Building Bridges: Legacy of Violence: A History of British Empire

Oct. 13, 2022, 4:48 p.m.
An extraordinary forum sponsored by Revolution Books and hosted by Raymond Lotta, writer for rev.com.us featuring Caroline Elkins, a Pulitzer-prize winning author (Imperial Reckoning: The Untold Story of Britain's Gulag in Kenya) discusses her new book Legacy of Violence: A History of British Empire. Elkins is also joined by Maya Jasanoff, author of The Dawn Watch: Joseph Conrad in a Globalized World. Legacy of Violence could not be more relevant in the wake of the wall-to-wall mourning of Queen Elizabeth, and the sentimentalizing/obfuscation of brutality underlying the empire the sun never set on. Elkins rips off the veil to reveal how slavery, genocide, pillage and plunder is the foundation of the global British empire.

"All Things Cage" is a weekly program featuring conversations between Laura Kuhn, Director of the John Cage Trust, and Cage experts and enthusiasts from around the world. If youd like to propose a guest or a topic for a future program, write directly to Laura at lkuhn@johncage.org.Laura Kuhn presents the first recording of John Cages Europera 5, preceded by her reading Recollections of the Premiere Performance by Yvar Mikhashoff. This recording of Europera 5 was produced by Brian Brandt and released on the Mode Records label as Mode 36 in 1995, with performers Yvar Mikhashoff, Martha Herr, Gary Burgess, Jan Williams, and Don Metz. Europera 5 is the last and most diminutive of Cages operas " preceded by Europeras 1 & 2 (1984-1987) and Europeras 3 & 4 (1991) " and was instigated by pianist Yvar Mikashoffs desire for a small, more practical and portable, and more easily performed work in the series, which had its premiere in Buffalo at the North American New Musical Festival on April 12, 1991.

Pathway to a Negotiated Peace in Ukraine with Prof. Jeffrey Sachs

Oct. 12, 2022, 3:28 a.m.
The New York based organization Brooklyn For Peace invited Prof. Jeffrey Sachs to help devise a strategy to prevent nuclear war by negotiating a peace agreement. In their introduction to this talk on October 6, 2022, they praised him as a world-renowned economics professor and bestselling author. Sachs serves as the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, where he holds the rank of University Professor. Jeffrey Sachs is very familiar with Russia and the former Soviet Union. Soviet President Gorbachev, and then Russian President Yeltsin, invited him to advise them on the transition from central planning to a market economy. He also observed directly the history and expansion of NATO. Brooklyn For Peace has begun a campaign to ask the New York State congressional delegation to sign on to a letter drafted by Representative Pramila Jayapal from Washington State. The letter is addressed to President Biden calling on him to take crucial steps to help bring an end to this war.  Rather than simply sending more weapons, these steps include: Making “vigorous diplomatic efforts in support of a negotiated settlement and ceasefire; engaging in direct talks with Russia; exploring prospects for a new European security arrangement acceptable to all parties that will allow for a sovereign and independent Ukraine.” These are excerpts from the sign on letter to President Biden drafted by Representative Pramila Jayapal. Running

Oct. 10, 2022, 3:47 p.m.
This time on The Children's Hour we explore running with runners who were inspired by their running, and who inspire others. First, we meet artist, author, and blind Olympic champion runner, George Mendoza. His running and athleticism inspire amazing art. His paintings illustrate the new book, Colors of the Wind: The Story of Blind Artist and Champion Runner George Mendoza. You'll meet George, and hear his book. Then, we are joined by kids and adults from Running Medicine, a project of the Native Health Initiative where whole communities run together, no matter age, ability, or skill level. Leanne, Joshua, Payton and Maya from Running Medicine teach us about how running together has helped them in ways beyond just the physical. Learn the science behind what makes running so uniquely beneficial for our bodies, minds and our spirits. Finally we meet Gabe Vasquez, a runner whose running supports his run for Congress. Gabe is running for New Mexico Congressional District 2, and the Kids Crew wanted to find out more about how he copes with the stress on the campaign trail. Mixed with great music, get inspired to run with us, on The Children's Hour!
