Frida Berrigan - It Runs in the Family

Oct. 3, 2016, 1:15 p.m.
From ArtRage Gallery: As part of our speaker series during our Americans Who Tell The Truth exhibition, Frida Berrigan, daughter of Philip Berrigan, speaks at ArtRage about her dad and new book, "It Runs in the Family: On Being Raised by Radicals and Growing into Rebellious Motherhood." The book illustrates how parents can create lasting and meaningful bulwarks between their kids and the violence endemic in our culture by considering how to raise thoughtful, compassionate, fearless young people committed to social and political change without scaring, hectoring or scarring them with all the wrongs in the world. Her parents, Phil Berrigan and Elizabeth McAlister, were a former priest and nun who became nationwide icons for their prophetic witness against war and nuclear weapons, which sometimes resulted in long jail sentences. Frida grew up in the community they helped found, Jonah House in Baltimore, and becoming a parent herself has forced her to come to terms with her own upbringing in new ways. She offers a unique perspective on parenting that derives from hard work, deep reflection, and lots of trial and error.

Updates on the Prison Strike, ATL Antifa on Hammerfest, and words on the NAABC conference

Oct. 2, 2016, 1:45 p.m.
I wanted to do some announcements regarding the prison strike, but honestly so many amazing things have been going on it would be impossible to do them justice in the time we have for this segment. In brief, at Holman Prison in Atmore Alabama, where many rebels are part of the Free Alabama Movement, it was reported a few days ago that most if not all of the prison guards there had quit their jobs, either giving their notice or walking off entirely, in solidarity with the strikers. This is a huge piece of news, and I am not aware of it ever having happened before on such a large scale. It was also announced the other day that prisoners in the strike and refused to let guards lock them up and refused to go to their jobs. This is also a tremendous piece of news, it is clear that the prison strike is still going strong though it should come as no surprise that it is being quelled in mass media, which have even reported that it has fizzled out. The opposite is true. Keep your eyes on It's Going Down, Support Prisoner Resistance, Mask Magazine, and the Portland Anarchist Black Cross among other anarchist news sources for more real updates. You can also help by writing to those who have been targeted in this strike, you can find a list of prison rebels on the IWOC page. in this episode we are presenting two segments, firstly is a conversation recorded with Keith from ATL Antifa about the fast approaching occurrence of Hammerfest, which is a far right music festival, which is suspected to be taking place in Drake Town, Georgia about an hour outside of Atlanta. In this interview, we speak about how ATL Antifa got started, whether or not Trump's presence on the political stage has emboldened far right / white supremacist activity, some vague tactical advice for dealing with suspected far right activity, police ties with the KKK, some history about and advice about dealing with Hammerskins, some other struggles that are going on in Atlanta and the surrounding towns and much more. To get in touch with them, visit https://afainatl.wordpress.com/ or you can get super current updates on their twitter @afainatl The second segment is a short interview with a member of the organizing committee for the upcoming Anarchist Black Cross conference. In this conversation we talk about the history of the ABC, how the prison strike is informing this years conference and much more.

Defend Free Speech, defend Palestinian rights, reinstate Nadia Shoufani

Oct. 1, 2016, 1:14 p.m.
There is an atmosphere of intimidation and tension around those who speak up about Israel’s illegal occupation of the West Bank, the blockade of Gaza, and the equal protection of Palestinian rights under international law. Ted Schmidt who has done all these things, plus be the first teacher in the the Catholic schools of Canada to establish holocaust studies, has followed his conscience and the Sermon on the Mount. He provides a clear analysis of the issues in the case of the suspended teacher, Nadia Shoufani, and urges us all to fight for the reinstatement of the courageous and valued educator.

Prisoners Strike, Say No To Slave Labor

Oct. 1, 2016, 8:51 a.m.
Prisoners, Say No To Being Used As Slave Labor and Withhold Their Labor Power In Nationwide Strike with Cole Dorsey and Michael Forest, Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee Industrial Workers of the World Prisons can t run without inmates, in more ways than one. Prisoners wash floors, work in the laundries and kitchens, and provide a large amount of the labor that keeps their facilities running. In return, they earn pennies per hour or even no pay at all. That s sparking what may have been the largest prison strike yet as inmates across the country stopped working on Sept. 9. The strikers are calling for an end to forced labor and what they call prison slavery . And, it s no coincidence that they picked Sept. 9 as the strike date: It was the 45th anniversary of the Attica rebellion, when prisoners at the Attica Correctional Facility in New York demanded their rights in one of the most significant civil rights occurrences of the century. "I'M BEGINNING TO BELIEVE THAT `U.S.A.' STANDS FOR THE UNDERPRIVILEGED SLAVES OF AMERICA" wrote a 20th-century prisoner from Mississippi in a letter detailing the daily violence he witnessed behind prison walls. His statement resounds with a long tradition of prisoners, particularly African-American prisoners, who have used the language and narrative of slavery to describe the conditions of their imprisonment. In the year 2000, as the punishment industry becomes a leading employer and producer for the U.S. "state," and as private prison and "security" corporations bargain to control the profits of this traffic in human degradation, the analogies between slavery and prison abound.

Brinksmanship Over Syria: On a War Footing with Russia

Sept. 30, 2016, 10:03 p.m.
The U.S. is accused of deliberately attacking and killing Syrian Army units protecting Deir ez-Zor from ISIS/Daech fighters. Shortly afterward, Russian and Syrian forces are accused of targeting a humanitarian aid convoy in the Aleppo countryside. Will the accusations and counter-accusations lead to war between Russia and the U.S.? The Global Research News Hour focuses this week on the major powers showdown emerging around Syria. The show starts with a repeat of a recent show from Victoria based radio station CFUV, in which host Chris Cook of Gorilla-Radio speaks with Rick Sterling of the Syria Solidarity Movement about how a supposedly humanitarian group known as the White Helmets is furthering the U.S. imperial agenda. Later we hear from Canadian writer, and former High School teacher Mark Taliano about what he observed on the ground duiring his recent trip to Syria. Finally, Chicago-based broadcaster and writer Stephen Lendman joins us to talk about the propaganda campaign pushing the populace toward a nuclear conflagration.
