American "exceptionalism" prevents international cooperation

If Canada wants to be proud of its diversity, proud of being a "multicultural country," it needs to stop echoing the United States. It aligns itself exclusively with European and white countries. But the world is changing. Also, on the subject of COVID-19, the U.S. has over 100K new cases a day. Those were once known as Trump-numbers, but now its happening under Biden. There are rising numbers in Europe, as well. The U.S., U.K., and European countries are showing mass discontent over COVID regulations due to class and ethnic districting, and suspicion. The Western media can't bring themselves to say that the Chinese people have confidence in their government, and that's the reason the Chinese are doing so well. The long-term cure for the US/EU is a people's government. Instead, suspicion and hostility are increasing in the U.S./E.U., due to deep dislike and distrust of the people for the American political and media elite.

U.S. meddlers behind Tigray "Crisis"

Phil interviews Ann Garrison of Black Agenda Report and KPFA radio about the "civil war" in Ethiopia. She posits that the TPLF (Tigray People's Liberation Front) is being used by the USA and EU to break up Ethiopia much in the same way they did the former Yugoslavia, using "humanitarian interventionism" as an excuse, and buzzwords such as "humanitarian corridors," "humanitarian relief" just as they do in Syria. Garrison and Taylor observe that Ethiopia's sovereignty is disrespected by the US and its allies in Europe. They presume the imperial right to interfere in the internal affairs of African countries. The Tigray region is part of Ethiopia, and must be resolved by Ethiopians. A great deal is at stake for Africa in the Ethiopian conflict as the issue of the water of the Nile affects a number of Northern African countries, and because Ethiopia is an "anchor state" in the Horn of Africa.

Gray whales are dying in record numbers – over 400 have washed up on West Coast shores since 2019. And yet, scientists aren’t quite sure why. With all the man-made problems affecting ocean ecosystems, it’s hard to point to just one cause. But scientists do know that these majestic mammals are not getting enough nutrition. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to Susanne Rust, an environmental reporter for the Los Angeles Times, about her work tracking the plight of the gray whale. We learn about some of the steps that marine biologists are taking, how the food supply of gray whales has greatly decreased, and what it’s like to try to investigate this crisis during a global pandemic.

The First Nuclear Chain Reaction - Enrico Fermi and Henry Moore (TWO of TWO) - ARCHIVE

The Italian physicist Enrico Fermi set off the first nuclear chain reaction in an underground tennis-court at the University of Chicago in 1942. Exactly 25 years after that experiment, with Fermi already dead of radiation induced leukemia, a statue by Henry Moore was unveiled on December 2, 1967, at that location, to commemorate the first self sustained nuclear chain reaction. Boal describes the fascinating clash of ideas, from the early anti nuclear resistance by SDS students in the US and the British CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament), to the visual impression of Moore's statue that seems to depict a skull plus storm trooper helmet plus mushroom cloud. Ignoring the early resistance to nuclear power scientists still envisioned thousands of nuclear power plants while discussing already how one could possibly keep nuclear waste safe for tens of thousands of years. Iain Boal is co-editor of Resisting the Virtual Life, published by City Lights Books and wrote the history of the bicycle: The Green Machine (2011). Boal was educated at Oxford, Cambridge and London Universities and has taught at Harvard, Stanford and UC Berkeley.

A campaign to bring long-term care into the public health care system

Kevin Skerrett and Nancy Parker of the Make Revera Public campaign talk about their work pushing the federal government to transform Revera -- a major provider of long-term care in Canada -- from a for-profit corporation into a public sector entity and a fully integrated element of our public health care system. This campaign is happening in the wake of the terrible impact of COVID-19 on long-term care residents, particularly residents of for-profit, private sector homes, and is focusing on Revera because it is 100% owned by a public sector pension fund.

Annamie Paul Undermines Her Own Party

Phil talks with Tony Leah about the controversy surrounding Annamie Paul, Federal Leader of the Green Party. Leah points out that the root of the conflict is Paul’s opposition to her own Party’s policy on Israel and Palestine. As a result she has stubbornly remained silent about the outrageous statements by her adviser Noah Zatzman who called for the defeat of two Green Party Members of Parliament. Leah, Unifor Local 222 Political Action Chair, noted that the Green Party policy opposing the illegal Israeli occupation and settlements and endorsing boycotts, divestment and sanctions was endorsed by 91% of Green Party members in a referendum. Leah points out that while the Federal Council of the Green Party has tried to defend Party policy and called on Paul to disavow Zatzman, Paul has resorted to undemocratic legal maneuvers and gag orders. Annamie seems willing to damage her own Party in an effort to undermine support for Palestinian rights and BDS – in the same way that the right wing of the Labour Party preferred electoral defeat as a way to get rid of Jeremy Corbyn.
