The Balfour Legacy Conference's Panel on Intersectionality

We continue our 5-show coverage of the Balfour Legacy Conference held in Cambridge, Massachusetts on November 11th, 2017, today featuring an extraordinary panel on intersectionality…the relationship of all human rights struggles with each other and the power of that recognition. The first to speak on the panel is Matowin Monroe, co leader of the American Indians of New England. She is also lead organizer for the Indigenous Peoples Day which works to get communities to recognize Indigenous People’s Day in lieu of Columbus Day, as was done by Cambridge in 2016. Matowin is followed by Gabriel Camacho whose parents emigrated from Mexico in the 1990’s. Gabe has served on the boards of a myriad of Latin organizations, and currently is the Immigration Programs Coordinator for the American Friends Service Committee. The next panelist to speak is Carl Williams, currently a staff attorney with the ACLU of Massachusetts, and former defense attorney for the Roxbury Defenders. He is active with the National Lawyers Guild, and is a Lecturer at the Northeastern Law School. The final speaker is Nadia Ben-Youssef, a lawyer and human rights activist and the first US representative for Adalah, the legal center for Arab minority rights located in Haifa, Israel. She is now developing Adalah’s US advocacy strategy to shape American discourse and influence US policy and practice in Palestine/Israel.

The Supreme Court Doesn't Have to Overturn Roe to Decimate Abortion Rights with Talcott Camp, ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project Now that Pres. Trump has nominated Brett Kavanaugh to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court, it will be up to the Senate to fully vet him so that the American people can determine whether he will uphold the basic civil rights and liberties relied on by everyone in this country. This is particularly true when it comes to abortion rights, where Kavanaugh's prior opinions on the subject, coupled with the fact that Donald Trump vowed to only nominate justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade, give rise to serious concern about womens continued ability to access abortion if Kavanaugh is confirmed. A new Supreme Court Justice could effectively decimate womens access to abortion, even without overturning Roe outright. Overturning Roe would be catastrophic, but it is not the only scenario in which politicians would be able to shut down abortion care. The court can give them back the power to do so by simply upholding whatever obstacles they throw in a woman's path.

Balfour, Israel and Palestine (first panel in the conference on Balfour Consequences)

Today we offer another of our five shows devoted to covering the conference "Balfour’s Legacy: Confronting the Consequences," held on November 11, 2017 at the First Parish Church in Cambridge MA. This conference commemorates the 100th anniversary of the so-called Balfour Declaration, a 67-word letter in 1917 signed by the openly racist and antisemitic Lord Arthur Balfour, then Britain's Foreign Secretary. It's credited with setting in motion the creation of the state of Israel on Palestinian land, without consulting Palestinians. This time we are presenting the first of three panels, with the title "Balfour, Israel and Palestine." The three speakers and their subjects are as follows: Lawrence Davidson (West Chester University) Balfour and the Zionist Project Susan Akram (Boston University School of Law) Balfour and International Law Thomas Suárez (Author, "State of Terror: How Terrorism Created Modern Israel") The Role of Terror in the State-Building Process This panel was facilitated by Hilary Rantisi of the Middle East Initiative at Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
