Growing violence against working-poor migrants in Canada

In response to these recent raids that have occurred under the public's noses, there have been many mass public actions throughout Canada denouncing these dehumanizing attacks on racialized working-poor (im)migrant communities, including in Guelph, ON. Fuerza/Puwersa along with Migrant Matters Radio organized a potluck dinner and panel on April 30, 2009 in Downtown Guelph. This "Status for All!" May Day Dinner event featured speakers from several different associations including Janet McLaughlin (researcher on migration and instructor at the University of Guelph), Marco Luciano (coordinator with Migrante Ontario), Craig Fortier (organizer with No One Is Illegal-Toronto), and Benny Quay (International Student Advisor, University of Guelph).

Since October 2008, six explosions have damaged sour gas pipelines in the Tomslake area in the province of British Columbia. The pipeline are owned by Calgary-based EnCana Energy. The company is now offering a million-dollar to anyone who can track down who's behind the sabotage.

Toufic Haddad is an American-Palestinian based in Jerusalem and a journalist for the on-line newspaper Faster Times. He is also the co-author of Between the Lines: Israel, the Palestinians, and the U.S. War on Terror.
Haddad speaks with Mordecai Briemberg about the history of organizing efforts in Palestine from 2000 to the present day. He discusses the relative strengths and weaknesses of Fatah, Hamas and the secular Palestinian left.

Eye-witness account of resistance and repression in Honduras

Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was forced into exile following a military coup in June. He staged a return to Honduras on September 21. Thousands of Hondurans defied the coup regime's orders and gathered in front of the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa, where Zelaya was in refuge. Steve Steward is with CoDevelopment Canada. He was in Honduras for several days in September and brings this report.

Entergy's Plans to Spin Off Its Nukes--Good for Vermonters?

Entergy wants to spin off ownership of Vermont Yankee, leaving the parent corporation without liability for the nuclear power plant. Vermont's Department of Public Service first opposed the move, but now they have agreed to it.
Thomas Weiss has reviewed the laws and thinks the Department has exceeded its authority, and that it's not protecting the interests of Vermonters it's required to protect. Don Kreis of Vermont Law School wonders how the spinoff can be in the interest of Vermonters.
AARP Leads Transportation Coalition & DIY Home Fuel-Saving Workshops

The AARP's project Transporting the Public is building a coalition to increase transportation choices in the state. Jennifer Wallace-Brodeur, the associate state director of AARP in Vermont, will explain what transportation choices their members want to see.
In the Button-Up Vermont program, Vermonters learn to save heating dollars. Paul Markowitz coordinates the program, and he'll talk about upcoming workshops.
