Out of the Woods - Show #365 - 4-8-17

March 30, 2017, 9:15 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Donald Trump's Russian Connection

March 28, 2017, 8:28 p.m.

Our guest, Andrew Kramer (https://www.nytimes.com/by/andrew-e-kramer), has been reporting from Moscow for the New York Times since 2006.   In our conversation, we ask: who is Paul Manafort, where did he come from, and how did he became Trump’s campaign manager? What aspects of Manafort’s longtime relationships with Russian leaders and President Trump might be revealed in the pending hearings conducted by the House of Representatives' Intelligence Committee? In addition, we discuss the recent non-permitted demonstrations that occurred in Russia.

Feminist Theology and Women in the Muslim World (TWO of TWO) Archive

March 28, 2017, 1:23 p.m.
This is the conclusion of Dr. Riffat Hassan's extraordinary feminist lecture on the story of Adam and Eve, a story that forms the basis for the oppression of women in Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Plus my interview with her about her radical re-interpretation of the significance of Eve's acceptance of the apple. Dr. Riffat Hassan is a Muslim theologian from Pakistan who opposes the Islamic view of the inferiority of women. She says that since anti women legislation and custom are enacted in the name of theology, it is necessary to study the Koran and critique the source. In the original text, says Hassan, women are neither inferior nor sinful. Adam is not a man's name - it is the word for human. In fact in the Koran the original being created by god is feminine, a fact that is concealed in all translations. Riffat Hassan says the original meaning was altered by later writings, the so-called Hadiths. These are quotes attributed to the prophet Mohammed and passed on by people who say they heard him tell the story. And it is here - and only here, in the Hadiths that the story of creation of woman from Adam's rib is told six times. The Hadiths say that woman is secondary because she was made of Adam's rib and sinful since she is responsible for the expulsion from paradise. Riffat Hassan was Professor of Religious Studies and Humanities at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. She received her PhD from Durham University, UK, in 1968 and has taught in many institutions, including Oklahoma State University and Harvard Divinity School. Riffat Hassan has since retired after 33 years of teaching in the US. She gave courses not only in theology but also in literary criticism, Shakespeare, Romantic Poets, international relations and foreign policy. However through all her academic accomplishments and to this day she was and is a human rights activist on behalf of women.

Free Victoire Ingabire, End Kagame's Dictatorship.

March 28, 2017, 12:27 p.m.
Once again, Rwandans and their international supporters have gathered in Brussels to call for the release of political prisoner, Victoire Ingabire, imprisoned in Rwanda for daring to stand for office and for challenging the RPF version of the 1994 war and massacres in that country. President Kagame (former Ugandan General) has powerful backing from Washington, and uses it to murder and oppress people with impunity.
