Interviews author/Educator Dr Robert Jensen
July 22, 2017, 12:22 p.m.
âââââRobert Jensen, professor in the School of Journalism at The University of Texas at Austin College of Communication, is the author of Arguing for Our Lives: A User s Guide to Constructive Dialog, (City Lights Publishers, March 2013).
The book explores issues with public discourse, trust in the leadership of elected officials and what Jensen calls an Age of Anxiety. It also offers strategies for addressing these crises.
We live in a time when public discourse is more skewed than ever by the propaganda that big money can buy, with trust in the leadership of elected officials at an all-time low. The news has degenerated into sensationalist sound bites, and the idea of debate has become a polarized shouting match that precludes any meaningful discussion. It s also a time of anxiety, as we re faced with economic and ecological crises on a global scale, with stakes that seem higher than ever before. In times like these, it s essential that we be able to think and communicate clearly.
Sylvia speaks to Dr Jensen about traditional struggles, internal domination and a way forward.

Whats Happening in South Sudan; Indian Autoworkers Given Life Sentences for Protests
July 22, 2017, 11:15 a.m.
Whats Happening in South Sudan and the Role of the United States?
with
Ugandan-native activist Milton Allimadi, publisher of Black Star News and an adjunct professor at John Jay College
Prof. Allimadi examines the background of the ongoing conflict in South Sudan, which has created untold suffering, tens of thousands of deaths and over a million displaced people who have been forced out of their homes. Violence is escalating in South Sudan, and famine has been declared in parts of South Sudan. As of 2016 estimates of victims of the war in South Sudan had already exceeded 100,000 and thousands more have been killed since that time. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) most recently reported 1,559,815 refugees since December 2013. Prof. Allimadi talks about what underlies the conflict and what is the role of the U.S. and the U.N? The U.S. is the primary financial supporter of the government in South Sudan.
Prof. Allimadi places a large part of the responsibility on Gen. Yoweri Museveni, who is the current dictator of neighboring Uganda, who seeks regional hegemony and has sent forces and military aid in support of Salva Kiir. Uganda, he noted, is a major ally of the United States and often does its bidding in regional conflicts. Military aid to Uganda, funded by U.S. tax dollars, has been used against the civilians in South Sudan. Allimadi said Americans can play a critical role in ending the massacres since the U.S. provides $750 million annually to the Museveni regime.
Prof. Allimadi has started a petition to Antnio Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations. For more details on the petition go to Black Star News

Indian Trade Unions Plead for World-Wide Support to Free 13 Autoworkers Sentenced to Life In Prison After Protesting Plant Conditions
Thirteen former workers of the countrys biggest car maker, Maruti Suzuki, in Northern Indian have been sentenced to life imprisonment because of their activism protesting the conditions at the companys Manesar plant in 2012. Four other former workers have been sentenced to a five-year jail term. The prosecution had sought capital punishment for the accused.
The workers were falsely accused in the death of a plant manager nearly five years ago, following a dispute between workers and management at the factory. In fact, the workers assert the general manager of the factory was killed by hired musclemen of the Maruti Suzuki management meant to create the ground for crushing the workers union. Despite in no way being responsible for the incident, the workers have been convicted on the basis of concocted evidence manufactured by the state administration, police and employer nexus in a shameless abuse of power. More than 546 regular and 2000 contract workers were thrown out of their jobs and 148 workers were sent to jail for up to four and half years.
Indias trade unions are calling upon workers to organize demonstrations in their workplaces or the industrial centers on April 4 and 5, 2017 as a mark of solidarity with the Maruti workers struggling for justice and for trade union rights. They are demanding unconditional release of the Maruti workers and reinstatement of the victimized workers.
Does Capitalism Have a Future?
July 21, 2017, 6:45 p.m.
In the U.S., political-economic institutions are defined by an emerging crisis. Stagnant to weak economic growth characterizes the modern economy. Wall Streetâs rise to power has meant the financialization and destabilization of the economy, along with the attendance of mass distrust of corporate America. Ecological crisis threatens corporate capitalism more than any other force. Mass distrust also extends to business dominated political institutions. And yet, despite the rising distrust of societal institutions, numerous hurdles have prevented the articulation and development of viable alternatives to the status quo.
Dr. Anthony DiMaggio will examines sources of the growing crisis of confidence toward US institutions, and explore why a serious discussion of revolutionary politics has failed to materialize. He will discuss the major forces impeding social transformation, including the decline of public education and organized labor, which have been responsible for the deterioration of leftist politics and left public intellectualism. Paul Hellyer on Stopping CETA and the need for a New Social Contract
July 21, 2017, 8:49 a.m.
As part of its 2017 Summer Series, the Global Research News Hour presents a speech by the Honourable Paul Hellyer, from an October 2016 speech at the University of Winnipeg's EckHardt-Grammattee Hall. In this one hour presentation, to an audience of about 100 people, Canada's longest serving Privy Councillor and former Minister of Defence discusses the need for monetary reform which woud allow for the financing of important and needed infrastructure projects, and transition away from fossil fuels as well as building capacity for coveted social programs like health care and education. He also explains that the Free Trade pact being negotiated between Canada and the European Union would jeopardise forever the ability of Canada to utilise those monetary tools. Mr. Helllyer gave a series of these talks around the time that Canada was set to officially sign the pact known as CETA in Brussells.
Paul Hellyer is a political commentator, founder of the Canadian Action Party back in 1997, and a writer. He is the author of several books including Funny Money: A Common Sense ALternative to Mainline Economics, (1994), Goodbye Canada (2001), Light at the End of the Tunnel: A Survival Plan for the Human Species, (2010) and The Money Mafia: A World in Crisis (2014).

Out of the Woods - Show #381 - 7-29-17
July 20, 2017, 1:37 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length.
Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul
