Danny Sjursen: Exposes Liberal Hypocrisy, Foreign Policy Failures

Jan. 9, 2019, 1:08 p.m.
Today I spoke with US Army Major Danny Sjursen about two of his most recent articles for TomDispatch and republished on other sites that deal with one of the most critical problems facing the country today; that in their intense hatred of President Trump, the liberals of the Democratic party and the media that supports it have abandoned all semblance of critical thinking and have far outdistanced the Republican hawks in their support for Washington’s enduring wars, a position that has historical antecedents on the issues of war and peace that are unflattering to the party. The articles and their links: “The ‘Adults’ in the Room Are the Problem.” https://www.thenation.com/article/the-adults-in-the-room-are-the-problem/ and “Hypocrisy Without Bounds: The Tragedy of Liberal Foreign Policy,” published online on January 8: https://original.antiwar.com/danny_sjursen/2019/01/07/hypocrisy-without-bounds-the-tragedy-of-liberal-foreign-policy/ “If anyone else were president,” he writes and elaborates, “the ‘liberals’ would be celebrating. After all, pulling American soldiers out of a couple of failing, endless wars seems like a ‘win’ for progressives,” and he goes on from there to demonstrate the current apparently limitless hypocrisy of the Democrats which can spell defeat for them in 2020 if they don’t get their heads on straight and push into the shadows, the onetime “baby boomers” like Joe Biden who can only spell disaster for the party if chosen as their candidate. Sjursen expresses his astonishment at the ease in which individuals on the liberal left who would ordinarily be expected to be against America’s unjust wars, embrace the generals who have encouraged and led them as “the adults in the room” who they have been counting on to restrain President Trump from doing something crazy which, in this instance, appears to be withdrawing US troops from Syria and Afghanistan. After listening to Sjursen and reading his articles which I consider a MUST, one must ask, “Who are the crazy ones?

Jeff Blankfort:News/Op:Senate v. BDS, China & Israel, Bolton

Jan. 9, 2019, 1:02 p.m.
I begin today’s program by referring to the first bill introduced in the new Senate session by Marco Rubio, S. 1, which includes a number of items benefiting Israel, his being the Combatting BDS Act that would make it illegal and subject to fine any US business that refuses to do business with Israel, being more or less similar to anti BDS laws that have been passed in 26 states. Because of the government shutdown, the Democrats, even those who will support the bill, have vowed not to vote on anything until the government re-opens. I then mention how Palestinian American congresswoman, Rashida Tlaib, is being called anti-Semitic by the Jewish political establishment for suggesting that the senators supporting the bill should study the US constitution which was construed by said Jews as an accusation of “dual loyalty.” She had said no such thing, but that was clearly the case, assuming they had any loyalty to the US in the first place. What has not been mentioned in the media is that the bill would also make into law the $38 billion arms gift to Israel that was approved by Obama in 2016. Such codifying would make it difficult if not impossible for any other president over the next decade to tamper with it. I suggest this is desired by Israel so it won’t be penalized by Washington for its actions in the international arena which the White House wouldn’t find pleasing. One example of that is a deal that has been made with Israel and a Chinese company whose major owner is the Chinese government to take over and run the port of Haifa for 25 years, beginning in 2021. The US Navy which has routinely used the port to dock and participate in joint exercises with the Israeli navy is not pleased with the deal. The story has only been reported in the Israeli press which also noted that John Bolton had raised the issue with Netanyahu. I then go into some aspects of Bolton’s background establishing him, quite openly, as an Israeli agent. From there I go to a quote from Mike Pompeo on US goals for Iran, democratic freedoms, then point out that this year will mark the 65th anniversary of the CIA organized coup against Iran’s democratically government and point out it was more devastating for Iran than Pearl Harbor or 911 were for the US. Finally, I report that the US government shutdown might halt funding of the Palestinian Authority’s security forces that collaborate with Israel and the unintentional pitfall of the Anti-Terrorism Clarification Act that was passed last Fall by voice vote in both houses which would allow US citizens to sue any entity that receives aid from the US if one of its members harms a US citizen. The USG is trying to find a way to change it to keep the PA from continuing its collaboration with Israel.

Catherine Homsey: Conscious Shopping

Jan. 9, 2019, 8:15 a.m.
The average US resident heads out to the grocery store 1.6 times a week, and over the course of a year uses well over 1,000 plastic shopping bags there - bags which, on average, are used for a mere 15 minutes but will stick around on the earth for hundreds of years. This week’s guest on Sea Change Radio, Catherine Homsey, is fed up with the status quo and has changed her food shopping habits to better reflect her values. She gives us insight into the plastic habit of food retailers, talks about what to do about it, and tells us of her particular annoyance with Trader Joe’s, the popular grocer that was once her favorite.

