2011: US Wedding Equality Rehearsal

Feb. 22, 2021, 6:27 p.m.
After decades of queer activists toiling in the civil rights kitchen, the table was ready to be set for marriage equality in the US ten years ago this week, when the Obama Administration decided to change course in its handling of marriage equality litigation. Our flashback from February 2011 includes Jon Daviddson of Lambda Legal explaining the implications of the revised Justice Department standard, Mary Bonauto of Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders recounting the stories of some of the plaintiffs involved, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney answering questions about the big announcement, Obama Campaign LGBT policy advisor Professor Tobias Wolff providing analysis of the move, and plaintiff Edie Windsor reacting to the decision. Just 15 months later, then-Vice President Joe Biden gave President Obama a shove into endorsing marriage equality. And in NewsWrap: The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights finds Jamaica’s anti-gay male sex laws in violation of LGBTQ constitutional rights, two Russian lesbian mothers denied asylum in Finland are vindicated by the U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child, ILGA-Europe’s 10th Annual Review gives dire warnings, the Equality Act gets a new vote in the House but faces difficulty in the Senate, and 2020 reports tally shocking Brazilian transgender murders and skimpy reporting in the U.S. on anti-trans violence, and more international LGBTQ news reported this week by Melanie Keller and Michael Taylor Gray (produced by Brian DeShazor).

Episode 2021.03.00. Will Biden Mimic Buchanan, Hoover or The Weimer Social Democrats

Feb. 21, 2021, 5:05 p.m.
We hear this every four years – this is the most crucial election, blah, blah, blah. Well ladies and gentlemen, consider what has occurred over the past four years, the culmination of which was the Capital storming on January 6th, a date that will live in infamy, and you will agree with me that this next four years is crucial to the destiny of this country. I have stated before the events this year that the 2020’s represent a shifting current, a turning into a possible new age, I impress that belief more sternly in this episode. Joe Biden, mediocre politician, but a man described by those who bought him off constantly as a man for the ordinary man; just an average Joe, as a slogan might have said in another era; has a horrifying choice ahead of him – be himself and invite history’s wrath, as both Hoover and Buchanan did; or inflict austerity and bring to fore the destiny of the Weimer Republic. Obviously there is a third way (snicker, third way, paging Bill Clinton) this Democrat can take but that would require him to truly live up to his “average Joe” manicure and let’s be real, do we really expect Joe Biden to invite the hatred from the ruling class as one former president did? No. But we can hope he doesn’t invite history’s wrath upon us or the end to this republic.

Extreme Weather: How Are The Kids Doing?

Feb. 21, 2021, 4:31 p.m.

Then Ecoshock gets the real dirt with soil strategist Didi Pershouse: poor soil, poor food = poor health for all of us.

interviews activist Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of Global Network

Feb. 21, 2021, 3:47 p.m.
Host Stuart Richardson interviews Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space and publisher of a blog called Organizing Notes. We speak about why Bath Iron Works ship yard (a shipbuilding yard in Maine that builds US Naval destroyers) needs to be converted into a plant that builds Green technology, how US military spending is out of control globally and how that steals from the American people. We speak about the new Biden administration and how social change happens, how we cannot sit on our hands and hope things change for the better.

Herman's Radio & Record Room #15

Feb. 21, 2021, 2:50 p.m.
My father Herman Frederick Moe was a radio engineer & TV repairman, a country & western "cowboy singer" and rustic guitar player. He performed in the late 1930’s on live radio before he enlisted in World War II as a radio-telephone technician. This show is my homage to him. My father loved the other side of radio as well – the listening side – it kept him company during many lonesome nights in the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s & 60's. From my imagination to your ears – it’s WHFM – vintage music from mid century America. This is music that I believe he would have enjoyed during that era.

No to Police Use of Military Weapons to Terrorize Black and Latinx Communities - Abolish the "1033 Program"

Feb. 21, 2021, 8:28 a.m.
No to Police Use of Military Weapons to Terrorize Black and Latinx Communities - Abolish the "1033 Program". James Baldwin captured the sense of subjugation and domination wrought by increasingly militarized police, decades ago when he wrote that a police officer moves through Harlem like an occupying soldier in an increasingly hostile country. Weapons of destruction are used to terrorize our people. Therefore we cannot accept band-aid solutions to institutionalized terror under the cover of law. Jaribu Hill. Jaribu Hill, Executive Director of the Mississippi Workers Center for Human Rights and Black Alliance for Peace.
