Corporations stand to make billions of dollars from the Olympic Games but the profits won't trickle down to the citizens of Vancouver. VANOC has repeatedly turned down requests to create a fund that would make the 2010 Olympics the first socially-sustainable Games. Am Johal has been pushing for the involvement of civil society in the Games since the bid went in.

The downtown core of Vancouver is built out, leading developers to set their sights on the downtown eastside where more than 1300 units of housing have been lost since Vancouver won the Olympic bid. The City of Vancouver bought 18 SRO hotels over the past year but local housing activists say that more action is needed to prevent a sharp rise in homelessness by the time of the Winter Games.
Security for the 2010 Olympics

Security costs for the 2010 Olympics have ballooned from $175 million in the 2002 Bid Book to a recent estimate of one billion dollars by Stockwell Day. This will cover everything from military camps along the Sea to Sky Highway to RCMP sitting in cruise ships out in the harbour. We speak with Chris Shaw about how threat assessments have been made and what the response of the security forces will be.
VANOC monopolizes public ad space

For the ten weeks surrounding the 2010 Olympics, no-one will be able to buy advertising in a public space unless they are sanctioned by the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Winter Olympics.VANOC has made a blanket purchase of every major supply of ad space in outdoor and public venues in the Lower Mainland for the 10 weeks surrounding the Games. The BC Civil Liberties Association have made a complaint to the Competition Bureau.

Long before the IOC made the decision to hold the 2010 Winter Olympics in British Columbia, the City of Vancouver had to sign an agreement that they would assume 100% of the debt as a condition of bidding on the Games. Once the Games are over, host cities have no option but to raise taxes or cut services to cover the shortfall. We speak with Michael Shapcott, founder of Bread Not Circuses.
