In Honor of Western Shoshone Elder Carrie Dann - She passed on January 2, 2021

Jan. 5, 2021, 10:16 p.m.
On January second, 2021 a message began traveling out from Crescent Valley, Nevada. Western Shoshone elder Carrie Dann had passed and joined her sister Mary in the Spirit World. For over 40 years the Dann Sisters were keeping Shoshone tradition and land rights alive against formidable opposition: Expanding gold mines, confiscation of their horses and cattle by armed federal agents and nuclear testing and waste storage. In honor and in memory of Carrie Dann I’m returning to recordings I made on Shoshone land. In June 2003 we came in support of the Danns against the recent violent armed raids by federal agents on their horses and cattle. The traditional Shoshone held council in a camp at the base of Mount Tenabo, the sacred mountain. The first speaker in this recording is Shoshone elder Corbin Harney. He is credited with having inspired the creation of the anti-nuclear Shundahai Network - and the last speaker you will hear is Carrie Dann.

Antisemitism: What It Is, and Is Not

Jan. 5, 2021, 7:03 p.m.
Today we focus on anti-Semitism, the Zionists definition of which has been broadened to include almost all criticism of Israel as well as support of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. The charge of anti-Semitism has been weaponized and is being used to squelch free speech on campuses as well as the wider community. This does a disservice not only to those are using legitimate, non violent actions to resist the Israeli occupation, but a disservice to the Jewish people who need energy to be put into opposing the rising tide of genuine antisemitism. Today we hear a discussion of this by author, journalist and teacher Peter Beinart, Barnard College Professor Nadia El-Haj, and Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi.

Castle Redmond + Maurice Plaines: Black Lives Still Matter

Jan. 5, 2021, 5:33 p.m.
While history books will largely remember 2020 as the year of a global pandemic, it was also the year that Americans began to truly embrace the Black Lives Matter movement. The murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor - and most recently the verdict in the shooting of Jacob Blake - brought about an outpouring of support in a year where there were only 18 days when police did not kill someone. We turn the page on 2020 on Sea Change Radio by revisiting two of our discussions about the black experience in this country. First, we hear from Castle Redmond, a managing director at the California Endowment as he talks about growing up Black in the Bay Area in the seventies. Then, a conversation with Maurice Plaines about the relationship between police and Black America.

Saving the people saves the economy: The Chinese experience

Jan. 4, 2021, 10:29 p.m.
The first responsibility of the People's Republic of China is to its people. That's why it reacted quickly to COVID-19, taking action that led to the near-elimination of the pandemic. There wasn't this nonsense talk we have here about "well, we have to fight the pandemic but we also need to keep the economy going." Saving the people saves the economy, and it didn't happen here. We don't have a People's Republic. We are now in the pathetic situation where the Canadian army is called in to address public health crises. We need a wall-to-wall array of medical services geared towards ordinary Canadians. Not for profits, not for private interests, but for the people. People like Linda McQuaig chronicled the shutdown and selloff of public medical assets long before the pandemic. The Canadian government should resign. But since it hasn't, the parties should unite to fight COVID. Not like the United States, which is a partisan contest between two incompetent parties. Canada needs popular mobilization on this issue, but the CLC is missing-inaction. Meanwhile, health-care workers bear the brunt of the pandemic.

Coming Out & Making It Real!

Jan. 4, 2021, 4:11 p.m.
On this week’s special show, a pair of selections from the marathon Global Queer Read-In we presented online last June (produced by Brian DeShazor with Rebecca Drapkin) that speak to the theme of “Coming Out & Making It Real”: Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sophie B. Hawkins performs her own “Not Beating Around The Bush” and reads a selection from “Mrs. Dalloway” by Virginia Woolf; and Broadway star, community activist and "Man of the World" Anthony Wayne performs a selection from “Men Of The House: A B-Boy Blues Novel” by James Earl Hardy! Elegant words of note to start the new year this week when you choose “This Way Out”: the world’s audio oasis for queer news and culture! (“NewsWrap” returns next week. Happy 2021!)

