host Sylvia Richardson interviewed on her new book

April 7, 2020, 12:38 p.m.
**Encore Show** Latin Waves host Sylvia Richardson is interviewed by the late Charles Boylan from Vancouver’s Co-op Radio, she speaks about her new book Fleshmapping, Cartography of Struggle, Renewal and Hope in Education Sylvia L. Richardson is a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University. She is the host and producer of the internationally syndicated radio program Latin Waves. A Brief Book synopsis What can be learned from a story woven out of fragmented moments of joy, pain, horror, and blissful awareness? Flesh Mapping is an attempt to create a pedagogy of shared narrative, place, and politics; to narratively map the injuries of the material, emotional, and spiritual impact of poverty, displacement, hunger and war on an individual life. The book is an invitation to instructors in education, anthropology, women’s studies, and labor studies to re-imagine education as the praxis for liberation, renewal, and hope. It serves as a process of naming the injuries inflicted on real bodies by privilege and power, like sites on a map. The goal is not simply to name and make visible privilege but to simultaneously create emergent spaces of dissonance in education that can challenge and transform power at the site where the personal is political.

The continuing politics of the Coronavirus

April 7, 2020, 9:34 a.m.
Phil continues his ongoing commentary about the politics of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is already a revisionist history underfoot, in which the United States is trying to blame China for not acting quickly enough to stem the Coronavirus, and for allegedly concealing information. Yet China reacted more quickly and thoroughly to the outbreak than did the United States, a fact recognized by many Western medical professionals. Phil reads the response of a Chinese Foreign Ministry press representative to a Bloomberg reporter, on how politicians and media figures in a country with a very questionable record of fighting the Coronavirus are promoting misinformation about China's disaster response. Incidentally, the U.S. government suppressed its own physicians from testing, reporting on and recording data about COVID-19 cases in the United States. Phil also discusses how the U.S. is taking advantage of the COVID-19 crisis to put additional pressure on Venezuela, and describes a curious incident involving the ramming of a Venezuelan coast guard vessel. He reads a statement by President Maduro about the need for international solidarity instead of sabotage during this difficult time. Meanwhile, in the U.S., 30 members of Congress including Bernie Sanders have issued a statement calling on the Trump administration to lift its sanctions against Iran. Boris Johnson has been hospitalized for Coronavirus. Phil discusses the exit of Corbyn's leadership from the Labour Party, referencing a recent article by George Galloway on why Corbyn's agenda was defeated.

Immigrant & migrant workers demand Corona aid & to stop ICE.

April 4, 2020, 4:45 p.m.
Immigrant and migrant workers call for financial assistance and to STOP the attacks on their human rights, which have actually stepped-up during this deadly pandemic! with Cal Soto, Director of and attorney for Workers Rights of the National Day Laborers Organizing Network (NDLON). Cal joined NDLON from LatinoJustice, where he launched the Rights Restoration Project and now partners with NDLON’s local worker leaders and labor centers using his legal training to add to the capacity and technical knowledge of grassroots movements to end wage theft, ensure worker safety, and increase job stability. Cal looks forward to the day when everyone can enjoy the fruits of their labor free from fear and exploitation. The stimulus package signed by Trump on Friday reflects the skewed priorities of his administration, which views migrant workers only as useful targets for him to scapegoat. By dehumanizing and excluding migrants, the legislation has failed to protect the lives of everyone living in the United States. There is no greater way to exacerbate today’s crisis then with ICE and CBP hell-bent on terrorizing communities, accelerating deportations, and increasing the detained population. Instead, funds and personnel should be reassigned and redeployed to CDC, FEMA, and other emergency needs says NDLON. The threat of coronavirus exposes the backward beliefs underpinning Trumpism at its core – medieval walls will not keep you safe, the US cannot survive on its own, and whether Trump likes it or not, we already live, breath, and eat off the same table. COVID-19 doesn’t care about what country you were born in, or how much you earn in a year. But it does make more clear the urgency of demands for worker and migrant justice – ignoring them now is pure folly. Cal Soto speaks to us about NDLON’s five-point Worker and Migrant Justice Response to Covid-19. In fact, the pandemic only makes more acute the need for comprehensive migrant justice, for the safety of our families, neighbors, and loved ones, immigrant and non-immigrant alike, local and national leaders must adopt a plan for Worker & Migrant Justice as part of the Coronavirus response. Undocumented workers are essential workers, and must be included in any coronavirus response.
