Scott Lerner: Hydrogen Vehicle Update

June 1, 2021, 7:37 p.m.
Back in February of 2013 when we spoke to hydrogen vehicle expert Robert Boyd, the mass market appeal of hydrogen cars seemed somewhat limited to say the least — hydrogen was less than an ideal fuel for a number of reasons. But a lot can happen in eight years, and now the hydrogen car seems to be re-emerging as a viable alternative to our old gas guzzlers. This week on Sea Change Radio, we provide listeners an update on the hydrogen-powered vehicle with Scott Lerner, a writer who’s been driving a hydrogen-fueled Toyota Mirai since 2017. He tells us of the advantages and disadvantages of driving a clean fuel vehicle that’s not an EV, what hurdles the hydrogen vehicle industry faces, and why he thinks there’s a chance our nation’s enormous trucking fleet will someday be powered by clean-burning hydrogen gas.

Professor Ilan Pappe: The Idea of Israel

June 1, 2021, 11:41 a.m.
The Israeli historian Ilan Pappe spoke on September 14, 2018, at the City Club of Cleveland. Attempts were made to prevent Prof. Pappe from speaking, however the President of the Board of Directors of the City Club explained why they did not retract the invitation. She said that a forum devoted to freedom of speech will use this as an opportunity to reflect on the role the City Club plays in the community. We believe, she said, that our work requires us to listen and learn. As the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians continues, many question the very representation of the Zionist state. Ilan Pappe, Ph.D., Professor of History and Director of the European Centre for Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter, UK, is one of those critics. In his book, The Idea of Israel: A History of Power and Knowledge, he examines the role of Zionist ideology in shaping the country's academic and cultural institutions. Topics covered: Antisemitism, development of Jewish nationalism, and the referral of the question of Palestine to the UN. Palestinians did not accept the UN idea that more than half of Palestine was to be given to the Jews. Ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. NY Times and Red Cross reported on deportations. But the international community felt unable to be critical of Jews as victims of the recent Holocaust. Period of Settler Colonialism and Apartheid. The right of return for the Palestinians who were expelled before and after the founding of Israel in 1948. Professor Ilan Pappe was recorded by ideastream, Cleveland’s nonprofit public media company.

Support the Postal Workers and Save Our Po

June 1, 2021, 9:36 a.m.
Support the Postal Workers, theyre on the job to save our postal service with Jonathan Smith, president of the NY Metro Postal Workers Union The battle over the future of the Postal Service, which was a focus of American political life last year, is still on. Corrupt and incompetent Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced in March (with the backing of the present Postal Board of Governors, headed by Chair Ron Bloom) a 10-year plan to remake the post office from a constitutionally mandated public service into a corporate entity. The DeJoy-Bloom plan openly promises slower delivery times for much of the mail, steadily increasing postal rates, and reduced access to post offices. (What a combo!). It sets out the next terrain of battle in our fight to save our public postal service. It is no exaggeration to say that undermining the Peoples Service will weaken electoral democracy in this country. The savage ongoing attack on mail ballots is intentionally crafted to make it harder for poor people to vote.

Gowans exposes US 'Wuhan lab' dishonesty

May 31, 2021, 7:06 p.m.
Phil interviews Canadian author and political writer, Stephen Gowans, on Biden's political strategy in calling for a U.S. intelligence investigation of the origins of COVID-19. Gowans states that leaks of viruses from labs have taken place previously on three occasions around the world. A number of US labs have been closed for safety violations, including Fort Detrick in August 2019. As a consequence, Gowans argues it may not be a good idea for labs to work on live viruses. Biden wants it both ways. He wants to consider the possibility that COVID-19 was leaked from the Wuhan lab at the same time that he acknowledges there is no evidence of such a leak in Wuhan. Phil points out that Biden’s initiative demonizes the World Health Organization [WHO]. And the WHO has not visited Fort Detrick. Gowans notes that the USA is not a credible source of accusations. It’s not a disinterested party and its unreliability as a source has been shown in Iraq, Libya, Yugoslavia, Vietnam, and Syria. Biden’s initiative is an attempt to smear China.

The Long Struggle for Palestine

May 29, 2021, 8:48 p.m.
The USA is of the opinion that it has to be the one who cinches any deal on Palestine. At the United Nations Security Council, many member states supported the Chinese call for a ceasefire. China was in the presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of May. AOC introduced a resolution in the HR and Sanders introduced a similar one in the Senate to block the latest $735 million in US arms to Israel. There has been a sea change in support for Palestine and in the balance of power in Central Asia. Phil argues that the reason for the sea change is the growth in power and influence of Iran, and the Front of Resistance it leads. Iran and the Russian Federation insist that there must be a democratic solution to the occupation of Palestine - a democratic state in all of historic Palestine, which includes the return of all Palestinian refugees.

From Palestine to Alabama - The Revolutionary Transformation of the Working Class

May 29, 2021, 7:56 p.m.
A webinar sponsored by Workers World Party: www.workers.org The past few weeks have seen the extraordinary resistance of the Palestinian people against Zionist occupation and genocide greeted by an unprecedented outpouring of global solidarity with the Palestinian struggle. In addition to mass demonstrations, and rockets fired in response to Zionist bombings in Gaza, Palestinians organized a general strike on May 18, 2021. Thousands of miles away in Bessemer, AL, Amazon workers experienced a temporary setback when a vote to unionize was defeated after Amazon employed outrageous union-busting tactics. Despite the setback, workers continue to organize in Bessemer, and the outcome of the vote is being challenged at the NLRB in response to Amazon's manipulations. Amazon workers are also organizing elsewhere across the country, including in Staten Island, NY. What is the relationship between these developments? What do they signify for the development or global resistance of working and oppressed people against the ruling class? Join a conversation with Workers World Party First Secretary Larry Holmes this as we explore these questions. Interviewers: Romeo Channer, WWP candidate from the San Francisco Bay Area branch Judy Greenspan, Member WWP San Francisco Bay Area branch, Oakland public school teacher

#691 -- George Carlin at the National Press Club

May 29, 2021, 7:20 p.m.
George Carlin's address to the National Press Club on May 13, 1999. A little more restrained and more unified than Carlin's concert routines, the speech is packed with wit. humor. and Carlin's trademark iconoclasm. It's a 3-part satire on the degradation of language in America. Carlin targets first the b.s. of politicians, then the euphemisms loved by most citizens, and then the "politically correct" language of liberals. (Continued...)
