Laura Fogg— "Travelling Blind"

Dec. 20, 2024, 5:28 a.m.
The ways different creatures, especially people use their senses has for a long time attracted my curiosity. I have wondered about the dreams of blind people or deaf people.  From time to time I’d see an attentive woman walk past my office with a young person who carried a white cane with a red tip. Laura Fogg is this woman, the author of “Travelling Blind: Life Lessons From Unlikely Teachers,” and our guest here in the studios of Radio Curious. Laura Fogg has worked as an Orientation and Mobility Instructor for the blind in Mendocino County since 1971. In doing so, she has pioneered the use of the white cane with blind students who are very young or who have multiple impairments, traveling from student to student through the rather special backroads between their homes. Laura Fogg visited Radio Curious on December 1st, 2008 and talked about some of the life lessons she has learned. The book Laura Fogg recommends is “My Year Of Meats” by Ruth Ozeki

WINGS #37-24 Mothering as Gift

Dec. 19, 2024, 9:47 p.m.
Genevieve Vaughan is a leading theorist in the Gift Economy movement. This is her presentation at the 2016 conference of the Mothering Institute for Research and Community Involvement in Toronto. Vaughan demonstrates that the act of mothering is unilateral gift-giving, and that an infant's experience of being mothered (whether by biological mother or other) builds both the physical brain and the template of what it is to be human. She further asserts that the entire exchange economy is parasitic on a more fundamental gift economy that continues unacknowledged in most societies today. The talk includes an excerpt from a video of Dr. Allan Schore, member clinical faculty, Dept. of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences and UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.

Israel, Türkiye, & US congratulate themselves on removing Assad

Dec. 18, 2024, 9:06 p.m.
Clearly NATO is on the move, perhaps in anticipation of a war of heavyweights. Russia has stated that there must be a legal and democratic procedure where the people of Syria have the final say (the Astana Process) which could soon become a sticking point when the issue of recognition of a new government is raised. External forces applied killing sanctions and thousands of mercenaries to wear down and eliminate the Syrian Republic. Imperialists have reach but it is doubtful they have grasp. The Syrian people will not be ruled for long by outsiders.

Matt Simon: Long-Duration Energy Storage

Dec. 17, 2024, 11:22 p.m.
When we think about the transition to renewable energy sources, many of us imagine rooftop solar panels and wind turbine-dotted hills. But it’s not just about capturing energy, it’s also about keeping it. This week on Sea Change Radio we speak with Matt Simon, a Grist senior staff writer, to discuss long-duration energy storage. The transition to renewables for utilities is still very much evolving — efficiency, intermittency, and storage are among the issues scientists have yet to perfect. Simon shares some ideas for how we can build upon existing technologies to store solar and wind power, with longer capacity than lithium-ion batteries, ranging from reservoirs and caverns to our existing fleet of electric vehicles.
