Back in 1999, a team of scientists published a graphic depiction reconstructing northern hemisphere temperatures for the previous 1000 years. The steep increase from the 1900s on inspired the scientific community to give this visual a clever nickname: the hockey stick graph. This week on Sea Change Radio, we sit down with Michael Mann, the lead researcher on that study that introduced a generation to the notion of climate change. He is widely published and has received a number of awards, the most recent being the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement in April of 2019. In our conversation, we talk about why academics should bust out of the ivory tower, examine the climate change denial movement, and explore how the adage, "the best defense is a strong offense," has served him well.
Alex Carey: Corporations and Propaganda, Part TWO of TWO

Journalist John Pilger has called Carey "a second Orwell in his prophesies". This segment covers the little known role of the US Chamber of Commerce in the McCarthy witch hunts of post WWII. Carey also shows how the continued campaign against "Big Government" plays an important role in bringing Reagan to power. Also mentioned the famous secret memo by Lewis Powell, later Supreme Court Justice, that set in motion what Bill Moyers today calls "the revolt of the rich."

Alex Carey said that the people of the US have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining democracy and destroying the unions. Careyâs unique view of US history goes back to World War I and ends with the Reagan era.

Our feature presentation today is a recorded forum held during Apartheid Week at Harvard University. It features Cornel West, Dimi Khalidi, and Marc Lamont Hill. It begins with introductions by the moderator, Jamila Huessein.
But first, we begin with words out of Gaza, where that imprisoned population just celebrated the one year anniversary of the Great March of Return. It was highly recognized throughout the international community, which is why the Israeli hasbara [i.e. propaganda factory] felt compelled to push back. Their response was critiqued by one of Gazaâs most authentic voices, that of Professor Haidar Eid in the following statement that he wrote in Mondoweiss [excerpted here]:
âWith the first anniversary of the Great March of Return, some disturbing questions have risen. Similar questions were raised in 2009, 2012, and 2014; in fact, this has been happening since 1948. It is becoming even more disturbing now to hear the same arguments being made by some of us who have internalized their subjugation by repeating the Israeli hasbara regarding our responsibility for our own death at the fence of the Gaza concentration camp! Victims blaming victims for their own death at the hands of Israeli snipers stationed on the other side of the eastern fence. Golda Meir, who unashamedly said that she would never forgive Palestinians for making Israeli soldiers kill them, wouldâve been so delighted.
"[Also] to Israelâs delight, we are being told by certain sectors that Hamas is behind the Great March of Return. That Hamas has been inciting people, who happen to be ignorant and passive, [etc etc] ...."

Phil interviews Rabbi David Mivasair of Hamilton, ON, just released after being arrested by Israeli soldiers near Hebron in the West Bank of Palestine.
The Rabbi says it was a "win-win situation." If the Palestinian and Jewish volunteers from the Centre for Jewish Non-Violence were arrested, they would be interviewed by the world's media. If not, they would get to repair an essential road linking some isolated Palestinian villages.

Israeli Colonialism & the Occupied Palestinian Territories...Past, Present, and Future

Amria Hass spoke about the similarities of the United States and Israel; both are colonial settler States that practiced ethnic cleansing while Israel has yet to achieve the genocide of its
native population that occurred in the United States. There are lots of similarities she sees when visiting the United States.
Hass is the daughter of two Holocaust survivors who preferred to return to their homes in Europe following The Second World War only to find that Nazi antisemitism had infected their communities. They went to Israel as the best of no choice as a place to restart their lives. Both her parents were Communist who did not ascribe to the racist white supremacist values that motivated the core of Zionist leadership and the Israelis in the new State who came to dominate it's politics; always maneuvering with the intent to take all of Palestine, displacing as many Arabs as possible. She recounts a story of her father's shame of witnessing the common place looting of Palestinian fields. We are all in the same boat she said. Her journalism is her effort to not be a passive bystander to the violence that she is aware of committed against Palestinians, as her mother once recounted, German housewives stood, watching with casual indifference, when she was off loaded from a freight car into the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
The questions were off mic and difficult to hear due to the echo of the room. I have included snippets but her answers provide the gist. At least one person was upset that Amira Hass did not go far enough in condemning Israeli crimes which she responds to. Hass ended her talk with her concerned that the people advocating for war in Israel or the region will use that war, as they have done in the past, to attempt further mass expulsions of Palestinians, which we here must focus our efforts on preventing.
