Canada is America's Assistant Coup-Maker
July 2, 2019, 9:28 p.m.
Trudeau-Freeland wax on about "rule of law," "our values," and "promoting democracy." But the evidence shows that Canadian foreign policy parallels the US, and works diligently to keep anyone in power so long as they carry out policies that benefit bankers and corporations. Witness Honduras, Venezuela, and Haiti.
Jane Anne Morris - Democracy Theme Park
July 2, 2019, 7:24 p.m.
Jane Anne Morris was one of the primary researchers, writers and workshop leaders in POCLAD the Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy. They came together in the early 1990's to try to better understand why all of our activism against corporations that are causing harm to people and nature was so ineffective.
Â
The website Democracy Theme Park dot org is Jane Anne Morrisâ precious gift to us. She died on May 28, 2019 in Madison, Wisconsin. And this program is a tribute to her. Here is the way she wanted us to enter her site. She wrote:
âI first brought up the idea of the Democracy Theme Park â the place where we play at pulling the levers of democracy, only to discover they arenât connected to anything â at a conference in Texas in 1996 ⦠Corporate executives have continued writing laws and buying television stations. Theyâre making policy, while weâre standing in line for rides at the Democracy Theme Park.
But we donât have to stay here. We too can develop provocative and nuanced strategies for returning democracy to what it was supposed to be all about; government for the people, by the people. So hang on to your hats and sharpen your pencils⦠weâre going over the wall! But first, take a step back to 1996. What I said then is still (alas) deeply relevant.â
Jane Anne Morris was recorded by C-SPAN in 1996 in Texas at the founding convention of the Alliance for Democracy. This is the first of several programs honoring her. Please contact me, Maria Gilardin, via <tuc@tucradio.org> if you have broadcast quality audio of Jane Anne Morris that I may use.
Dr. Donald Perry - A Ride Through a Rain Forest in Costa Rica
July 2, 2019, 4:43 p.m.
Life Above the Jungle Floor
In the middle of the Costa Rican rain forest, about an hour west of San Jose, Costa Rica, on the east side of the continental divide, you can find the Rain Forest Aerial Tram located on a private rain forest reserve. Itâs a series of small, open-air cars that hold about five people each held together by a three kilometers long cable. The tramcars carry visitors through, above and below this portion of the Central American rainforest canopy. The Rain Forest Aerial Tram was the brainchild of Dr. Donald Perry, a biologist trained at the University of California at Los Angeles, who, beginning in 1970, has specialized in the study of the flora and fauna of the Central American Rainforest. In April of 1995, I visited the Rain Forest Aerial Tram with Dr. Perry.
Dr. Donald Perry recommends âLife Above the Jungle Floor,â by Dr. David Perry.

The Ominous Parallels - 11
July 2, 2019, 12:09 p.m.
The global depression pushes Germany over the edge.
Economic catastrophe was, in effect, the last link in a long chain of ideas and events and a catalyst which gave Hitler a real opportunity for the final cashing in. The catalyst worked because the nation was already ripe for Hitlerâs kind of cashing in. If a man long-addicted to a toxic drug suffers sudden convulsions and then dies from, then one might validly say that the convulsions were the cause of the death so long as one remembers the cause of the cause. The same is true about a country addicted to a toxic ideology.
After years of preaching contradictions and evading principles with an anti-ideological shrug, theseâthe civilized--men were astonished to see the nation conclude that man cannot live by principles, that reason is no guide to action, and that anything goes.
These men were astonished to see hostile gangs take to the streets and demand one anotherâs sacrifice.
These men were astonished to find that irrational feeling is no counter to wild emotionalism.
After years of spreading or condoning or subsidizing the cult and culture of nihilism, these men were astonished to find they had nothing more to say and that there was no one left to listen.
The moderates were helpless. The authorities were helpless. The killers were taking over.

PurpleAir Founder Adrian Dybwad (re-broadcast)
July 2, 2019, 6:21 a.m.
Northern Californiaâs now infamous Camp Fire was not only the largest, longest, and deadliest wildfire in the stateâs history, it also produced record amounts of smoke. Schools closed, there was a run on protective masks, and people were fashioning do-it-yourself air purifiers because there were none left in stores. And it looks like we will only see an acceleration of wildfires in the future. This grim forecast has brought a surge in traffic to websites that monitor air quality like AirNow, Weather Underground, and PurpleAir. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with the founder and CEO of PurpleAir, a company that sells laser air quality sensors for home use at a reasonable price, and posts all the results in real-time on its site. We discuss PurpleAirâs business model, its unique brand of crowd-sourcing technology, and examine the ways that it casts the world in a different, and sometimes frightening, light.
Grant Smith on Israel's clandestine nuclear program
July 1, 2019, 8:58 p.m.
Our feature presentation today is a talk delivered to this years annual conference of the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs in Washington DC delivered by Grant Smith of the Institute for Research for Middle East Policy. He is a frequent contributor to the Al Jazeera News Service, speaking on Israelâs clandestine nuclear program, which to this day it continues to absurdly claim, does not exist. And of course because Israel wants to continue this charade of non existence, we go along with it, another illustration of Israelâs gross manipulation of the United States and the EU.
It's a classic example of a "secret" that everybody knows: Israel has nukes, but officially denies it. Each year, the Zionist lobby demands and gets a pledge of silence by every US official from the president on down.
Also in today's show:
No player has dared to impede Israel's plan to steal and annex ever more occupied territory.
Under pressure from the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a public school in Skokie, Illinois has cancelled the âTeaching Palestineâ course offered for teachers in the Niles Township High School District 219.

#591 -- American Oppression, American Resistance
June 30, 2019, 6:53 p.m.
A fine talk (technically an interview) by NOAM CHOMSKY, recorded in his office on November 20, 2012. This is the talk's first broadcast on New World Notes.
Chomsky brilliantly explores three questions highly relevant to today:
(1) In a free society such as the US, by what means do the rulers control the common people?
(2) How do protest movements today compare with those of the 1960s?
(3) What issues are most pressing for today's generation of activists?
