#582 -- James G. Anderson on Climate Change, Part 1 (R)

April 27, 2019, 9:12 a.m.
Thoughtful and interesting interview with Harvard climate scientist James G. Anderson. This week, Anderson lucidly explains why "global warming" is a bad term to use (it understates the problem's scope and severity). He makes short work of the claim that climate change is natural, not man-made. And he has interesting things to say about the ozone layer ... the Kyoto Protocol ... and why electricity is the best fuel, not only for transportation but for heating too. Plus a song by David Rovics.

Growing Nuclear Risks in a Changing World: New Thinking and Movement Building

April 27, 2019, 6:44 a.m.
Growing Nuclear Risks in a Changing World: New Thinking and Movement Building with Joseph Gerson who serves as AFSCs disarmament coordinator, as director of programs in New England, and as director of the Peace and Economic Security Program. Joseph plays a leading role in building collaborations among U.S., Asian, and European peace and nuclear weapons abolition movements. His program work focuses on challenging and overcoming U.S. global hegemony, including its preparations for and threats to initiate nuclear war and its military domination of the Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. He is also the author of the renowned Empire and the Bomb. We're now in the post-post Cold War era, an interregnum marked by major geopolitical changes, uncertainty, and an unrestrained nuclear arms race. In the wake of the collapse of the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty (Trump was first to pull the plug,) and the U.S., Russia and China on the brink of a dangerous unrestrained nuclear arms race, Joseph Gerson analyzes the growing nuclear dangers and plans to reverse the arms race and to come back from the brink. Gerson also discusses how leading peace advocates from across the U.S. Russia, Europe and Asia, as well as with leaders of the Movement for Black Lives and U.S. Labor Against the War, are coming together to provide a way for our peace and justice movements to develop new popular movement approaches to help prevent war and to promote justice and democracy.

The Taxcast: March 2019

April 25, 2019, 5:36 p.m.
This month we discuss misleading reporting from the mainstream media on the financial crisis: it was overloaded with finance 'experts', fed us all sorts of misunderstandings about the financial crash, sold us the austerity narrative and omitted alternative solutions. Plus: two huge court case tax and social justice wins - firstly, an unprecedented case in Kenya by Tax Justice Network Africa against the tax haven of Mauritius. Secondly, a US court has ruled that international financial institutions like the IMF and the World Bank CAN be sued when their development projects hurt communities. And we're happy to report that the EU Commission WILL now investigate one of the cases exposed by the #LuxLeaks whistleblowers...

Phantasms of Freedom, Part 12

April 25, 2019, 9:28 a.m.
How well do we know the history of our nation? As for our Founders, what is fact? What is myth? While we have been told we are free, we face an increasing onslaught of laws, edicts, and proclamations governing our lives as American citizens. We have been told that “we need to get our Constitution back.” Do we truly need to do that? We are, during every election cycle, given a “choice.” But is it a real choice? Or a Hobson’s choice? Were our Founders the godlike, towering figures we were taught? Were they above reproach? Or were they human beings, subject to the same avarice, temptations and lust we all are? What were their motivations in starting this country? Were they benign in nature, inspired to offer their fellow countrymen “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?” Or were there other instincts at play? Was the Constitution truly designed to be the bulwark of freedom? Why were the Articles of Confederation jettisoned? Who were the Anti-Federalists? Why did they get such short shrift by history? What was the worth of the Founders? Were they Everymen? Or rich elites? The answers, when explored from an “unofficial” vantage point, may surprise you. Listen along as Eric the Blacksmith discusses American history with Al Aric and Theo. Current events are interspersed. Explore the nooks and crannies of suppressed information as the book “Hologram of Liberty” by Kenneth Royce is reviewed and its bibliography examined.
