Joan Jacobs Brumberg - An Intimate History of American Girls

March 11, 2020, 8:31 a.m.
The Body Project: An Intimate History of American Girls Advertising has had a major effect on how we view our bodies and on our individual self-image. The history of how this advertising has come to affect American girls as they pass through menarche and adolescence is presented in a book called “The Body Project: An Intimate History of American Girls.” This book describes the historical roots of acute societal and psychological pressures that girls feel today. It shows how the female adolescent experience has changed since 1895. The author, Joan Jacobs Brumberg, is a Professor of History and Women’s Studies at Cornell University in New York. In this two-part program, I spoke Professor Brumberg in October of 1997 and asked her what drew her to write “The Body Project.” Joan Jacobs Brumberg recommends “Learning to Bow,” by Bruce Feiler & “The Grass Link,” by May Vinchi. Originally Broadcast: October 14, 1997 & October 21, 1997

Dr. John Campbell: Corona Virus - What we need to know now

March 10, 2020, 10:29 p.m.
In the first week of March 2020, as the world was trying to understand the new Corona Virus, this extraordinary conversation was posted in the weekly line-up of Radio Ecoshock. My fellow broadcaster and friend Alex Smith reached Dr. John Campbell in Britain and asked him about the medical science and epidemiology of the Corona virus. Dr. Campbell is a retired Nurse Teacher and A and E nurse based in England. He also does some teaching in Asia and Africa. He publishes daily on Youtube under Campbellteaching. These videos help students learn the background to all forms of health care. He currently posts on the spread of the Corona virus. A film posted yesterday had 1/4 million views in 24 hours. Alex Smith gave me permission to broadcast excerpts from this information packed one hour radio program from ecoshock. Smith is the founder and host of Radio Ecoshock, 14 years on the air. Syndicated to around 100 mostly public radio stations Radio Ecoshock has become a vital information link to the latest climate science.

Now is the time to emulate Bethune

March 10, 2020, 7:18 p.m.
Phil Taylor and Norman Otis Richmond talk about the great Canadian figure, Norman Bethune. In this time of Coronavirus panic, it is important to remember the selflessness and co-operation that Bethune promoted. Bethune is possibly the most popular Canadian in the entire world. There was even an opera performed about him in 2005 in Toronto. Not only did he help advance the state of medicine, and support revolutionary struggles, but Bethune also prefigured Canada's system of socialized medicine. All countries can have a similar system, but the U.S. will first have to abandon notions of its own exceptionalism in that regard.

Then we discuss the latest developments in the electric vehicle space, examine the phenomenon that is Tesla, and talk about ways that car-owners may reduce their carbon footprints.

International Women's Day

March 10, 2020, 8:51 a.m.
Sunday March 8 2020 was International Women’s Day, originally founded as International Working Women’s Day by Clara Zetkin and other women in the international socialist movement in 1910. International Women’s Day 2020 was ground-breaking and radical in its own right, particularly in Latin America, where millions upon millions of women to the streets in cities across the region to protest against growing inequality, rising rates of femicide and anti-women violence, as well as reactionary laws against abortion. In Chile alone, two million women marched in the capital Santiago as part of ongoing protests against the right-wing neo-liberal regime of Sebastian Pinera, whose crackdown on dissent has involved numerous assaults and sexual crimes against women protesters. Several Women’s Day demonstrations were the targets of police violence on Sunday, including in France and Turkey. Women across the entire world are fighting back bravely against the patriarchal systems imposed upon them and are refusing to be silent; fighting for a world where their rights, their equality, their dignity are non-negotiable. Just as is the case with the Wet’suwet’en solidarity protests, women are leading the way all over the world in the struggle for liberation.
