Sonic Cafe #167/The International Show

Dec. 27, 2019, 10:46 a.m.
Sonic Café, that’s Peter Schilling with Major Tom, which of course you already know if you speak German that is. So welcome to another hour of headphone friendly music, comedy and pop culture, I’m your host Scott Clark and this is episode 167. This time the Sonic Café goes international, as we present a music mix from all over the world. Listen for Jean-Louis Murat, Caetano Veloso, Deep Forest, the Reminiscence Quartet, Patricia Kaas and more. We like foreign language music because it gives us the opportunity to perceive the vocal quality as another melodic voice in the band, giving the entire song a distinctively instrumental quality. We’ll also check in with comedian Jim Gaffigan. Jim’s been doing some international travel and he’s here to share his travel stories. All that plus starship captain, Jean-Luc Picard and comedian Eddie Izzard discuss how the cunning use of flags has shaped our world’s history. So dust off your passport, pack your suitcase and join us as the Sonic Café goes international from our little corner of the world, here in the Pacific Northwest, we’re the Sonic Café.

Criminalizing Dissent: UMassAmherst Autumn Conference (part 1)

Dec. 26, 2019, 7:09 p.m.
On November 12, 2019, Umass Amherst held its second blockbuster pro-Palestinian conference of the year taking on the Zionists lobby’s attempt to censor speech on American campuses. We hear Umass Professor Sut Jhally, organizer of the event, followed by Linda Sarsour, moderator, and Omar Barghouty, co-founder of the BDS campaign (via Skype). A capacity crowd was present, despite condemnation by university officials and right-wing pro-Israel pressure groups. The panel addressed mounting efforts by U.S. political leaders, right-wing lobbying groups, and college and university administrators to silence pro-Palestinian speech on American campuses and to criminalize support for BDS. Come back next week for three more distinguished speakers at this remarkable conference.

Donald Drumpf Theatre Vol. 154 He Is Impeached

Dec. 25, 2019, 9:08 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another 10 episodes, but with impeachment cancellation is possible at any moment. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

The Ramez Naam Plan For De-Carbonization, Pt. 1 (re-broadcast)

Dec. 24, 2019, 3:10 p.m.
Whether or not we use the name Green New Deal to describe a set of aggressive long-term policies that will help humanity in the fight against climate change, most rational people agree that the status quo is completely unacceptable. The potential of a Green New Deal is that it could pave the way for some great minds to devise concrete proposals for reducing greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with one of those great minds, Ramez Naam, a futurist and technologist who’s crafted his own sort of Green New Deal. We delve into the nuts and bolts of Naam’s proposal and the problems it’s trying to solve, as he makes the case for why we may actually see bipartisan support for such a proposal.

Michael Parenti: Theocracy VS. Democracy - ARCHIVE

Dec. 24, 2019, 2:44 p.m.
Michael Parenti says that democracy can't survive under religious rule – whatever that religion may be. Parenti's warning in this archival recording is as timely and urgently expressed as it was when this speech was first given on April 12, 1987, during the second term of the Reagan administration. This talk is also very funny. Parenti explains how God may be considered as a "founding father" and why Woody Allen calls him an underachiever. It is easy to extend this timeless analysis to the present circumstances. With roots in a working class Italian district of New York City and a Ph.D. in political science from Yale Michael Parenti has become an internationally known writer and lecturer. He is the author of twenty-three books.

Thomas Sankara: The Upright Man

Dec. 23, 2019, 10:09 p.m.
Tonight's show shall focus on a true hero that I wish far more people knew about. If he was still with us today, he would have turned 69 on December 21st. As you’ll see, Thomas Sankara’s example as a revolutionary who fought against colonialism, imperialism, capitalism and racism remains absolutely relevant today, and contains lessons for us all as to what liberation means and what is necessary to achieve it in a world that remains dominated by an exploitative and unjust system that keeps billions of people under its boot heel.

Chemical weapons story springs leaks, Canadian media bury the story.

Dec. 23, 2019, 9:46 p.m.
Phil asks Yves Engler, author of the article "Media ignores explosive revelations about chemical weapons in Syria," why the mainstream media in Canada has completely ignored the collapsing official narrative that the Syrian government was responsible for an alleged chemical incident at Douma, Syria, April 7 2018. Phil notes that Justin Trudeau at first called for an investigation to assign blame for the incident. Chrystia Freeland, however, immediately pinned the blame on Syria and Trudeau soon followed suit. Over 100 cruise missiles were launched at Syria on April 14, 2018 before any investigation took place. Engler explains that the Canadian government has recently contributed monetarily to the OPCW, just as it gives voluntary contributions to the OAS and the UN Human Rights Council. These organizations are corrupted by these sizeable donations. Tareq Haddad resigned from Newsweek because it refused to cover the whistleblower revelations from the OPCW over its questionable report on Douma. Engler notes that in journalism school, students are taught to seek the truth. In practice, however, Canadian journalists of foreign affairs very quickly learn to parrot the media releases of Global Affairs Canada. Engler also reveals that the Canadian government funds Halal Systems, an early warning system designed to protect the US Coalition's proxy warriors in Syria from air attack, such as in Idlib. Vanessa Beely, he says, shows the White Helmets are the main operators of Halal Systems.

#616 -- The Matrix: A Further Exploration, Part 2

Dec. 22, 2019, 1 p.m.
Part 2 of an intriguing audio tapestry woven by Robin Upton from Unwelcome Guests' archival material. It's a fine exploration of how the forces that run the world *actually* operate in practice. And an exploration of the propaganda they generate to pacify and mislead the people. Central to this tapestry is Richard K. Moore's fine essay, "Escaping the Matrix," read by Lyn Gerry. Woven around that are several other discussions that supplement, extend, and illustrate the essay's several points.
