Harper government behind cuts to Christian organization Kairos

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has stopped funding Kairos, saying it no longers fits CIDA priorities. Reverend Robert Assaly says he believes that the motivation for the cut is that Kairos runs a couple of programs that support Palestinian Christian organizations.

B.C. schools facing massive funding cuts

First Nations oppose pipeline from tar sands to the B.C. coast

The Wet'suwet'en is one of 50 First Nations whose territory will be crossed by the Northern Gateway pipeline. They are working with First Nations in the Alberta tar sands and all along the coast to apply pressure to prevent the pipeline from being built. Professor Joel Beinin is a Donald J. McLachlan Professor of Middle Eastern History in Stanford University's History Department. His knowledge of Middle Eastern Music is incredible, and he brought some wonderful pieces and fascinating stories.
The theme to his show is an introduction to the different instruments that make up the traditional Arabic or Turkish ensemble which is called a Takht or Takhat. His playlist features instrumental music initially and then includes some pieces with vocalists.

On todayâs program we bring you part 2 of our look at the crisis in Haiti following the destruction wrought by the Jan. 12th earthquake that struck the Island. On last weekâs program were aired the first part of an interview with local Haitian expatriate and activist Lionel Jean Baptiste. In that interview we discussed the 200 year history of relations between the U.S. and Haiti and how for the most part, that relationship has helped to ensure Haitiâs current state of poverty and under-development. On todayâs program will air the second part of that interview and discuss what that 200 years of bad history means for Haiti today, as the United States plays a leading role in relief efforts.
Will also air an interview with Kim Ives of the Haitian publication Haiti Liberte. In that interview we talk about what needs to happen to ensure that reconstruction efforts truly benefit the Haitians themselves.

Today we bring you part 1 of a 2 episode look at the history of Haiti, its relationship with the United States, and how this history has set the stage for the current crisis in Haiti following the earthquake of Jan. 12th. On this episode will air an interview with Haitian solidarity activist and Evanston alderman Lionel Jean Baptiste. Mr. Baptiste will discuss how since its successful war for liberation in the early 19th century, the United States government has done its best to try to prevent Haiti from successful developing true independence and autonomy and how this policy is at least partly to blame for making Haiti the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.

Audio from a rally and march held in downtown Chicago by Public Workers United, a new coalition of public sector workers and their community allies. They held a march on MLK day looking specifically at the state of public transit in Chicago.
Later in the program will here about a call for a boycott of Bissel products issued by a coalition of churches in the Joliet area. They announced the boycott at an MLK Day event in Joliet. The boycott is meant to show community solidarity with the warehouses workers at the Bissel products warehouse in Elwood Illinois who are fighting to get their jobs back after being fired when they announced to management their decision to form a union.
