Sulaiman Khatib and Penina Eilberg-Schwartz: In This Place Together
April 29, 2021, 10:42 a.m.
As a Palestinian youth, Sulaiman Khatib encountered the occupation in his village and attempted to fight back, stabbing an Israeli. Imprisoned at the age of 14, he began a process of political and spiritual transformation still unfolding today. Together with Penina Eilberg-Schwartz, an American Jew, they wrote a book, "In This Place Together." Khatib shares how his activism became deeply rooted in the belief that we must ground all workâfrom dialogue to direct action to healingâin recognition of the history and humanity of the other. He reveals how he became convinced that Palestinian freedom can flourish alongside Jewish connection to the land where he was born.
ALSO: we discuss the need to gather more support for Rep. Betty McCollum's HB2590, the Defending the Human Rights of Palestinian Children and Families Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act. The Bill provides that âU.S. assistance intended for Israelâs security must never be used to violate the human rights of Palestinian children, demolish the homes of Palestinian families, or to permanently annex Palestinian lands.â âPeace can only be achieved by respecting human rights, especially the rights of children, and this includes the U.S. taking responsibility for how taxpayer-funded aid is used by recipient countries, Israel included. Congress must stop ignoring the unjust and blatantly cruel mistreatment of Palestinian children and families living under Israeli military occupation.â
Massachusetts has only one sponsor, Ayanna Pressley. What is interesting is who is missing. When McCollum introduced her first bill protecting Palestinian Children over four years ago, Katherine Clark, Jim McGovern and Seth Moulton were also sponsors. Where are they on this bill?

Our mix includes actual star sounds along with a star-crossed batch of tunes pulled from over 40 years. Listen for Starcastle, the Flaming Lips, Flunk, Broken Social Scene, Tears for Fears and many more. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with oceanographer and author John Englander to take a deep dive into rising sea levels and his book "Moving To Higher Ground." We examine the latest predictions by the scientific community, discuss the various challenges that coastal regions around the globe face, and ponder the policies needed to mitigate the encroaching threat of higher and higher tides.
Saving Redwoods in Northern California - Pomo Indian Perspective
April 27, 2021, 3:17 p.m.
A call for support went out early in 2021. Logging was to begin in a coast redwood forest in Mendocino County on the Pacific ocean that many of us believed was protected since it is owned by the State of California. The State purchased almost 50,000 acres from a bankrupt logging company in 1949. The Jackson Demonstration State Forest, located between the city of Willits inland and Fort Bragg on the coast, is managed by CalFire, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Research showed quickly that CalFire, except for a short pause, never stopped logging the land of their second growth coast redwoods. But now, in the age of climate change and devastating forest fires, their timber harvest plans come under intense scrutiny. CalFire claims their logging reduces fire danger; the community and fire ecologist say cutting large second growth redwoods takes out the trees that are most fire resistant. They also demand protection for coast redwoods in order to slow down climate change. Redwood trees can live for up to 2,000 years all the while removing carbon from the air.
In early April 2021 two of the biggest redwoods marked for cut were occupied by tree sitters and as of today, April 27, logging has not yet begun.
Meanwhile something else is holding up the chainsaws, bulldozers and road builders that are ready to begin logging. The local tribe of Pomo Indians is intervening in the process since much of the Jackson Demonstration State Forest is on their ancestral land. When this area was an intact old growth forest as recently as in the mid 18-hundreds there existed a network of villages and trails between the coast and the Little Lake Valley inland.
My thanks to the radio program Pomo Perspective and the Program Director of KZYX, Alicia Bales, for permission to rebroadcast a conversation that took place on April 19, 2021. You will hear from a Pomo tribal elder, Priscilla Hunter, and the long-time indigenous rights attorney, Polly Girvin. Opening music clip by Holly Near.

NDP Favors NATO Adventurism in Ukraine
April 27, 2021, 1:39 p.m.
Phil interviews Yves Engler about his latest article, entitled, "Does the NDP want a war with Russia?"
Yves describes the NDP as pro-military and pandering to the right-wing Ukrainian community in Canada. For these reasons, the NDP supports every Liberal budget proposal to spend $100s of billions on new fighter jets and warships.
The NDP supports Canadian military deployments to Latvia, Ukraine, and Romania, as well as Canadian naval deployments to the South China Sea, where it participates in 'Freedom of Navigation' exercises, despite the fact that the USA has never signed the relevant treaty.
According to Engler, despite the fact that it's so dangerous to station NATO troops right on Russia's borders, the NDP is always pushing the Liberal government to be even more aggressive.
There is a dichotomy between the NDP membership and the party hierarchy. In 1969, the membership passed a resolution at Convention to withdraw from NATO. Ed Broadbent, while leader, quietly removed the resolution from the resolutions book.
Currently, the party base prefers spending on social programs, infrastructure, and environmental protection. However, Randall Garrison, the party's defence critic, and Deputy Foreign Affairs Critic Heather McPherson are more shrill supporters of the military spending than the government itself.
While the Trudeau government talks incessantly about a "rules-based international order," it violates international law on a regular basis by levelling illegal unilateral sanctions on 19 countries and by meddling in the internal affairs of countries such as Venezuela and Syria.
All the while, the NDP demands even more resources for the Canadian military-security establishment. They do it because they want to avoid criticism from the mainstream media and certain ethnic groups for being off-message. The NDP's militaristic message puts Canadians in danger of war with Russia and China.
