On Israel's 1948 freezing and theft of all Palestinians' bank assets

Palestinian scholar Sreemati Mitter has done an enormous amount of research on the freezing of Arab Palestinian bank accounts by Israel following its declaration of Independence, and she is writing a book about it. She gave this talk in Washington DC, where she was introduced by Yusef Munayyer.
Israel not only drove Arab Palestinians off their land and took their homes, it also froze their money, and took it. Sreemati tells the riveting story of how they fought this outrage. They were defeated at turn after turn, until a Jordanian attorney finally found an uncorrupted court venue. He sued and won 50 lawsuits there, at which point Israel finally agreed to pay back ... but couldn't do so now because it had "already spent" the funds it had grabbed! Listen to learn how the victims eventually got their money, plus a bit of interest.

On this week's Global Research News Hour, on the occasion of the recent passing and funeral of the 41st president of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush, we present a portrait of Bush's background and criminal activities, largely missing from current discourse over the late president's legacy. Guests include Florida based freelance journalist John Buchanan, who, in 2003, revealed for the first time archival documents proving the financial connections between Bush's father Prescott and a key supporter of the Nazi war machine during WWII.

Over the past five months western corporate news reports about Nicaragua have painted a harrowing picture about the country historically known for a revolutionary legacy that has put it at odds with US foreign policy and money interests.
The U.S. has made full use of its global propaganda machine and "regime" change apparatus not only to create chaos and instability there, but also to politically and diplomatically isolate it from the rest of the world.
Camilo Mejia supported the student opposition protests against the Ortega government until he noticed a similarity in the news reports with coverage of events in Syria; a narrative that was used to justify US intervention on "humanitarian" grounds. He speaks of what his research revealed, enhanced by his military training, when he looked into video pro-porting to show that the Sandinista government was killing student protesters.He offers back ground to events that were clearly misreported by western news media to discredit the government and bring protesters to the streets. He also address the split in Nicaraguan society along class interests and values, and the confusion over former Sandinista officials, vocal and well funded opposition figures, who claim to represent the values of the revolution and the "new generation", yet call for U.S. intervention to bring down the Ortega government in conjunction with a reactionary Catholic Church, right wing oligarchs, business executives and US funded NGOs, who today perform tasks openly that the CIA once did clandestinely.
He speaks about the documented long term goal of the US ruling class government to destroy the Sandinista movement and speaks to why a poor nation, one with free health care, education, and a popular market economy that has enabled food sovereignty, is a threat to the U.S. neoliberal model imposed on most of the world.

Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s.
