Welcome to "The Radio Art Hour," a show where art is not just on the radio, but is the radio. "The Radio Art Hour" draws from the Wave Farm Broadcast Radio Art Archive, an online resource that aims to identify, coalesce, and celebrate historical and contemporary international radio artworks made by artists around the world, created specifically for terrestrial AM/FM broadcast, whether it be via commercial, public, community, or independent transmission. Come on a journey with us as radio artists explore broadcast radio space through poetic resuscitations and playful celebrations/subversions of the complex relationship between senders and receivers in this hour of radio about radio as an art form. "The Radio Art Hour" features introductions from Philip Grant and Tom Roe, and from Wave Farm Radio Art Fellows Karen Werner, Andy Stuhl, and Jess Speer. The Conet Project's recordings of numbers radio stations serve as interstitial sounds. Go to wavefarm.org for more information about "The Radio Art Hour" and Wave Farm's Radio Art Archive.

Sonic Café. Yeah that’s easy for him to say. German hip-hop group whose’ name translates to The Fantastic Four, a name taken from the Marvel superhero franchise. From Sicily we’ll hear from Agricantus, Garmana from Sweden, the World Saxophone Quartet, from ahh like everywhere. Louise Vertigo from France, and well you get the idea. Also listen for something we think you are unlikely to hear on any other radio program as the Sonic Café presents an acoustic cover of Nirvana’s Smell’s Like Teen Spirit, performed in ancient Latin. Ahh yes, now you can rock out like the Roman’s did! All that and probably some other neat stuff too as the Sonic Café brings you Music From All Over The World served up alfresco from that little radio café from way out in the Pacific northwest. Ukraine: It’s Not What They’re Telling You - Ray McGovern

May 11, 2022, 2:05 a.m.
On April 19, 2022, the former CIA analyst Ray McGovern spoke in a talk sponsored by the Social Justice Forum, Raleigh. Excerpts on this program focus on nuclear weapons, the Maidan Coup, and the Minsk Agreement. McGovern’s CIA career began under President John F. Kennedy, and lasted through the presidency of George H.W. Bush. McGovern advised Henry Kissinger during the Richard Nixon administration. Under Ronald Reagan he chaired the National Intelligence Estimates and prepared the President’s Daily Brief. He received the Intelligence Commendation Medal at his retirement, returning it in 2006 to protest the CIA's involvement in torture. McGovern had been invited by the Social Justice Forum, Raleigh, to fill in what was not talked about in the media regarding Ukraine. There was a palpable desire to go beyond the prevailing discussion whether Putin is a satan or a saint and address the global consequences of any war conducted among nuclear power plants and in the shadow of nuclear weapons. Here is Ray McGovern’s comment on the question of how a cease fire could be achieved. You can find the full 90 min recording of the Zoom: Ukraine: It’s NOT What They’re Telling You on Ray McGovern website https://raymcgovern.com/ Or on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NczKnBB0Pw

States Newsroom: A Novel Approach To State-Level News

May 10, 2022, 11:02 p.m.
There are forces in the US that like to selectively bring up "states rights" from time to time - with the impending decision stripping the federal protections for access to safe abortion, this is one of those times. But most of us don't methodically monitor what happens in states that are not our own. Wouldn't it be nice if there were a single source where one could find reliable reporting on state-level politics and policies? This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to the Founder and Publisher of the States Newsroom, Chris Fitzsimon. We discuss the business model for this nonprofit news outlet, the landscape of the online news industry, and why it's more vital than ever to deliver readers truthful, well-presented local news. Then, we revisit part of last year's discussion with Liz King, the Director of Education at the Leadership Council on Civil and Human Rights, as she outlines the battle over civil rights in our nation's public schools.