Cato, Letter No. 3

Jan. 9, 2019, 7:07 a.m.
Letter No. 3 is Cato's message to his countrymen and women that the Constitution would make the Colonies homogenous. He alludes to the recent Shays' Rebellion in Massachusetts. Cato contrasts the climate, temperaments and motivations of the Northern and Southern states. Cato likens the psychology of the citizenry to an example of basic physics. Cato makes the argument that the young Confederation is far too vast to be ruled by a centralized authority, and that the people's independence will be now threatened even more than during the recent revolution.

Ray McGovern - RussiaGate: The Absence of Evidence? (Part ONE of TWO)

Jan. 8, 2019, 6:19 p.m.
The material for this program literally landed on my doorstep with a personal challenge - would TUC radio and you who have listened over time be open to hearing arguments that there is no evidence that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections? Given the speaker, former CIA analyst Ray McGovern, who I met and recorded before, beginning with the opposition to the war on Iraq; and given the expertise of the group of colleagues around him, the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, VIPS; and given that this group expressed their doubts about Russian interference already in December of 2016; and given that no major TV or print media have given them a voice - I picked up the challenge and am giving Ray McGovern and his colleagues this space and time and hope that you might find his arguments and evidence as intriguing as I did. Ray McGovern served as a CIA analyst for 27 years, from the administration of John F. Kennedy to that of George H. W. Bush. His duties included chairing National Intelligence Estimates and preparing the President’s Daily Brief to Ronald Reagan’s security advisers from 1981 to 1985. In January 2003, McGovern co-created Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) to expose how intelligence was being falsified to “justify” war on Iraq. VIPS remains active to this day. McGovern was recorded on August 4, 2018 at the Common Good Cafe in Seattle, WA. Thanks to KODX-LP FM radio for the recording.

A Fightback is Growing Against GM Plant Closings in US and Canada

Jan. 8, 2019, 5:39 p.m.
GM announced plant closings in the US and Canada this past December. Autoworkers on both sides of the border and their wider communities responded with anger and organized protest. In this New Year, real plans are emerging from the affected plants and their affiliates. Slogans such as, "Seize the Plant, Save the Planet" and "Make Detroit/Oshawa the engine for a green new deal." The companies have taken drastic, callous steps to protect their profits. Now it is time for workers to think big and take dramatic steps to protect their jobs and improve their wages and conditions. Electric cars, perhaps?

Your Life is Their Toy - Part 17

Jan. 8, 2019, 1:58 p.m.
Health and life are man's most precious possessions; and anxiety to preserve them is natural. It is not surprising, therefore, that they have been exploited since time immemorial. Every age has had its charlatans, quacks and medicine men. Much in the same measure as social organization has attained its highest pitch in the present era, the exploitation of health and life today has reached its zenith. Never before in history has there arisen such an extensive conspiracy about the problem of public health of entire nations, involving well-organized, opposing political and commercial groups. The consequence of this welter of exploitation is the sacrifice of human comfort, happiness, health and life. --Emanuel Josephson, 1941, "Your Life is Their Toy."

The US War on China's Economic Model

Jan. 7, 2019, 7:52 p.m.
The United States, a much-vaunted imperial power and economic powerhouse, can't take the heat: it can't compete with China's advances in technology and industry. So what to do? Hobble and obstruct is the new plan, and the ultimate step is military intimidation, even war. Of course, as Stephen reminds us, the United States always falsified its own 'free-market' success story by hiding the fact the public has paid all the bills for research and development, while turning over the benefits to private companies (who reap the profits). What is looming into view is the superior development model of China, which shares the benefits.

Josh Ruebner and Lamis Deek on the Trump administration's efforts to repress the Palestinian people

Jan. 7, 2019, 3:36 p.m.
Josh Ruebner, Policy Director at the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, is followed by Lamis Deek, Palestinian civil rights attorney in New York City. We see this repression in a myriad number of forms. For example, Trump's cutoff of the U.S. share of UNWRA funding; ending bilateral "humanitarian" assistance from AID; closure of the PLO office in Washington DC; transfer of the U.S. Embassy from TelAviv to Jerusalem; and the dissolution of the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem. Ruebner explains why this last slam may be the most significant of all. Ms. Deek expresses her admiration of the Palestinian protesters at the Gaza apartheid fence. They continue protesting in spite of a continuous rain of death-dealing US-made dumdum bullets, all approved by the Trump administration. But first: Having failed to pass its unconstitutional anti-BDS legislation in the open, the Israel Lobby and its allies in Congress are conniving surreptitiously to have it added to the must-pass congressional omnibus spending bill, where it will get no debate. [Post-show note: it appears that this "must-pass" bill, whether poisoned this way or not, did NOT pass when it "must," thus triggering Trump's notorious government shutdown.] The ACLU has seen an updated version being considered for inclusion in the spending bill. While Capitol Hill offices claim the First Amendment concerns have been resolved, this is nonsense. Knowingly supporting BDS could result in criminal financial penalties of up to $1 million. Were this legislation to pass and survive review by the new Supreme Court, federal officials would have yet another new weapon at their disposal to chill and punish activity supporting the rights of Palestinians.
