Alice Rothchild, MD, and her newest book, 'Condition Critical'
July 4, 2017, 9:45 a.m.
Today we feature our very own Alice Rothchild, MD, speaking in New York City about her most recent book, "Condition Critical: Life and Death in Israel/Palestine." She describes the book as "a curated collection of blog essays and analysis."
Alice is an obstetrician-gynecologist who has worked in the health care reform and womenâs movements for many years, as well as Palestine justice activism. She is also a prolific blogger and a riveting speaker. Her previous books include "Broken Promises, Broken Dreams: Stories of Jewish and Palestinian Trauma and Resilience" and "On the Brink: Israel and Palestine on the Eve of the 2014 Gaza Invasion." Read more at her website, alicerothchild.com.
Since 1997, Alice has focused much of her energy on understanding the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Brought up in a religious Jewish family, Alice was freed from the Zionist myths she was brought up with by her zest for truth, justice, inquiry, and compassion for the human condition. She is now spending full time documenting her frequent travels to Palestine/Israel and elevating the Palestinian narrative through her books, films, lectures, and blogs.
In occupied Palestine, everyone who moves encounters multiple military checkpoints staffed with crazed, sadistic Israeli soldiers brandishing loaded guns. The soldiers engage in relentless searches, verbal abuse, and threats of instant execution. Jews seeking justice for Palestinians are especially despised, and so receive special abuse at checkpoints. Alice begins her talk by describing her treatment at one of them.
Episode 2017.11 - July 4th, Changing the Future By Exposing Its Past
July 4, 2017, 3:52 a.m.
Society, Western Civilization, thrives on its myths, confronting those Myths to help found a new Future is the aim of this Podcast. Know the truths here are 6 years in the making, much thought, much consideration was given to their authenticity, nonetheless they are stinging and could bring me to tears. The future is bleak my friends, the future, created from the mistakes made in the past, promises darkness if nothing is adjusted. Chris Hedges admits this truth, this is why I included the opening to his latest speech as my introduction, yet hope is still not lost. The future is no more certain then Trumpâs Twitter storm calendar, changes can be made, the past is prophetic but the present is mendable. I hope your minds are flexible enough to grasp the importance of this time. In a mere two years weâll mark 400 years since the first African arrived on these shores as a slave, this tells us something about the coming two or three decades; let us prevent this past from dominating the future.
Canada's Government Does Not Represent Superior Values
July 3, 2017, 6:26 p.m.
Trump's fairy tale about Syrians prepping a gas attack gets traction, but the same corporate media that boosts it refuses to showcase Seymour Hersh's counterclaims.
Stephen Gowans asks: Why do the powers-that-be get to accuse Syria of things without evidence? Why are we supposed to be so scared of chemical weapons? Meanwhile, Trump drops the "Mother of All Bombs" in Afghanistan.
As Canadians celebrate "Canada Day," Gowans evaluates the behaviour of the sanctimonious Canadian state.
Canada, which lectures North Korea about "human rights," never criticizes the medieval despotisms that it sells billions of dollars worth of arms to.
If there's money to be made, Canada will overlook 'peace, human rights, and democracy.' Our celebrated heads-of-state include raving anti-Semite Mackenzie King, who admired Hitler.

#487 -- Jean Shepherd vs Creeping Meatballism (R)
July 3, 2017, 9:09 a.m.
A look at radio great Jean Shepherd's humorous critiques (from the 1950s) of Americans' phoniness, consumerism, and false sense of "progress."
KD reads Shepherd's essay, "The Night People vs. 'Creeping Meatballism.'" Then (on the same theme) we hear parts of one of Shep's radio shows. He talks about credit cards, Green Stamps, a used atom-smasher for sale, "progress," how many ice cream flavors Howard Johnson's restaurants ACTUALLY have*, and the brief but glorious crime wave of Ronald Medsker.

Nev Hyman: Shelter From The Storm (re-broadcast)
July 1, 2017, 10:35 p.m.
Many people living in Pacific nations, like Vanuatu, Indonesia, and the Philippines, struggle to find adequate shelter, a challenge compounded by the elevated risk of structure-destroying cyclones. Meanwhile, miles off their coasts, plastic waste floats in the ocean, contaminating the marine food chain and threatening the worldâs largest ecosystem. Our guest this week is Nev Hyman, an avid surfer who saw these two seemingly unrelated problems and devised a solution. His company, Nev House, uses recycled plastic to build low-cost, fire- and cyclone-resistant, solar- and water sanitation-equipped houses for people living in developing nations. He tells us about how Nev House partners with charities to actualize their business model, how he feels the emergency shelter system should be streamlined, and how this small company will upcycle 3 million tons of plastic waste over the next four years.
