If Music Could Talk - Dec 2 2018
Dec. 6, 2018, 2:13 p.m.
Camilo Mejia - Exposing the Failed Soft Coup Agents in Nicaragua
Dec. 6, 2018, 1:48 p.m.
Over the past five months western corporate news reports about Nicaragua have painted a harrowing picture about the country historically known for a revolutionary legacy that has put it at odds with US foreign policy and money interests.
The U.S. has made full use of its global propaganda machine and "regime" change apparatus not only to create chaos and instability there, but also to politically and diplomatically isolate it from the rest of the world.
Camilo Mejia supported the student opposition protests against the Ortega government until he noticed a similarity in the news reports with coverage of events in Syria; a narrative that was used to justify US intervention on "humanitarian" grounds. He speaks of what his research revealed, enhanced by his military training, when he looked into video pro-porting to show that the Sandinista government was killing student protesters. He offers back ground to events that were clearly misreported by western news media to discredit the government and bring protesters to the streets. He also address the split in Nicaraguan society along class interests and values, and the confusion over former Sandinista officials, vocal and well funded opposition figures, who claim to represent the values of the revolution and the "new generation", yet call for U.S. intervention to bring down the Ortega government in conjunction with a reactionary Catholic Church, right wing oligarchs, business executives and US funded NGOs, who today perform tasks openly that the CIA once did clandestinely.
He speaks about the documented long term goal of the US ruling class government to destroy the Sandinista movement and speaks to why a poor nation, one with free health care, education, and a popular market economy that has enabled food sovereignty, is a threat to the U.S. neoliberal model imposed on most of the world.
Stan Smith, Chicago ALBA Solidarity, does the introduction.
Sonic Cafe #115/Flashback To The 1980's
Dec. 6, 2018, 11:40 a.m.
Sonic Café. Look out cause weâre on another trip through time in the Sonic Café time machine. It may look like a rusty old phone booth, but our time machine the real deal. Iâm Scott Clark, inviting you to flashback to the 1980âs to witness the dawn of MTV. A time when big hair and parachute pants were a thing, and women needed to wear leg warmers and shoulder pads for some reason. Weâve lined up a mix of wall to wall eighties hits including the Buggles, with Video Killed the Radio Star. A tune that has the unique distinction of being the very first music video ever played on MTV. How about that? Plus 80s music from the J. Geils Band, Billy Idol, the Go Goâs, the Romantics, Bow Wow Wow and many more. Then later weâll hear directly the gipper himself⦠in a riff from a Reagan open mic gaffe created by the Talking Heads Jerry Harrison He called We Begin Bombing in Five Minutes. A comment that shook the world for a moment back in 1984, I know because I lived it. And finally, the Sonic Café presents comedian Dana Carvey, as he channels Reagan in a bit he calls the Reagan Oracle. All that and of course more just ahead on episode 115 of the Sonic Café⦠so strap into your DeLorean, adjust your skinny tie and join us, as we flashback to the nineteen 1980s at that little café in the Pacific Northwest. Weâre the Sonic Café.

Out of the Woods - Show #453 - 12-15-18
Dec. 6, 2018, 5:01 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length.
Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

GM Plant Closing. Don't Let the Companies Have All the Say.
Dec. 5, 2018, 8:44 p.m.
When GM dropped the mic on Oshawa, saying the big plant would be closed, the real face of capitalist power was on display. The workers, their union, and the community, tens of thousands of people, were put on their mettle. The popular desire that this not happen ran into the rock of remote private power: democracy collides with capital. GM workers did walk out of the plant spontaneously. The old order has to be challenged, as is happening in France and Mexico.

Your Life is Their Toy - Part 15
Dec. 5, 2018, 4:47 p.m.
Summary: Health and life are man's most precious possessions; and anxiety to preserve them is natural. It is not surprising, therefore, that they have been exploited since time immemorial. Every age has had its charlatans, quacks and medicine men.
Much in the same measure as social organization has attained its highest pitch in the present era, the exploitation of health and life today has reached its zenith. Never before in history has there arisen such an extensive conspiracy about the problem of public health of entire nations, involving well-organized, opposing political and commercial groups.
The consequence of this welter of exploitation is the sacrifice of human comfort, happiness, health and life.

Asian Art Museum — The Dragon's Gift - Sacred Arts of Bhutan
Dec. 4, 2018, 8:17 p.m.
In this edition of Radio Curious we would like to take you to the country of Bhutan, East of Mount Everest and bordered by India and Tibet. Bhutan is a mystical kingdom considered by many as The Last Shangri-La. We visit "The Dragonâs Gift: The Sacred Arts of Bhutan," an exhibit which was displayed at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, California, in the spring of 2009.
We start in conversation with Therese Bartholomew, the curator of the exhibit who helps us to understand what inspired the exhibit and the trials and tribulations of transporting such valuable religious objects from monasteries at the top of Bhutanese mountains to the city of San Francisco.
We will also visit the exhibit itself and hear some of the ceremonies, meet the monks who have travelled with the exhibit and tour the museum docent Henny Tanugjaja.
Therese Bartholomew is the Curator Emeritus of Himalayan Arts at the Asian Art Museum San Francisco the book she recommends is âMy Life and Lives, The Story of a Tibetan Incarnationâ by Rato Khyongla Nawang Losang. We visited with Therese Bartholomew from her home in San Francisco on the March 27, 2009 and began by asking her what makes Bhutan and Bhutanese arts so special?
