Sonic Cafe #279/Who's Number One Anyway?

March 3, 2022, 6:43 a.m.
Sonic Café. Like a Stone, that’s music from Audioslave. Welcome to the program. I'm your host Scott Clark and this is episode 279. Is the United States number one in the world? If so what is the chance of retaining that admittedly dubious title this century? Well to add some fuel to fire the debate listen for comedian Daniel Tosh on something we’re calling Who’s Number One Anyway, this time on the Sonic Café. We’ve ahh encapsulated Daniel’s thoughts in a music mix resuscitated from roughly the last 20 years or so. Including tunes from Cake, the Carsick Cars, Carlos Santana, All Time Low, Eric Bibb, Bryan Ferry and of course many more. Also, if you have the unstoppable urge to tell kids to get off your lawn, you may be experiencing symptoms of Early Onset Grumpiness, a serious and mostly untreatable health condition. Stay tuned to the Sonic Café to learn how to identify the early signs, so you can seek treatment before it’s too late. Ahh so all that and more straight ahead as the Sonic Café poses the question, Who’s number one anyway? This time from that little café in awe-inspiring Pacific Northwest… here’s 2008 music from Dear & The Headlights. We’re the Sonic Café.

Ukraine is on the Brink of a Nuclear Catastrophe

March 1, 2022, 9:28 p.m.
QUOTE: “We are in an unprecedented situation. For the first time a war is being fought in a region where there are operating nuclear reactors. This presents an extreme risk to human life unlike anything we have seen in previous wars.” That’s a statement from Beyond Nuclear, of Feb. 25, 2022. For a relatively small country the nuclear statistics are impressive: Ukraine operates 15 reactors, ranking 7th in the world in 2020. The single largest nuclear power plant in Europe is in Ukraine. Ukraine's power sector is the twelfth-largest in the world in terms of installed capacity. 54 gigawatts are providing over 50% of Ukraine’s electricity. Linda Pentz Gunter presents a list of 6 catastrophes that can befall a nuclear power plant - from taking a direct intentional or accidental missile strike to the collapse of the grid to operating personnel being unable or unwilling to come to work. Dr. Ira Helfand is part of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapon (ICAN). Helfand also is a co-Founder and past President of Physicians for Social Responsibility. He describes the consequences of nuclear strikes on major cities. He and Linda Pentz Gunter participated in a Zoom meeting on the topic of War in Eastern Europe: On the Brink of a Humanitarian Disaster. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aPPU2eexnE They met on February 19, 2022.

UN treatment of African prisoners reveals old colonial cruelty

March 1, 2022, 4:26 p.m.
The so-called International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda was designed along the lines of the old colonial order and reflected the methods of the penal systems of the empires. For example the headquarters of the Tribunal is the Hague, but the African(Rwandan) prisoners were to be tried in Africa for "social and cultural reasons" said the court. And when they were convicted or acquitted they remained in Africa, scattered about to suit the informal colonial system of old. Some are in Mali where their resident status is not being renewed; eight were recently sent to Niger but now face expulsion. For the European masters of this system it is "out of sight, out of mind." It is time for a loud resistance to this injustice.

Anne Clunan on the Russian Invasion of Ukraine

March 1, 2022, 3:58 p.m.
War has suddenly returned to Europe. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been swift, shocking, and devastating. In addition to killing thousands of civilians and soldiers, the incursion has rocked global financial markets and galvanized the West against Russia in ways not seen since the Cold War. This week on Sea Change Radio, we talk to Russian foreign policy expert Dr. Anne Clunan to learn more about this unilateral act of military aggression. We examine Vladimir Putin’s possible motivations in invading a sovereign nation like Ukraine, look at the ways the war will affect energy markets, and talk about how Russia’s massive nuclear arsenal may influence diplomatic and military strategy.

NATO caused the war in Ukraine

March 1, 2022, 3:50 p.m.
The Chinese UN ambassador, after affirming the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and Russia's right to security, stated the matter clearly: It would be best if Ukraine was a bridge between East and West rather than a frontier. Trying to make Ukraine into an outpost or frontier against Russia-Asia is an old noxious habit of Western states thinking of themselves as crusaders and masters of the world. Such notions let them destroy Libya, despite the pleas of the African Union, without so much as a peep from the haughty liberals of the West.