Episode 2020.0B.00-03. Beyond Election 2020, Some Extractions

Jan. 4, 2021, 2:27 a.m.
Class War Battlefield Podcast Episode 2020.0B.00 Has the Social Distortion Afflicting America Become to Advanced to Save The Country From It I recorded this in November, watching what has taken place since its recording, I find the clip included (featuring Chris Hedges) as prophetic and deeply troubling. When Lawrence Summers, whom Adam Tooze in his book Crashed suggested had learned from his previous Neoliberal mistakes; came out against $2,000 checks because he feared such a thing would “overheat the economy”, a phrase unfamiliar to those of us living in the actual economy – I knew the past was prophetic and Joe Biden would play the role Chris Hedges outlined in the second of the two clips I included from the 2018 podcast interview I clipped them from (the podcast title is FOR THE WORLD, the interview is stunningly relevant today considering it was recorded in 2018). More, this segment, which serves more as an introduction to the rest of the other segments, lays out a fear, that is built upon in 2020.0B.01, which I continue to have till this very day. Class War Battlefield Podcast Episode 2020.0B.01 This Fear I Have . . . .The Shadows Keep Running Across My Mind I found the beginning to the Amanpour and Company segment included at the podcasts start, shocking. “As the rest of the world waits for a formal transition to begin. . .” a statement uttered on November 11, 2020; my mind was jettisoned back to the 1990s where this statement would have been crooned by Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather or Peter Jennings in a segment covering the fits and starts of an immature or deteriorating political system in either South America, after a United States Coup or the former Soviet Republics after a Bankers coup. I had recorded this segment several times before believing it accurately reflected my thinking process behind what I keep calling “the shadows running across my mind”; having planned on publishing the segment during Thanksgiving, the addition of Masha Gessen’s interview confirmed my suspicion that time was needed to perfect its content. To the reader this is likely unimportant, but to me timing is everything, as I think Americans will soon see, we are in a time when presence is the key to overcoming the problems presented, those refusing to accept the way things are and how they become that way, will make turmoil, fragmentation and ultimately destructive tendency the norm; thus pushing America into a deep spiritual and cultural depression which may pull the nation apart permanently. Though this is a broader picture, as you will hear in the following segment, I have other more pressing concerns for today. Class War Battlefield Podcast Episode 2020.0B.02 The Fourth and Fifth Evils in American Society Turning to Dr. King’s Three Evils of Society speech, I thought about a fourth and fifth evil which should be explored and detailed. These Evils, might be more readily called maladies, have been part of America for its entire existence, so they won’t be alien or new to anyone who has had the mind to look deeply at American History for more than 5 years, though even a 5 year cursory look at American History, that being 2015-2020 would probably uncover these maladies also. Birtherism tops that list. But I digress, Dr. King’s Three Evils of Society was an introduction to what he saw as a shifting mission for SCLC, four months prior to delivering that speech he spoke about the original motto for his organization, “To Save the Soul of America” which says a lot about a man whom was to be the most hated person throughout the country because of the speech he used to explain that point. I marvel at his sacrifices during those years, I admire his courage and his honor; for this reason I offer this segment to anyone who cares about this country as much as he did. Class War Battlefield Podcast Episode 2020.0B.03 Voting, A Multi-Dimensional Act Voting, we are told, is a one-dimensional act. Walk into a booth, draw a level, or push a computerized button and walk away; but that is not what Voting actually is; there is a reason why people keep referring to an informed electorate, because without information, particularly truthful information, voting becomes an act without meaning. Just selecting ones favorite party or voting against another, has as much importance as picking a favorite sports team though the consequences in voting for one of the two corporate parties are far graver than selecting a sports team. In this segment I attempt to explain the many layers to voting, and why activists need to spend more time on explaining the connection between activism, voting and movement building. Rwandans Denied their Rights Because the West gave Kagame Immunity

Jan. 2, 2021, 11:30 p.m.
Regarding Paul Rusesabagina, Phil argues that the injustice of his arrest, rendition, and torture derives from the original failure of the USA, UK, and Canada to live up to the Arusha Accords, and to arrange for peace in Rwanda. Instead of peace, these countries backed a coup in Kigali in 1994 by the expatriate Tutsi invaders known as the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). Since 1994, the Rwandan people have been martyred to keep RPF leader Paul Kagame in power. Like Victoire Ingabire, Rusesabagina will not get justice in Rwanda. That's why supporters of justice should demand that Rusesabagina should be released from Rwanda and allowed to return to the USA or Belgium.

Herman's Radio & Record Room #12

Jan. 2, 2021, 12:15 p.m.
My dad Herman Frederick Moe was a radio engineer & TV repairman, a country & western "cowboy singer" and rustic guitar player. He performed in the late 1930’s on live radio before he enlisted in World War II as a radio-telephone technician. This show is my homage to him. My father loved the other side of radio as well – the listening side – it kept him company during many lonesome nights in the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s & 60's. From my imagination to your ears – it’s WHFM – vintage music from mid century America. This is music that I believe he would have enjoyed.
