ICKY: A Radio Musical

May 14, 2021, 9:45 a.m.
We've produced a musical! Way back in the days before the end of The Big Sick, students everywhere were forced to stare at computer screens featuring live video feeds of their classmates. This was happening in bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens across the country and the world. With the help (and the subconscious musings) of a dreamer named Halley, a team of super heroes discover that unity and togetherness can get them through any sicky situation. What started as a pandemic project for The Children's Hour Kids Crew turned into an epic musical, documenting this extraordinary moment in history from a child's point of view. Not only is the music set to infectious beats, the sound effects and scoring captivate children and adults alike. We hope that ICKY can be used to engage kids of all ages in conversation about the social and emotional toll of the year of the pandemic.

Professor Avi Loeb: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth

May 11, 2021, 6:16 p.m.
Harvard Professor Avi Loeb says that it is an artifact - many colleagues say it is just another comet or asteroid. Here is part of the ongoing and escalating controversy laid out in the Big Brains podcast from the University of Chicago from May 6, 2021. The full 34 minute conversation between Paul Rand and Professor Avi Loeb is on the University of Chicago website. Avi Loeb is a theoretical physicist who works on astrophysics and cosmology. He is former chair of the astronomy department at Harvard University and directs the Black Hole Initiative. He chairs the Advisory Committee for the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative and the Board on Physics and Astronomy of the National Academies. His recently published book is: Extraterrestrial, The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth - and the publisher says: Harvard’s top astronomer lays out his controversial theory that our solar system was recently visited by advanced alien technology from a distant star. It was discovered by the Pan-STARRS telescope in Maui, Hawaii, and given the name, ‘Oumuamua. The publication of the book: Extraterrestrial, sharpened the controversy - which, by the way, is welcomed by Avi Loeb. The public is fascinated and the book is already a best-seller. Academic support is rare and critics are becoming organized. Some of it plays out in scientific papers - but much more is now on the internet. The Big Brains podcast from the University of Chicago is so interesting because the host, Paul M. Rand is well informed in the science of it and engages in a conversation.

This past year has been trying for everyone, with the economically vulnerable particularly hard hit. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with the CEO of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, Nicole Taylor about this key California philanthropic organization. We learn how community foundations receive money from donors and distribute these funds to non-profits, discuss ways that the pandemic has changed philanthropy, and talk about how the murder of George Floyd and the ensuing trial of Derek Chauvin ignited a wave of giving to support racial justice.
