Dan Austin: 88Bikes
Aug. 13, 2019, 7:43 p.m.
A generation ago, the dream of owning a bicycle was one shared by a vast number of American kids. While the explosion of competitors like video games and iPhones may have somewhat tempered that youthful enthusiasm for bikes in this country, there are still millions of children in developing nations who can only begin to imagine having their very own bicycle. This weekâs guest on Sea Change Radio, Dan Austin, is in the business of fulfilling those dreams for kids from Belgrade to Calcutta. He talks about his philanthropic nonprofit 88Bikes, the problem his organization is trying to solve and the unique way it puts donors directly in touch with recipients. Then, we dig into the Sea Change Radio archives to discuss ways to tackle homelessness in this country with San Francisco City Supervisor Rafael Mandelman.
Raptors and the NBA Sports-Wash Tyrant Kagame
Aug. 13, 2019, 7:29 p.m.
Many scratch their heads trying to understand why the management of the NBA champion Toronto Raptors are zealously working to promote their association with President Paul Kagame of Rwanda. Those people are forgetting that the billionaire owners of America's sports monopolies are cheek-by-jowl with the US military and naturally do what they can to further the interests of the empire.

To that, Dr. Wayne Roberts add a âwhole of economy,â a âwhole of foodâ and a âwhole of policyâ as well as a âwhole of human personalityâ perspective. All together, they become a whole new way of thinking about the role of food in the city.

Daniel Ellsberg - The Doomsday Machine - (ONE of TWO)
Aug. 13, 2019, 2:29 p.m.
The international journalist Robert Fisk wrote in the British Independent in August 2019 that we should have paid more attention to the anniversaries of Hiroshima and Nagasaki since India, Pakistan, Israel, Iran and the US are currently - quote - âRattling the Nuclear Cageâ â and Donald Trump has just pulled out of the Cold War Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russia.
When this program was broadcast first in early 2018 Donald Trumpâs serial threats of destruction on North Korea had also heightened the risk of nuclear war - and the Seattle anti nuclear movement invited Daniel Ellsberg for an on stage discussion about nuclear winter, staggering death tolls and how terrifyingly easy it is to set off such a war.
Ellsberg had just been able to publish his most recent book: The Doomsday Machine, Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner. He had been unable to find a publisher.
In 1961 Ellsberg consulted for the Department of Defense and the White House and drafted Secretary Robert McNamaraâs plans for nuclear war. He discovered then that the authority to initiate use of nuclear weapons had been widely delegated. If the secret plans for general nuclear war under Eisenhower had been executed, Ellsberg wrote, they would have caused the near-extinction of humanity. He now says that US nuclear strategy has not fundamentally changed since the eras of late Eisenhower and early Kennedy.
Ellsberg says that the legacy of this most dangerous arms buildup in the history of civilization--and its proposed renewal under the Trump administration--threatens our survival. The US is now planning on spending $1-1.6 trillion on nuclear weapons in the next 30 years.
Ellsberg spoke at Town Hall in Seattle on January 9, 2018. He was recorded by Mike McCormick of Talking Stick TV

Episode 2019.03. American's Domestic Terrorists Become Obvious to the Media
Aug. 12, 2019, 10:46 p.m.
What is the legal definition of terrorism? If you look through the United States Codes, you find the answer to that question. If youâd like to clarify the answer, by limiting the definition to domestic terrorism, the answer youâll receive is less encouraging. The United States codes do not distinguish the difference between domestic and international terrorism, in fact U.S law doesnât define domestic terrorism at all, leaving any inquirers to draw conclusions from their thorough definition of international terrorism. This is a topic I cover in todayâs episode, alongside looking at the devastating fear that is mounting throughout this country. A fear that is creating negative psychic energy, which if allowed to fester, will result in a devastating explosion of violence.
Trade is War: The West's War Against the World
Aug. 12, 2019, 9:42 p.m.
Political economist Yash Tandon discusses the growing fissures and fractures in the U.S.-dominated global economy. The U.S. increasingly relies on coercive measures, such as sanctions, trade wars, and abuse of "intellectual property rights" to maintain its pre-eminence.
Yet it's still on its way out. China's economic rise is providing a counterweight to America's 'New World Order,' especially for Africans. NATO's imperial overreach in Libya provided a wake-up call to African leaders. The countries of the Global South are coming to recognize the need to unite, despite differences, and resist the economic diktat of U.S./European imperialism.

Welcome Home Move Political Prisoners Janet Africa & Janine Africa
Aug. 10, 2019, 8:14 a.m.
Ona Move - we welcome home Janet Africa & Janine Africa, after 41 years, and wont rest until all our political prisoners are free at last!
with
. sheros Janet Africa & Janine Africa, finally returned to the beloved community, after 41 years of incarceration, for a death that actually resulted from a police campaign of terror used against Black community organizations
. Carlos Africa, Move organizer
. Pam Africa, Move organizer and commentary by Mumia Abu-Jamal, a political prisoner who remains imprisoned for life without parole and continues his work as a journalist from his jail cell in Pennsylvania. Prior to his wrongful conviction in 1981 Jamal was a political activist and President of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists.
Though many of us can name Mumia as our hero, there are far too many of us who have no idea who he is and what he has contributed to human history. It is a product of the states attempted eradication of all liberation movements fighting against U.S. imperialism, particularly those led by people of color, and assuredly those movements within its own borders. Such is the case with Mumia and his comrade members of the Move organization.
Janet and Janine Africa were falsely accused in the death of PO James Ramp along with 7 other of their organizations members. The MOVE 9 were innocent men and women who were imprisoned in August 1978, following a massive police attack on their communal home in the Powelton Village neighborhood of Philadelphia. This was 7 years before the government, continuing campaign of terror against the group dropped an incendiary bomb on MOVE, killing 11 people, including 5 babies.
It has been 41 years of unjust of imprisonment for Janet Africa & Janine Africa, but despite the hardship of being separated from family members, despite the grief over the murder of family members they remained strong, with an uncompromising commitment to their beliefs, despite all that this government has done to break them and ultimately try to eliminate the MOVE Organization. Now, Janet Africa and Janine Africa finally released from prison, due to the efforts of pressure groups across the globe are back in the beloved community. And, they recount how these mostly Black, freedom and nature loving activists of MOVE, who lived in Philadelphia in the early 1970s to early 80s"until the Philadelphia police department dropped an incendiary bomb on their house from a helicopter on May 13, 1985, killing 11 members of the organization, including 5 children and silencing their central figure, John Africa and burning down more than 60 other houses. Theyll remind us how the MOVE family members, clawed their way out of the inferno, only to be beaten back by police gunfire. The Philadelphia Police and Fire departments let the blaze continue for hours as the 11 people all perished.
They will talk about how they survived 41 years behind the walls and continuing to mobilize the massive amount of public pressure to force this government to release the remainder of the MOVE 9 and Mumia Abu-Jamal and to free all political prisoners "What can YOU do to add to the pressure?
