Worker Voices and Collective Bargaining Processes Need to be Respected
Oct. 14, 2021, 2:06 p.m.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the capitalist command system we live under has dictated responses or non-responses to COVID without consulting the organized labour force. Nurses and other health workers fought disease in appalling conditions, at great risk. They were told they were heroes, but would not receive substantial pay increases, or even a greater voice.
Today, employers are rolling out vaccine mandates for workplaces. Some union leaderships, such as UNIFOR, have taken the position that employer dictates must be respected above all else. However, the top-down tactic of bullying and shaming employees into taking a vaccine will just frustrate things.
Workers have been on the frontline of the pandemic, as nurses and other medical roles, and performing the labour needed to keep society going. Unions are ready to implement public health measures. For those who refuse vaccines, there are workplace processes in place where people can put forward their case. We should respect the mechanisms that exist, and give a fair hearing to anyone who wants it. Overall, organized labour needs to become a voice in public health, and its role expanded.

The Executioners of the Corporate State - Chris Hedges interviews Steven Donziger
Oct. 12, 2021, 7:28 p.m.
Since 1993 attorney Steven Donziger has battled the oil giant Chevron on behalf of indigenous communities in the Amazon Basin. Their land has been polluted by toxic waste from oil drilling. 16 billion gallons of poisonous waste water that contained copper, mercury, lead and other carcinogens were dumped into rivers, lakes and impoundment ponds.
Steven Donziger, in 2013, helped lead the legal effort that won the largest court judgment in history for human rights and environmental justice, s $9.5 billion verdict against Chevron.
Chevron, following the verdict, sold their assets in Ecuador and left the country. The corporation threatened the plaintiffs with âA lifetime of litigationâ if they attempted to collect. According to internal memos Chevron launched a highly funded and sustained campaign to destroy Donzigerâs career.
To this day Chevron has not paid any of the $9.5 billion verdict to the indigenous communities whose land they polluted. And they proceed with their campaign against Steven Donziger. He was sentenced in federal court in New York on October 1, 2021, on contempt of court charges, which could send him to jail for six months.
Thanks to Chris Hedges for this interview with Steven Donziger. They spoke on October 9, 2021. Chis Hedges is an investigative journalist, New York Times former staff and best selling author; and television host of On Contact.
