Stephen Zarlenga: The American Monetary Act (ONE of TWO)

May 16, 2017, 4:37 p.m.
This program was first produced in May 2009 - then and now it is a celebration of the work of an extraordinary man, Stephen Zarlenga, author of the book The Lost Science of Money and founder of the American Monetary Institute. Stephen Zarlenga died on April 25, 2017. In 2009 the consequences of the financial crisis of 2007/08 with mortgage fraud and predatory lending had become obvious, both in the misery they caused to ordinary people and in the scale of the financial bailout that the banks and the bankers received. Many called for better regulation - but a few visionaries asked for fundamental change of the monetary system. Zarlenga was a leading voice among them. Working with Congressman Dennis Kucinich, Zarlenga helped develop legislative language for a major reform of the Federal Reserve system. That included plans to remove the privilege of banks to create money and transfer that power to democratically controllable institutions. Dennis Kucinich and John Conyers introduced HR 2990, the N.E.E.D. Act of 2011, that stands for National Emergency Employment Defense. The proposed legislation was not acted upon. However HR 2990 is available to be re-introduced by anyone in Congress at any time.

Eritrea Has Grown Stronger in Resistance to America and Ethiopia

May 16, 2017, 4:06 p.m.
The US has followed a long term plan to force independent Eritrea back under the control of Ethiopia, but the Eritrean leadership has proved far more able and resilient than the colonizer’s mind could comprehend. In our interview the writers Amare and Habte provide the historical background and a candid picture of today’s Eritrea, explaining the success of an allegedly “isolated” country.

Measure For Measure: Aclima's Davida Herzl

May 16, 2017, 12:05 p.m.
Galileo said we should, “Measure what is measurable, and make measurable what is not so.” This week on Sea Change Radio, we take a look at two ways that people are trying to apply that wisdom to climate change. First, we speak to Davida Herzl, the CEO and co-founder of Aclima, a San Francisco-based company that refers to itself as a “FitBit for the planet.” Herzl explains how Aclima’s technology works, how the company makes money, and the opportunities that lie ahead as the industry of measuring air pollution evolves. Then, we dig into the Sea Change Radio archives and re-visit our discussion with James Leaton, the research director of Carbon Tracker, a British nonprofit that analyzes the risks of fossil fuel investment and presents findings to the financial sector, with the objective of limiting future greenhouse gas emissions.

#480 -- Capitalism vs. Democracy, Prosperity, Ecology

May 14, 2017, 7:09 p.m.
Nuclear weapons and climate change pose existential threats to life on earth, says Noam Chomsky. Democratic institutions would be able and inclined to deal with these threats, But since the 1970s, capitalism has succeeded in undermining democracy and democratic institutions, in Europe and the U,S, Thus we have a "perfect storm" of crises. By undermining democracy, capitalists have also greatly increased their own wealth and reduced the prosperity of the 99%. (Continued under "Credits"... )

Episode 2017.10 - Trump Tight, The First Amendment, The Future and Victory Without Sacrifice

May 14, 2017, 3:20 a.m.
I’m Back! Venezuela, a war maybe on deck with this Socialist boogeyman, plus did you know the Chinese, along with a few other wealthy countries are buying up your country, neither did I (accept all those times when I did). This is a jam packed episode, I spend some time speaking about the threat Millennials pose to the Elite – all Communists in waiting! I talk about the changes coming to the podcast and what the future may hold for our fragile republic. Imagine a world where the Capitalist order takes on the duty of transforming the country into a very compassionate commonwealth, can you see it – the Capitalist system had the opportunity to do just that after World War II, it didn’t, it went after those societal elements seeking to bring compassion to the economy through Democracy, Socialism and Labor unions. History cannot be rewritten, thus I conclude the system is incapable of bring Commonwealth principals to those living underneath its edicts, what then does this portend for the future – you don’t really want to rest your eyes on those dreary prospects, neither do I, so I (sort of) don’t. Can this country ever be fixed or rescued, I’m an optimist, so I believe it can (though the realist in me says “Not a chance”). Thanks for listening!
