Out of the Woods - Show #369 - 5-5-17

April 27, 2017, 6:57 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Jeff Blankfort:News/Ops: Palestinian Hunger Starike, Israeli Sadism

April 26, 2017, 11:51 a.m.
Blankfort begins by summarizing the French election, concluding that the combined votes of the other parties will defeat Marine Le Pen. He then cites Kurdish press which claims the bombs in Idlib did not release sarin but chlorine which went unreported in the US and questions why Trump had the Mother of All Bombs dropped on ISIS and not the Taliban. Following that with background on the bomb and its first intended target, Saddam Hussein. He then turns towards Korea where both Trump and Pence have been behaving like clowns, noting Trump’s announced “armada” was heading away from Korea, not towards it when he made his announcement and Pence’s hard stare northward at the DMZ to show the North Koreans America’s resolve.’ He then switches to the Palestinian prisoners hunger strike, quoting from Marwan Barghouti’s op-ed in the NY Times explaining it, followed by a report in Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish press, praising an ultra-right, ultra-racist group of Israeli Jews that decided to have a public barbecue outside of Ofer prison where many Palestinians are interred with the intent to use the odor of the delicious food to taunt the Palestinians whom the author declared are demanding that the prison becomes a 5-star hotel. Blankfort than gives some background on the newspaper, noting that it celebrated the 1994 massacre of 29 Palestinians and the wounding of 125 more while they were praying at the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, He goes from there to report on letters being sent to the new UN secretary general signed by 90 senators and over 300 members of Congress telling the UN to treat Israel more fairly, followed by a report that two ass-kissing Republican congressmen will be launching a Congressional Israel Victory Caucus tomorrow sponsored by Daniel Pipes’ Middle East Forum. He then cites a Times of Israel report that former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, publicly admitted that last November, ISIS in Syria apologized to Israel after firing on Israeli troops in the Golan Heights. Blankfort points out that this is consistent with Israeli policy of treating any fighter, from any group that has been wounded in fighting against the Syrian government. He concludes with a report on the FOIA suit by Grant Smith of IRMEP’s attempt to get the CIA to disclose how much it spent on assisting Israel in intelligence gathering between 1990 and 2015.

Pedro Lange-Churion: Venezuela's Collapse Explained

April 26, 2017, 11:42 a.m.
Pedro Lange-Churion examines the background of Hugo Chavez’s Bolivarian Revolution and the mistakes it made that created the current crisis, most notably Hugo Chavez’ belief that oil prices would keep rising and nationalizing industries that produced critical goods that Venezuela must now import. The previous US effort to overthrow him through a coup in 2002 that eventually ended in failure left Chavez more paranoid yet more powerful than ever. Maduro’s moves to suppress opposition, by packing the supreme court to get it to rule against new elections, then attempting to dissolve the legislature only overturned by protests in the streets, by jailing opponents and indefinitely postponing elections has made Maduro effectively a dictator of a country that given the other world crises of the moment is only in the news because of its violence. Lange-Churion responds to the threat by Venezuela to leave the OAS by suggesting it might not be a bad thing since being excluded never troubled Cuba which at the time was supported by the USSR. Cuba, he points out, is still receiving oil on a daily basis from Venezuela, as is its main customer, the US while the country is forced to import gas along with everything else. He points out that depletion of foreign currency reserves, now dpwn to $10.5 billion, is not sustainable but in the end he says Venezuelans must not give up hope.

Israel-Palestine Through the Lens of Settler Colonialism (TWO of TWO)

April 25, 2017, 4:50 p.m.
Here is the Question and Answer section following a talk by Israeli historian Ilan Pappe (in last week's radio program). In his presentation at the Press Club in Washington DC on March 24, 2017, he had challenged the audience with his conclusion that peace between Israelis and Palestinians can no longer be achieved by the so-called two state solution. Instead, Pappe said the only resolution comes with one democratic state for Palestinians and Israelis with equal rights for both. And this radio program presents some of Ilan Pappe's thoughts how this may become a reality. And for those who do not want to see Palestinian rights discussed TUC offers - again - a disclaimer: "The views and opinions expressed in the following program are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of this radio station, its staff or board of directors .." Ilan Pappe has better standing than many other historians because he was born in Haifa and educated in Israel. He was a senior lecturer in political science at the University of Haifa (1984–2007) His critique of the guiding ideas that went into the founding of Israel in 1948 is based on painstaking - and often painful research. He is now professor of history with the College of Social sciences and International Studies at Exeter in the United Kingdom.
Since 2014 the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs and the Institute for Research: Middle Eastern Policy, have held annual conferences on The Israel Lobby and American Policy. Along with Prof. John Mearsheimer, co-author of The Israel Lobby, Professor Ilan Pappe was the 2017 keynote speaker. Disclaimer at 1 min. 57 sec.
