you don't think I can be mean...? Did I mention that I begin
this show by SINGING??! *MWAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!*

This,of course,also means that I'm forced to do a "Punk You!" show next week. (I think we're safe after that,as "Jazz You!" or "Polka You!" don't exactly have the same punch as a Pop,Folk,or Punk You! have)
ANYWAY...
I had the pleasure of seeing two DYNAMITE folk acts last week as part of The Listening Room series,Hezekiah Jones,and Chris Kasper,both from the Philadelphia area (which apparently has quite the burgeoning folk scene).
And keeping with the Philadelphia theme,my good friend Mike McMonagle, (who had one of my top songs of last year with "The Big Sea" (http://wrir.org/x/modules/news/article.php?storyid=11648) recently moved back to his home town of Lancaster,Pa. (about an hour from Philly) and just recently recorded a couple of new tracks.
So I'll be playing tracks from all three of these artists and use that as a springboard for the rest of the show.

Organizing to Defend Poor Communities

Today, more and more services are being removed from East Downtown Toronto and the poor are being driven out of the area. The economic crisis and the current national debt will put more pressure on services and on the poor living in East Downtown and other poor neighbourhoods in
Toronto over the next few years.
How will people organize themselves today to fight against poverty and to defend neighbourhoods and services? What is the role of social agencies in this struggle? Can poor
communities learn from past struggles?
On Friday March 26, community workers, anti-poverty activists, and poor people who live in East Downtown gathered to discuss the various ways in which they can begin to fight for basic needs and services and defend the community. People from other communities were also on hand to share their experiences and struggles in this fight.
