Prairie's Edge Eco Village Living Simply and Exhaust Pollution Prevention

Daniel Brown lives a life of beautiful and joyous simplicity in Southeastern Manitoba, Canada. He is a founder and community member of Prairie's Edge Eco Village. The community raises a large part of the food they eat: squash, potatoes, carrots, beets, parsnips, tomatoes, peppers, onions, and beans. The community's gardens are out in the open prairie. The forests of the Canadian Shield provide wood for heating and cooking. Streams from the eastern hills bring drinking water to the Eco Village. Hand saws and an electric chain saw powered by a windmill and solar panels minimize the exhaust pollution of burning gasoline in a chain saw. Daniel burns about a gallon of gas a year in his gasoline powered chain saw, using it only to fell the trees. The strawbale home is easy to heat. South facing windows bring in the warmth of the sun. The wood stove is used mainly for cooking. Daniel lives in harmony with Nature and he finds great happiness in this way of life. His sense of close connection to the land and the myriad wonderful experiences of living a simple, Earth centered life fill him with what his heart loves. Of all the activities in his life, Daniel most enjoys gathering in the squash at harvest time, searching for the great squash under the squash vines in the frosted fields.

Salma Abu Ayyash (whom we previously had the privilege of interviewing on this program as our distinguished guest) puts together a summary of current pertinent happenings in both Palestine and the United States. With it she offers her analysis and comments. As trapped and impoverished as they are, our brethren the Gazans have recognized the all too familiar signs of misery and are actually donating their own resources to Haiti relief! In other developments, our awful Massachusetts senatorial candidates bickered with each other in their awful campaigns as to which one loves Israel the most.

Art for Cancer Prevention Education

Tom Geoghan is a Nature artist whose vivid colors evoke the exciting depths of closeness to the Earth. I first saw his work on display at the St. Lawrence County Arts Council gallery in Potsdam, New York. Thinking that these images would be perfect for creating cancer prevention education brochures and posters that address pollutant carcinogen exposure avoidance and pollution prevention, I contacted Tom about using his artwork. I'll never forget what he said. "You can use everything that I have ever painted." We talk about his inspiration for creating great art. We share our thoughts on how to save the Earth we both love so much from destruction by corporations that only know greed. In this interview we come up with a new kind of gathering, an activist art festival that I am calling the Activism for Mother Earth Open Stage. The idea is to bring people together to share their artwork, poetry, music and dance for environmental protection. During the course of the gathering the participants conceive of a collective environmental action and then do it. I would like to have such a gathering in the Adirondacks this Summer, and am already beginning to create an Activism for Mother Earth Open Stage in the Ithaca area for April Earth Month.
