Chicago Rally to Defend Julian Assange, Defend Press Freedom

June 20, 2021, 9:46 a.m.
Introductions by Andy Thayer of Chicago Committee Against War and Racism. Speakers address the importance of leaks in exposing the dark, corrosive to democratic institutions and lawless side of government when it goes too far in pursuit of a goal out of sync with the principles, mores and laws of society. Why else hide criminality behind the wall of 'National Security'. Drone murder, wars of aggression, international kidnapping, police terror, are but the tip of the iceberg in understanding the destructiveness of U.S. Capital abroad, and how CIA programs, once developed abroad to impose Wall Street interests, make their way back to the United States for use at home.* Australians John and Gabriel Shipton, farther and brother of Julian are touring the U.S. rallying his supporters and First Amendment Defenders to pressure Attorney General Merrick Garland to drop the charges and drop the extradition from Britian. They speak about the conditions he is held in, even though he won last January when the judge refused to extradite him to the U.S. having determined the prison conditions under which he would be held a threat to his safety and sanity.

Remembering Ramsey Clark's Fight for Leonard Peltier and Geronimo

June 19, 2021, 8:15 p.m.
The International Action Centre held a memorial for Ramsey Clark on June 13th. Many well-known people such as Danny Glover and Alice Walker delivered eulogies about Clark's participation in many areas of struggle. One area of struggle was indigenous. Clark worked for the release of Leonard Peltier, who was arrested in Canada and extradited to the USA. Peltier's arrest is part of a pattern, such as Sitting Bull who was later murdered by American authorities. Ramsey also represented the family of Geronimo, who wanted his body returned to them, as per an agreement struck during his lifetime in New Mexico. Ramsey Clark explained the case for Geronimo's transfer in an interview with the Taylor Report in 2009.

Growing Resistance to Two-Tier

June 18, 2021, 8:56 p.m.
Tony Leah, Political Action Committee Chair for UNIFOR Local 222 in Oshawa, discusses an ongoing strike at Vale Sudbury by USWA 6500. The workers recently rejected a contract offer that would deny post-retirement health benefits to any new hires. The Sudbury workers represent growing resistance to two-tier contracts. Leah notes that the tier system in the auto industry began during the financial crisis, but has been allowed to expand even when the auto companies returned to making obscene profits. However, in Quebec, the labour movement has successfully forced the provincial government to pass legislation that makes it illegal to impose worse wages, benefits, or pensions on workers based solely on their date of hire. Quebec labour has also ensured that the anti-scab law has remained in effect since being introduced by the Parti Quebecois in 1977. Workers in English Canada should really try and take a page from their Quebec counterparts. A good example is the recent Toronto strike by determined Nestle workers that had broad support. They achieved a contract that will bring 2nd tier workers up to equal wages in three years, and also increases pensions for longer-term workers. Leah calls for a coordinated strategy to fight tiered wages and benefits, that builds solidarity amongst workers across the country and internationally.
