COVID-19 in Palestine, a double whammy

April 18, 2020, 9:01 a.m.
The Corona Virus pandemic dominates the world’s attention and the media’s focus. So it is also in Palestine. This week we will present an inside look into the effects of the virus in Palestine, and particularly in Bethlehem where COVID-19 has hit the hardest. Palestinians face the double whammy of fighting the pandemic, while resisting the occupation that brings the military and Illegal Jewish Settlers into their space. You are about to hear a recent Skype conversation between Abed Abusroar, founder and director of the Al Rowwad Cultural Center in the Aida Refugee Camp and Michael Spath, director of the Indiana Center for Middle East Peace in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Michael Spath begins the online conversation.

Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 170 Surprises

April 15, 2020, 8:35 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another 11 months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Michael Gurian - Let Boys Be Boys

April 15, 2020, 11:49 a.m.
The Wonder of Boys & A Fine Young Man Boys do not have an easy time growing up and maturing in our complex world these days. The same standard of behavior is frequently expected of boys and girls, often without recognizing the special and different needs of boys. Testosterone is a prime mover in the shaping of boys’ behavior resulting in their special and different needs. This is a two-part program from the archives of Radio Curious with Michael Gurian, the author of a 1997 book entitled, “The Wonder of Boys: What Parents, Mentors and Educators Can Do To Shape Boys Into Exceptional Men.” I spoke with Michael Gurian in January of 1998 from his home in Spokane, Washington. Michael Gurian recommends “Sex on the Brain,” by Deborah Blum & “Beyond the Birds and the Bees,” Beverly Engle. Originally Broadcast: January 23, 1998 & January 30, 1998

Fight the propaganda that alienates us

April 14, 2020, 6:52 p.m.
Experiencing a pandemic and an imperialist system in vertigo, workers can look to a poem by B. Brecht entitled, "In Praise of Learning." It repeatedly says, "You must take over the leadership." Phil emphasizes the need to fight the propaganda that tries to alienate us from countries that resist US hegemony. These countries, including Syria, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba and especially China, which has shown the way in fighting Covid-19, are drawing the wrath of frightened Western leaders.

The Muckraker: Jared Yates Sexton

April 14, 2020, 3:04 p.m.
As most of us have been cooped up doing our best to keep the pandemic at bay, the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. has decided that his job is to make daily TV appearances wherein he flouts science, deludes the public, brags about made-up accomplishments, and bullies members of the White House press pool who deign to ask him straightforward questions. It’s just another day in this truth-is-stranger-than-fiction reality we are all doing our darndest to get through. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with political analyst and author Jared Yates Sexton about a Republican Party that has chosen to be led by a malignant narcissist, a situation that has only gotten worse in the midst of an unprecedented global health crisis. We learn about what Yates refers to as the “Republican Death Cult,” discuss the effect this party has had on the climate movement, and get a glimpse of the struggle over universal access to the ballot box.

#632 -- Propaganda, Capitalism, Empire, Media (R)

April 12, 2020, 2:01 p.m.
Media scholar Mark Crispin Miller explores how the government--aided by the corporate media--molds public opinion through massive and unceasing campaigns of propaganda. This propaganda manufactures widespread public consent for imperialism, neoliberal economic policies, and military adventures abroad. In a brief introduction, KD analyzes the propaganda saturating a N.Y Times "news" article on Venezuela (March 13, 2019).
