Oil companies are some of the most profitable corporations in the world. Yet they receive between 20 and 40 billion dollars a year in subsidies, according to a report produced for the OECD by Earth Track, an independent energy information research organisation in Boston, Massachusetts.

Steve Staples of the Rideau Institute says the costs include not only the cost of keeping 2500 soldiers in Kandahar but also the costs of health care for hundreds of wounded soldiers and the economic loss to families and communities for the soldiers who are either killed or disabled. He says that Canadian MPs did not know the true cost of the mission when they voted to extend it.
