Prof. Jim White - How to respond to climate change deniers (ONE of TWO)

March 7, 2017, 9:55 p.m.
When the Weather and Climate Summit was established in 1985 the goal was to bring together weather-casters and meteorologists from the U.S. and Canada with scientists and researchers. Their annual summit of 2017 was held in Breckenridge, Colorado, from January 8 to 12. One of the many topics at the summit was to prepare for the incoming Trump administration that was to include outspoken climate change deniers. Dr. Jim White teaches at the University of Colorado. He specializes in Global change, paleoclimate dynamics, and the human impact on climate. In a very entertaining and easy to understand way he addressed the five topics climate change deniers most often bring up: 2. How can we insignificant humans change the climate? 3. How can something like CO2 that is in such low concentrations have such an impact – and by the way isn’t CO2 good for plants. 4. We have seen about 1 degree of warming – why worry about such a small change. 5. I heard there was no warming recently for several years – does that prove climate change is not happening. Dr. Jim White begins with the question 1. Are we going to make the world uninhabitable for humans and other species

Wagner, Sally Roesch: Matilda Joslyn Gage, the Forgotten Suffragist (Archive)

March 7, 2017, 8:50 p.m.
This program is about Matilda Joslyn Gage, who lived from 1826 to 1892 and was a vibrant and leading figure in the suffragist movement of that century. Matilda Joslyn Gage, an outspoken leader for women’s rights, and an advocate to abolish slavery and religious bigotry, became historically invisible in pursuit of her liberty to think and speak as she thought proper. She was threatened with jail for voting in New York in 1871, and later was inducted into the Iroquois nation after publicly declaring Christian theology to be a primary source of the oppression of women. Historian and Chautauqua scholar Sally Roesch Wagner portrays Matilda Joslyn Gage, and did so in her 1996 interview with Radio Curious.

Lead-Headed Hunting Laws

March 7, 2017, 10:47 a.m.
On his first day on the job, newly appointed Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke, rode to work on a horse. This was obviously a rugged, outdoor enthusiast - someone who must care about the environment, right? Well, that same day, one of Secretary Zinke's first acts in office was to repeal the ban on lead ammunition in national parks, tribal lands and national wildlife refuge areas -- an order that the Obama Administration had signed near the end of 2016. This week on Sea Change Radio, we revisit our 2015 discussion with Kelly Sorenson, executive director of the Ventana Wildlife Society, one of the organizations that was at the forefront of the struggle to ban lead in order to bring the California Condor back from the brink of extinction. He explains the dangers of using lead ammunition, the tactics employed by the gun lobby to fight regulation, and how his group helped to advance protective legislation in California. Zinke's rash decision seems like a good opportunity for us all to review what we know about this damaging neurotoxin and how it moves through the food chain and ecosystem.
