Chicago Protests Continue - Demand Community Control Over Policing

June 25, 2020, 9:23 p.m.
Protests following the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police continue in Chicago where the demand to end racist policing and CPD impunity for crimes committed under color of law is long standing. This recording of the first three speakers at a rally to pressure elected officials to listen to the people, took place out side Chicago's City Hall where the Mayor was holding a virtual Council meeting; one of the items to be submitted, the CPAC Ordinance, would historically change the power dynamics, enabling community control over how their community would be policed. A forty car caravan nosily circled city hall during the rally. Historic changes are under way that the mayor and some aldermen are trying to block. Chicago has a sordid history of unaccountable police protected by a corrupt system for which past and current elected public officials are responsible. I spoke briefly with a torture survivor who was framed at sixteen for murder and sentenced to natural life in prison. After 28 years his conviction was overturned in 2009 after his case was taken up by activists from CAARPR. He comments on a new community commission on police use of force that the Mayor has made him a part of, along with Arewa Winters whose great nephew, Pierre Loury, was killed by Chicago police. But more aldermen are feeling the heat. They are lifting ideas from CPAC to talk about the alternative ordinance, GAPA, that they and the Mayor have been trying to ram through as a solution to the policing crisis. But GAPA, for all its simulacra of reform, fails to transfer real power to the community to empower it to control the conditions of its own safety. Health clinics, good schools, resources for children and adults, access to wellness care and good housing and nutrition are what makes a community safer, not more cops with guns is the message that the Mayor, like minded aldermen and Chicago financial and real estate elites are refusing to hear.

Systemic racism, reparations and tax justice

June 25, 2020, 2:50 p.m.
We look at the United States and how tax justice can help address systemic racism. Plus: did you know Britain’s slave owners compensation loan was only settled by the government in 2015 on behalf of taxpayers? Faulkner wrote: “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” As we discuss, the legacy of centuries of institutionalised racism is that a wealth chasm has been created between black and white communities. We also know that the City of London in Britain built its wealth from slavery and empire. Still today, major finance sectors have extractive business models which impoverish some of the world’s poorest nations. And, financial secrecy is another form of empire. So how can we think about combining tax justice and reparations? Keval Bharadia‘s work on a super tax on the $8 trillion a day financial markets could help show the way. And all financial institutions must have independent slavery money audits. For those financial institutions now coming forward and offering what they’re calling reparations funds, how do we ensure that these funds are large, they’re targeted to the right places, and they’re ongoing? Featuring: Cortney Sanders and Michael Leachman of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities David Sorenson of the People’s Tax Page John Christensen of the Tax Justice Network Produced and hosted by Naomi Fowler of the Tax Justice Network

President Jimmy Carter - Life After the Presidency

June 24, 2020, 11:26 p.m.
The Virtues of Aging Considering the alternatives, growing older is really not all that bad. The frame of mind that we develop and carry with us as we age controls much of how we feel and behave. James Earl Carter Jr., more often known as Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the US, is the author of a book called, “The Virtues of Aging.” President Carter’s book covers issues from Social Security and medical expenses to the importance of staying active and involved. I spoke with President Jimmy Carter by phone, in the fall of 1998, and I asked him what prompted him to write the book. President Jimmy Carter recommends “The Age Wave: How the Most Important Trend of Our Time Can Change Your Future,” by Ken Dychtwald. Originally Broadcast: December 4, 1998

Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 180_Oklahoma

June 24, 2020, 10:04 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another 6 months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Putin calls for steps to preserve UN integrity and world peace

June 23, 2020, 8:38 p.m.
Putin recently authored a long article on the lessons of the 75th anniversary of the defeat of Nazism in WWII. He is calling for a meeting of leaders of the P5 countries, indicating that there is a serious problem affecting peace and stability in the world. He writes that the three wartime leaders of the Allied powers laid down a mechanism for the greater powers to maintain peace for 75 years. The veto of permanent members of the UN Security Council are the only reasonable alternative to a major conflict between great powers, who should seek compromises instead. Calls for eliminating veto powers would reduce the UN to the League of Nations irrelevancy. Moreover, Western media failed us completely on Putin's speech. This was an important essay by a major world figure calling for collective action at this critical moment.

Reclaiming Native American History: The Yuki of Thule Valley

June 23, 2020, 3:16 p.m.
The events of 2020, the toppling of statues and discoveries of hidden history reminded me of events in early 2000 - soon after I moved my radio production and micro power transmitter to Mendocino County. The State Historic Marker at the entrance to the Round Valley Indian Reservation in Northern CA read: “This valley was discovered by Frank M. Asbill arriving from Eden Valley, on May 15, 1854. During the same year, Charles Kelsey from Clear Lake also visited it, and George E White sighted it from Blue Nose” There is another account of the history of that day that is undisputed fact but forgotten. On May 15, 1854, the Yuki, inhabitants of the valley for over 12000 years, discovered six white men on their land. Led by Pierce Asbill the men opened fire and killed 40 of them. The Asbills returned a year later and captured 35 Yuki women and sold them as slaves to gold miners. In the Spring of 2000 an effort was begun to rewrite the language on the Marker and officially re-cast the bronze plaque. TUC Radio joined the groups in the Fall of 2000, just in time for the first public meeting at the American Legion Hall in Round Valley. Descendants of the original Yuki people had come as well as Wylaki whose great grandparent had been force marched to the valley by the cavalry. This is a moving collection of authentic voices - much spoken from the heart. All have the ambience of their circumstances, the echo of the Legion Hall, a speaker hiding from the microphone, hesitating to be heard. Kitchen noises from the North Fork Cafe. Ranchers leaning against the back wall remarking that the Indians had crossed the line. But on March 21, 2002, California Registered Historical Landmark No. 674 was replaced with this: “The first inhabitants of Round Valley were the Yuki who resided here for thousands of years in harmony with their natural surroundings. In 1854, European settlers entered the valley. In 1856, conflicts between settlers and Yuki escalated and to protect local tribes the entire watershed was designated a reservation. Additional tribes were subsequently forced on the property: Nomlacki, Wylaki, Lassik, Sinkyone, Pomo (including Cahto, Kabeyo, Shodakai, Yokayo, Shokawa, Shanel, Kashaya, and Habenapo among others), Wappo, Concow Maidu, Colusa, and Achumawi. In 1864, the government reduced the reservation by four-fifths, to its current size.” And even this improvement leaves more opportunities for the future.
