China lands on Mars
May 27, 2021, 1:33 p.m.
The CBC, Globe and Mail, and Star did not celebrate China's landing on Mars. We didn't hear about it - our media has entered full denial mode. They're still focused on lockdowns in Canada, while the Chinese ended theirs one year ago and went to Mars.
Demeaning China is the stock-in-trade of these mainstream media outlets, as they follow the dictates of the Five Eyes intelligence network (Canada, the USA, UK, Australia, and New Zealand) which unites five predominantly white, English-speaking Christian countries.
The Real American Dream - in Scandinavia #112
May 27, 2021, 12:46 p.m.
Taxcast host Naomi Fowler talks to millionaire and wealth tax campaigner Djaffar Shalchi of Millionaires for Humanity about his experience of moving from Iran at an early age to grow up in Denmark. He shares how highly he values the high tax Scandinavian society, as an entrepreneur, and as a human being. He also talks about his campaign for a 1% wealth tax on the worldâs top 1%.
Plus: US President Biden drops his proposal for a minimum global corporate tax rate from 21% to âat least 15%â which is bitterly disappointing.
However, so far the US administration is sticking to its plan to invest $80 billion in its tax authority, the IRS. Tax collectors will be able to refocus on the wealthiest and on corporate profits. Tax collectors could pull in an additional $700 billion over the next decade.
Also, how degrowth must begin with the very wealthy.
Israel Post Ceasefire: When the Dreams of Israelis Collide with the Hopes of Palestinians
May 27, 2021, 12:05 p.m.
This week on the Global Research News Hour, as a follow-up to last weekâs portrait of 11 days of violence in the past month, we will explore the numerous obstacles which continue to shape the ambitions of the Israeli occupation and the lives of the Palestinian people 73 years after Nakba. We first speak with Professor Michel Chossudovsky about the Dagan plan, the death of Yasser Arafat and other variables setting the stage for Israeli violence. Then we get an update from journalist Robert Inlakesh about what is currently happening on the ground between Israelis and Palestinians less than a week into the ceasefire. Finally, we hear from film producer Mike Prysner about his film production alongside Abby Martin of Gaza: Fight for Freedom.
Sonic Cafe #240/A Bit Twisted: Mitch Hedberg
May 27, 2021, 7:32 a.m.
Sonic Café, with the B-52âs, a truly underrated band, so how the heck you doinâ ? Welcome to another slightly twisted hour of eclectic music, comedy and pop culture from the Sonic Café. Iâm Scott Clark and this is episode 240. This time the Sonic Café presents the comedic ramblings of the late, great Mitch Hedberg. Mitch left us in 2005 at the age of 37. It seems like the great ones always flash out too soon. During his short, but brilliant career, his surreal brand of short one-liners and absurd non-sequiturs earned him a huge almost cult like following, with many declaring that Mitch was destined to be the next Jerry Seinfeld. To celebrate his quirky brand of humor the Sonic Café has pulled together an anthology of his stand-up performances and sprinkled them liberally throughout the show, which also includes a great mix of tunes from the last 23 years. Listen for DJ Shadow, the Killers, OMFO, Tom Petty, Republica, Arctic Monkeys and more, this time as the Sonic Café presents the miscellaneous ramblings of the late, great Mitch Hedberg from that little café on the coast. A place where the closer you listen, the better we sound. Weâre the Sonic Café.

Is anti-Zionism anti-Semitism? Israeli historian Ilan Pappe and former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis
May 25, 2021, 8:19 p.m.
The question put to Israeli historian Ilan Pappe by Intelligence Squared and recorded before the most recent attack on Gaza was: is anti-Zionism anti-Semitism?
His response, recorded on March 30, 2021, is an extraordinary mini-lecture on the origins of this argument and how it is now used to prevent the critique of Israeli policies.
Ilan Pappe is an expatriate Israeli historian and socialist activist. He is a professor with the College of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.
Pappé is one of Israel's New Historians. Since the release of pertinent British and Israeli government documents in the early 1980s, they have been rewriting the history of Israel's creation in 1948. And that includes the corresponding expulsion or flight of 700,000 Palestinians in the same year. An event that is remembered as Nakba, the Catastrophe.
Two months later, on May 20, 2021, when a fragile cease fire ended the most recent bombing of Gaza by Israel, the University of Exeter, UK, held a conference on the transition from capitalism to techno-feudalism. Ilan Pappé and Yanis Varoufakis were keynote speakers and they decided to dedicate part of their discussion to the recent events in Palestine/Israel.
Yanis Varoufakis is a Greek economist, college teacher, author and politician. A former member of the Syriza party, he served as Minister of Finance from January to July 2015 when he resigned in opposition to his partyâs fiscal politics. In the 2019 election Varoufakis regained a seat in the Greek Parliament. Varoufakis is now active in the anti Apartheid movement in solidarity with Palestinians.
Malavika Vyawahare: Commercial Tuna Pirates
May 25, 2021, 2:45 p.m.
When we hear the term âresource curse,â it usually refers to the exploitation of countries with rich stores of natural resources like fossil fuels or widely coveted metals and minerals. Today, however, we are talking about protein. Some of the most beautiful, remote parts on the planet also produce some of its most unsustainable protein sources. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with environmental journalist Malavika Vyawahare from the distant Indian Ocean island of Réunion to discuss the devastating and corrupt practices surrounding the tuna fishing industry in that part of the world. We learn about the destructive practice using fish aggregating devices (or FADs), how ships from wealthy European nations like Spain and France are exploiting law-of-the-sea loopholes, and what steps are being taken to prevent the regionâs fishery from being completed wiped out.

Part 2: From the River to the Sea Palestine Must be Free with Prof. Rashid Khalidi
May 25, 2021, 7:36 a.m.
Part 2: From the River to the Sea Palestine Must be Free " Free, Free Palestine!
with Rashid Khalidi, the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University and author of The Hundred Years War on Palestine
73 years since the onset of the catastrophe, with Apartheid Israel having believed Palestinian memories would fade away, has witnessed unity and courage of a people unbowed, relentlessly fighting for their land and rights, and resisting the last of the colonial monsters.
As in all anti-colonial struggles there is an agonising high price to pay. The death toll rises hourly in Gaza, the West Bank and throughout Palestine. The international community cannot remain indifferent, and it has been uplifting for the beleaguered Palestinian people to see they are not alone in their struggle for survival
