We Have Met the Enemy of World Peace & it is US: Whose Weapons of Mass Destruction Have Been Used & Threaten the Safety and Peace of the World? with Prof. Christine Hong, The Korea Policy Institute, an independent research and educational institute that provides timely analysis of U.S. policies toward Korea and developments on the Korean peninsula. Trump left the world waiting to exhale as he used gun boat diplomacy with North Korea. He threatened war with North Korea and then left to luxuriate at his Mar-a-Lago resort while the rest of us were left in a state of high anxiety. Trump left for the weekend relaxing in Palm Beach amid reports that the U.S. could be preparing a pre-emptive strike in East Asia in anticipation of North Korea conducting a nuclear test or missile launch. The United States, claimed then it had sent an aircraft carrier strike group to the Korean Peninsula region, and Trump had repeatedly tweeted that if China will not use its leverage to rein in North Korea, the United States would act. Meanwhile, while accusing North Korea of belligerent behavior the U.S. military has been conducting large-scale military exercises with South Korean forces in previous weeks. These drills are obviously provocative to the North, pushing the Korean Peninsula, the world's biggest hotspot, to the brink of war with its naval strike group presumably looming on the horizon. Trump has created a dangerous situation in which a thermo-nuclear war could break out on the peninsula and pose a threat to the worlds peace and security. "Never Can I Write of Damascus"

Author talk at the Evanston Public Library with introduction by Russell Johnson. The authors recount how they ended up in Damascus, Syria preparing Iraqi refugee students for a free liberal arts education in the United States. With little more than Gabe's social security income, a desire to make reparation for what the United Stated had done to Iraq, and Theresa's unbounded optimism and creative energy, they convinced 60 universities in the United States to offer tuition wavers and scholarships to the students who found their way to their shoestring project. They talk about how they prepared the students to succeed in the US educational culture, the many embassy workers and various visiting scholars who volunteered as teachers and of the community support groups that were organized for each of the students once in the US and far from home. They also speak of why they first traveled to Iraq, following the first Gulf War, and how in defiance of the State Departments ban, they carried candy, toys and medicine to Iraq. The program starts with Theresa's song "Going to Iraq". The Iraqi Student Project saw almost all of it's 60 students graduate, with many going on to graduate school in the US and some returning to Iraq to work as teachers. Gabe and Theresa are now helping Syrian refugee students via their former Arabic teacher who found refuge in Istanbul, to get scholarships to universities in Canada after Trump banned Syrians from traveling to the US.
