John Arquilla– "Networks and Netwars"
May 12, 2023, 4:30 a.m.
The war that the United States has invoked in what is often called the “War On Terror” is unusual in many ways. One of those ways is that this war is being fought against a network that is spread out in many unsuspecting and obscure places. It is not being fought as many wars have been in the past, directly against another county. Dr. John Arquilla, is a professor of defense analysis and co-director of the justify on Terrorism at the Naval Post-Graduate School in Monterey, California. In this program we talk with Professor Arquilla about the fighting tactics employed by networks as opposed to countries, the threats they pose, and some of the war tactics used against these networks.
John Arquilla recommends “Kim,” by Rudyard Kipling.

Sonic Cafe #338/America Has A Problem With Food
May 11, 2023, 10:43 p.m.
Sonic Café, with Games People Play, the Alan Parsons Project from 1980, so welcome to another hour of intelligent, eclectic music, comedy and pop culture. It’s a thing we call the Sonic Café, this is episode 338 and I’m your host Scott Clark. America has a problem with food, we want our food to be cheap and fast, but also fresh and healthy, which according to comedian Ronnie Chieng is too many things, he lays down the facts for us and has news stories to back up his claims. Then after the bottom of the hour comedian Jim Gaffigan politely asks the food industry to please stop with all the Kale propaganda. We’ll back up our two food justice warriors with a music mix carved from the last 47 years or so. We’ll spin up the Tom Waits classic, Jockey Full of Bourbon, also music from Hot Chip, the Abandoned Luncheonette from Hall & Oates, Haim, Collective Soul, Modest Mouse and of course many more as the Sonic Café comes to grips with ahh America’s strained relationship with our food. All straight ahead from our little café way out here on the big blue Pacific coast. Here’s Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros from Global A Go-Go, and we’re the Sonic Café.

National Citizens Inquiry: Canada's Response to COVID-19
May 11, 2023, 9:13 p.m.
On this very special broadcast, we are bringing you some highlights of the National Citizens Inquiry: Canada’s Response to COVID-19. The hearings have so far been conducted in six cities with two more coming by the middle of this month. I should also point out in the interests of full transparency that I myself engaged in presenting a viewpoint to the Inquiry when it was in Winnipeg one month ago, in spite of some condemnation by notable individuals and virtually no coverage by mainstream press.
I should also alert you that some listeners may find messaging against the common beliefs about COVID treatment across the board to be extremely troubling. I urge listeners to express discretion before proceeding further with the broadcast.
Speakers include Emergency physician Dr Charles Hoffe, Former mainstream media representative Rodney Palmer, Saskatoon resident Marjaleena Repo, and Trucker Dave Hartmann. Also an interview with NCI spokesperson Michelle Leduc Catlin.

Decarbonizing Based on Need, not LEED
May 11, 2023, 10:35 a.m.
This is the story of a research collaboration between the city of Chicago, community organizations, a utility, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to find out the best way to retrofit homes and lower energy bills for Chicago's low income residents.
I'm giving away the punchline, but the results convinced me that it's far better for the climate and justice to eliminate fossil fuel heating in lots of low income homes than to spend the same amount of money completely decarbonizing a lesser number. We need to do it all eventually, but this is the way to make big change fast.

"All Things Cage" is a weekly program featuring conversations between Laura Kuhn, Director of the John Cage Trust, and Cage experts and enthusiasts from around the world. If youd like to propose a guest or a topic for a future program, write directly to Laura at lkuhn@johncage.org.Laura Kuhn presents the first recording of John Cages Europera 5, preceded by her reading Recollections of the Premiere Performance by Yvar Mikhashoff. This recording of Europera 5 was produced by Brian Brandt and released on the Mode Records label as Mode 36 in 1995, with performers Yvar Mikhashoff, Martha Herr, Gary Burgess, Jan Williams, and Don Metz. Europera 5 is the last and most diminutive of Cages operas " preceded by Europeras 1 & 2 (1984-1987) and Europeras 3 & 4 (1991) " and was instigated by pianist Yvar Mikashoffs desire for a small, more practical and portable, and more easily performed work in the series, which had its premiere in Buffalo at the North American New Musical Festival on April 12, 1991.

Tune in "Turn On The News" each week for the latest news, radio art, and more from our robot reporters, making sure you hear both sides -- good and evil -- every time you "Turn On The News." Democracy Now and Mondoweiss: Two media sources that elevate the Palestinian narrative (R)
May 11, 2023, 2:47 a.m.
An exception to the denial of broadcasting the Palestinian narrative in the US is Democracy Now, hosted by Amy Goodman on Free Speech TV, and on WZBC at noon each weekday. A few days ago, the news program featured Palestinian attorney Diana Buttu and Israeli journalist Gideon Levy, in a segment we now re-broadcast. It's an illustration of the kind of reporting that should be available to us throughout the US media, but is not. A second source that highlights the Palestinian voice is the online news service Mondoweiss, which offers a podcast that elevates the Palestinian narrative with outstanding news and analysis. Today we'll present a podcast that features Josh Ruebner, a Palestinian rights activist and adjunct professor at Georgetown University. (From 1-15-2023)

May 10, 2023, 7:08 a.m.
The Land Back Symposium was a day-long event at Cal Poly Humboldt, Arcata, held on March 24. The meeting broke many taboos and told the story how a powerful movement of land return is spreading across the world and - at least in California - has even reached some support by state government.

She is Cal Poly Humboldt’s Native American Studies Department Chair.

Sasha Buchert of Lambda Legal: The Case For LGBTQ Equality
May 10, 2023, 3:32 a.m.
The passage of time has generally moved us in the direction of increased dignity and rights for members of the LGBTQ community in this country, with marriage equality officially recognized in 2015. But since then, the US Supreme Court has taken a sharp turn to the right, and we are now looking at the erosion of some hard-fought gains. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to Sasha Buchert, a senior attorney at Lambda Legal about the many angles from which the right wing is attacking America’s LGBTQ community. We look at the battle to maintain fundamental human rights, talk about the struggles that transgender children are facing in states like Florida and Iowa, and examine the impact that uniformed LGBTQ personnel are making in the military, nearly a decade into achieving the right-to-serve openly. We also distinguish high-leverage legal issues from provocative but less substantive culture war misdirects.
