Welcome to "The Radio Art Hour," a show where art is not just on the radio, but is the radio. "The Radio Art Hour" draws from the Wave Farm Broadcast Radio Art Archive, an online resource that aims to identify, coalesce, and celebrate historical and contemporary international radio artworks made by artists around the world, created specifically for terrestrial AM/FM broadcast, whether it be via commercial, public, community, or independent transmission. Come on a journey with us as radio artists explore broadcast radio space through poetic resuscitations and playful celebrations/subversions of the complex relationship between senders and receivers in this hour of radio about radio as an art form. "The Radio Art Hour" features introductions from Philip Grant and Tom Roe, and from Wave Farm Radio Art Fellows Karen Werner, Andy Stuhl, and Jess Speer. The Conet Project's recordings of numbers radio stations serve as interstitial sounds. Go to wavefarm.org for more information about "The Radio Art Hour" and Wave Farm's Radio Art Archive.

Helen Caldicott and Michael Madsen: Into Eternity - from the TUC Archives
Aug. 17, 2022, 5:06 a.m.
The shelling around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine and the managed acceptance of Onkalo, the underground storage site for nuclear waste in Finland, are in the August 2022 news while I am updating this re-broadcast.
Helen Caldicott called Madsen "One of the more extraordinary people I've ever interviewed”. This is a thought provoking exchange between the veteran campaigner, Helen Caldicott, who dedicated her life to alerting us to the nuclear danger, and the young Danish artist. In his documentary film he introduces thoughts about civilization, language, danger and eternity.
Into Eternity is a film about the building of the world's first permanent repository for nuclear waste in Finland. It shows not only the construction under way that will take 140 years, but introduces the people involved, the scientists, regulators and corporate executives who oversee this project. None of them will be alive when Onkalo, as the repository is called, will be finished in 2120; and they must expect this repository to remain intact and untouched by future humans for at least 100,000 years.
This is a re-broadcast of Helen's interview from her weekly radio program, If You Love This Planet, first broadcast in July 2011.

Bianca Fortis on Florida's Efforts to Disenfranchise Former Prisoners
Aug. 16, 2022, 10:04 p.m.
Florida sort of defines the term "swing state." The smallest of variables can push the outcome of Florida's elections in one direction or another - in the year 2000 it was "hanging chads" and more recently it appeared it would be the re-enfranchisement of former felons. In 2018, Florida voters overwhelmingly passed Amendment 4, which restored the voting rights of most felons who had completed their sentences. This was a particularly important turn of events given the massive number of Floridians who could not vote due to felony convictions. Republican leadership in the state, however, has been working tirelessly to undermine the will of the people by making it harder for the formerly incarcerated to exercise their franchise. Some of the obstacles that have been erected include a requirement to clear all debts in order to vote - some former felons have actually been criminally prosecuted for voting without paying what in effect amounts to a poll tax. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to journalist Bianca Fortis who has written an investigative piece chronicling right wing efforts to keep Florida’s most vulnerable populations from participating in the democratic process. Then we dip into the archives to listen to our 2020 discussion with groundbreaking health physicist and nuclear expert, Hattie Carwell.

She recounts the attack on her character and how corporate media tried to ruin her life for speaking out. She links the corrupt media-corporate government nexus to the lies being reported as news from Ukraine.
Garland Nixon refers to himself a "radio guy". But unlike most he has a knowledge of class struggle, the benefit of unions in that struggle, and the role imperialism plays in supporting a "standard of living" in the U.S. long taken for granted, and why the ruling class, having pissed off workers in other countries with death squads and non stop abuse, has now turned inward to strip mine the U.S. economy of both public and private wealth in search of "profit". He tells the story of how he met Paul Robeson, Jr who became his mentor and offered a window on the racial and political fight of his father against the fascist at the core of U.S. industry and business culture that were out to destroy any resistance to their form of savage capitalism: neoliberalism. He recounts a visit to Venezuela where the government builds houses for those who need them in contrast with U.S. where disposable workers die on the street and a college graduate can graduate with a house payment but no house. He broadcast on Pacifica KPFA and also RT.
Dust James a working class truck driver, organizer speaks about NAFTA, how it displaced people on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. He speaks about how he became a committed Marxist Leninist and what he has witnessed traveling the lower 48 that is both burning and smoldering.

Professor John Mearsheimer on the "special relationship" with Israel
Aug. 13, 2022, 8:30 p.m.
This week we continue our exploration of the so called special relationship between the United States and Israel, a relationship that guarantees the continuing world power of this Apartheid state while it carries out its brutal military occupation of Palestinian land. In March of 2006, John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago, and Steven Walt of Harvard published their seminal book, The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy, revealing the machinations of the powerful Israeli Lobby. Mearsheimer has stayed with the subject ever since. Here he gives an update to the Special US/Israel relationship as he sees it through his research. We begin with his introduction at a forum sponsored by the Washington Report on Middle East ‘affairs in Washington, DC.
