Suzanne Simard with David Haskell - Finding the Mother Tree

June 8, 2021, 5:53 p.m.
A small bookstore in Point Reyes Station, a coastal town in West Marin, California, was the first to invite Suzanne Simard for a conversation. Three days earlier, on May 4, her book had been published. Finding the Mother Tree, Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest, has already become a best-seller. Suzanne Simard was born in the Monashee Mountains of British Columbia and grew up in an old growth forest. She was educated at the University of British Columbia and Oregon State University; and is now Professor of Forest Ecology in the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Forestry. Over 1,000 people participated on the Zoom book release hosted by David Haskell. He is professor of biology and environmental studies at the University of the South and author of The Forest Unseen and essays, op-eds, and poetry. Point Reyes Books called Suzanne Simard a pioneer of plant communication and intelligence; much like Rachel Carson. Simard, they say, writes in inspiring, and accessible ways, how trees, living side by side for hundreds of years, have evolved; how they perceive one another, learn and adapt their behaviors, recognize neighbors, and remember the past; how they have agency about the future; elicit warnings and mount defenses, cooperate and compete with one another with sophistication. All characteristics ascribed only to human intelligence, traits that are the essence of civil societies. And at the center of it all stand the Mother Trees: the mysterious, powerful forces that connect and sustain the others that surround them. The one hour film of the conversation is posted on Youtube The link can be found on the website of Point Reyes Books. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yRiN876lZw DATE: 2021/05/07

June 8, 2021, 3:22 p.m.
Yes, there will be millions of collective sighs as the deadliest pandemic in a century begins to abate and a more open summer kicks off. But summer also means the beginning of the wildfire season in the American West – a slew of deadly disasters lying in wait. Last year was the worst fire season in California’s recorded history and drought-like conditions portend another challenging summer. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to Professor Crystal Kolden of the University of California Merced, a wildfire expert and former firefighter. We talk about current preparations for impending fires, where she believes resources should be directed, and the ethical dilemma presented by California’s reliance on inmate firefighters.

Rev. William Barber "Beyond Palestine"; Reparations for Tulsa Race Massacre Survivors

June 8, 2021, 11:06 a.m.
Silence is Not an Option: Rev. William Barber draws connections between global systems of oppression from militarism to racism to classism and hammers home the importance of solidarity with Palestine with Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, co-chair of the Poor Peoples Campaign and president of Repairers of the Breach Says Rev. Barber, The Palestinian experience is one we can relate to through our own moral and spiritual experience. We have to address the displacement of native people wherever they are. Truth and justice cannot be found in narrow tribalism, within the lies of colonialism and white supremacy. So were Building Bridges to Palestine and as people who are descendants of Jewish holocaust survivors and the freedom fighters of the Warsaw ghetto we say there is nothing anti-Semitic about denouncing extreme ethnic nationalism. Rather it is a duty to stand with people to make state power responsible to all people and for equal rights and justice for the Palestinian people. ******************************** Viola Fletcher, 107-year old Tulsa Race Massacre survivor asks Congress for reparations, challenging America when will justice be served? I have never seen justice, said Tulsa Race Massacre survivor Viola Fletcher, a 107-year-old survivor of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre before a House committee on the need for the nation to make amends for the deadly attack on The Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma known as the Black Wall Street, a 35-block radius in the segregated community that was thriving with hundreds of businesses. But, on May 31 through June 1, 1921, the entire area was burned down as a white mob who attacked the community and burned down homes and businesses, killing hundreds of Black residents and injuring 800 others. America when will justice be served?

Ants On A Log

June 7, 2021, 12:13 p.m.
This week on The Childrens Hour we chat with Julie from Ants on a Log, a band that performs music for children and other childlike people that advocates for positivity, social justice, and silliness through song. This 2-person band consists of Julie and Anya from Philadelphia, PA. The two began writing together, finding driving harmonies and song topics that were silly, serious, environmental, feminist, gender-bending, and just plain fun. In their off-stage lives, Julie is a music therapist and Anya is an elementary science teacher. Their powers combined make for smart and socially conscious folk, a delight for children and adults of all ages. This week we discuss the importance of self-realization, and the freedom in being seen for who you are. Many of Ants on a Log songs challenge societal archetypes, such as girls have long hair and boys have short hair. We visit the topic of pronouns and how they are important and respectful of an individual. Ants even has a mix less on their website called Practice Your Pronouns. Julie also offers their experience using non-binary pronouns.
