Zero Mass Water: A New Source for H2O
Dec. 28, 2017, 10:43 a.m.
In our household we do our best to avoid buying bottled water - we're keenly aware of what those darn plastic bottles are doing to the environment. Instead, we just drink our tap water - it's safe and delicious, because we live in San Francisco, and our water is sourced from the magnificent Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. But not everyone in the United States can rely on their tap water to be safe. The horrifying reports of lead-tainted water in Flint, Michigan and other locations across the United States are a stark reminder of the inadequacy of local water infrastructure. What alternative do communities like that have? Our guest today on Sea Change Radio believes he has an answer. Zero Mass Water CEO and founder, Cody Friesen has launched a product called Source which uses special solar panels called hydropanels to transform humidity in the air into enough drinking water for most families to live comfortably. Friesen describes how his company's technology works (even in arid climates), how much it costs, and what it could mean for populations who rely too heavily on bottled water.

The Balfour Legacy Conference's Panel on Intersectionality
Dec. 27, 2017, 8:21 p.m.
We finally wrap up our coverage of the Balfour Legacy Conference held in Cambridge, Massachusetts on November 11th, 2017, today featuring an extraordinary panel on intersectionalityâ¦the relationship of all human rights struggles with each other and the power of that recognition.
The first to speak on the panel is Matowin Monroe, co leader of the American Indians of New England. She is also lead organizer for the Indigenous Peoples Day which works to get communities to recognize Indigenous Peopleâs Day in lieu of Columbus Day, as was done by Cambridge in 2016.
Matowin is followed by Gabriel Camacho whose parents emigrated from Mexico in the 1990âs. Gabe has served on the boards of a myriad of Latin organizations, and currently is the Immigration Programs Coordinator for the American Friends Service Committee.
The next panelist to speak is Carl Williams, currently a staff attorney with the ACLU of Massachusetts, and former defense attorney for the Roxbury Defenders. He is active with the National Lawyers Guild, and is a Lecturer at the Northeastern Law School.
The final speaker is Nadia Ben-Youssef, a lawyer and human rights activist and the first US representative for Adalah, the legal center for Arab minority rights located in Haifa, Israel. She is now developing Adalahâs US advocacy strategy to shape American discourse and influence US policy and practice in Palestine/Israel.
This is the FIFTH of five consecutive shows covering the conference "Balfourâs Legacy: Confronting the Consequences," held on November 11th at the First Parish Church in Cambridge MA.

@TheAngryindian ignores the annual distractions of the silly season to look at the widespread penetration of irrational ideas and beliefs into the authoritative information sphere and how this has led western politics, the United States in particular, in increasingly bizarre without much complaint from the elected and economic leadership; the intelligentsia or, the general public that is affected by their decisions.

George Monbiot: Altruism For An Age Of Crisis (re-broadcast)
Dec. 26, 2017, 6:28 p.m.
When you think of the values emblematic of politics in the Occident, does the term "altruism" come to mind? Probably not lately. Our guest today on Sea Change Radio believes that a participatory culture with altruism at its core will be key to digging ourselves out of the mess that is our current political climate. This week we are speaking with one of the world's leading environmental voices, George Monbiot. Acclaimed author, journalist, and activist, Monbiot talks to host Alex Wise about his latest book, "Out Of The Wreckage: A New Politics In The Age Of Crisis." He discusses what he sees as lessons from the 2016 U.S. presidential election, why a growth-orientation on both right and left are incompatible with sustainability, and how we can infuse more altruism into our culture and politics.
Restoring a Forest with Fire and Love - Dennis Martinez
Dec. 26, 2017, 4:19 p.m.
The 2017 California fires were the largest in State history. How did the management of the California forests and wild lands contribute to the inferno?
When Spanish Conquistadors rode up the West Coast they were astonished to see that they entered forests that looked like parks with widely spaced trees. Church and military records show that in the early 19th century Californiaâs forests were carefully tended. The catastrophic wildfires of today were extremely rare. California Natives used controlled fires to create these parks that in turn provided food and shelter to them and thousands of animals.
Dennis Martinez talks about Indian forest practice and restoration. He has worked for over 50 years in eco-cultural restoration specializing in tribal lands and cultural issues.
Few people still hold that precious knowledge of how Native forests were managed. Dennis Martinez is one of them. He is of O'odham/Chicano heritage, and helps traditional communities with the restoration of ancestral lands. He is well loved writer and lecturer. He is a seed collector, vegetation surveyor, restoration tree thinner and ethno-botanist.
I interviewed him in the late 1990s when I was visiting Western States in an RV with a studio and even a micro-power radio station on board. This is the rebroadcast of the archived program.
This program is dedicated to those affected by the 2017 California fires and anybody who wishes to make this a new beginning.
