The West Virginia Wildcat Strike of 2018 - Olivia Morris

April 3, 2018, 8:25 p.m.
West Virginia teacher and grassroots strike leader, Olivia Morris, talks about the historic 9 day wildcat strike that lasted from February 22 to March 7, 2018. She is in conversation with Stacy Davis Gates, political director for the Chicago Teachers Union. This is a personal, very candid conversation about a strike in an anti union right to work state, about alliances between teachers and public workers, a broken down health care system, how low or no taxes for coal and gas extraction diminish the money needed for education and more. The Chicago Teachers Union described the event this way: "The wildcat strike by West Virginia teachers, among the lowest paid teachers in the nation, has ignited public support across the state and the nation, with teachers in states from Oklahoma to Kentucky looking at strategies to bring the West Virginia model of strike resistance and rank and file democracy to their states." "In West Virginia, teachers rejected efforts by political leaders and top union officials to convince them to settle without an iron clad guarantee of improved wages, enshrined in legislation, not just for them but for all state public employees. Teachers struck for those guarantees even though West Virginia is a 'right-to work' state which bans strikes by public workers." The wildcat strike derailed plans by state legislators to jack up health insurance premiums in the Public Employee Insurance Agency (PEIA) and to jam through a charter school bill being promoted by corporations.... Teachers and their supporters are demanding West Virginia legislators reverse corporate tax cuts, raise gas severance tax and hold harmless any public programs that prioritize the needs of struggling state residents in any plan to fund their raises."

Lisa Song: Mississippi Levee Wars

April 3, 2018, 5:59 p.m.
Sometimes we lose sight of what Audrey Hepburn called "that old-fashioned idea that others come first and you come second." This week on Sea Change Radio, we hear from ProPublica reporter Lisa Song who has done some recent reporting on a little known problem that could have very big effects: the impact of illegal overbuilding of levee systems in the Midwestern flood-prone regions of the Mississippi River. The folks responsible are flouting the rules and lobbying to have them changed. Their argument is that they're just trying to protect the communities they represent, but the effect is to make other communities far more vulnerable to flood. The valuable reporting that Song and her colleagues are doing to expose the issue will hopefully help to arm future flood victims against the rising tide of these  water district bullies.

After Trials At UN Court, 11 Former Prisoners (some acquitted, others freed after time served) Are Unable to Rejoin Their Families.

April 3, 2018, 1:17 p.m.
A lawyers' organization involved with UN established courts is asking why the UN does nothing to help released prisoners to return to their families. The countries who turned over these individuals to the UNICTR do not take them back. All the problems, says Jacobs, are traceable to the fact of demonization of the accused, and the non-presumption of innocence by those who established the court.

Dan Kovalik: US Double Standard on Colombia vs Venezuela

April 1, 2018, 9:14 p.m.
Following the Cuban revolution the US Government under Kennedy developed a program of "State Terror" to deal with the aspirations of peasants and workers in Latin America whose needs could only be answered by ending exploitation by US corporations and the local feudal landlord class. Set up under the guise of National Security it was first fully implemented by the US Army in Colombia. Kovalik compairs the news coverage of Colombia and Venezuela. They are neighboring countries that receive extremely different treatment by the US Empire and the mass media. While Colombia is known for one of the worst human rights records in the world (killing priests, trade unionists, indigenous, journalists the poor) it remains a top recipient of US military aid and enjoys uncritical press coverage in Western media--all while Trump imposes sanctions and threatens military intervention against Venezuela over unsubstantiated allegations. #526 -- How 'The System' Causes Addiction (R)

April 1, 2018, 8:32 p.m.
A good introduction to Dr. Gabor Mate's insights into addiction. Mate (mah-TAY) shows that addiction is caused not by chemical substances but by the complex interaction of brain, experience, the environment (including society & the economy), and chemical substances. Our stressful, exploitative economic system is a major factor causing addiction. And since The System's "War on Drugs" does little good and much harm, could its REAL goals be more sinister than its professed goals?
